Chapter 5 - Tate's New Friend

The following day, after Katelen and Travis had finished their breakfast, Travis received a phone call from his ex-partner's neighbor. The neighbor reported, "Travis, I found Tate wandering outside alone. When I took him back to his house, his mother was upstairs engaged in sexual activities. Tate was hungry, so I brought him to my home and fed him." Alarmed, Travis hurried to the neighbor's house, where law enforcement officers were already taking the neighbor's statement. The authorities assisted Travis in collecting Tate's belongings and granted him temporary custody of Tate until a court date could be arranged. Upon learning of the situation, Katelen realized that Travis would need to find a larger living space than his current one-bedroom apartment. She offered, "Well, you and Tate can move in with me." With the help of Katelen's brothers, Travis moved his things into Katelen's residence. Katelen was pleased to have additional occupants in the house and hoped that Tate would not react adversely to any unusual occurrences. Sensing Travis's anger towards his ex-partner, Katelen provided comfort and support. Travis set up his twin bed in the room where Tate would be sleeping. That evening, Katelen prepared a dinner of chicken tenders and macaroni and cheese, acknowledging that she would now need to make more child-friendly meals. Tate assisted Katelen in feeding Beau and Grizz. Later, Travis tucked Tate into bed, with Beau and Grizz sleeping by Tate's side. As Travis lay down next to Katelen, he expressed his frustration, "I can't believe my irresponsible ex was willing to endanger my son while she engaged in sexual activities." Katelen squeezed his hand, responding, "Some people prioritize themselves above their children. My father did the same; he didn't consider how his affair would impact my siblings and me." In a moment of levity, Travis traced his fingers over Katelen's tattoos and remarked, "Have I ever told you how attractive I find your breast tattoos?" Katelen replied, "Thank you. Some people find it unsettling that I have a fascination with Ted Bundy and have his name and face tattooed on my breasts, despite him being a serial killer." They shared a kiss and soon drifted off to sleep, leaving the door slightly ajar in case Tate needed them during the night.

It had now been a week since Travis and Tate had moved in with Katelen, and Tate particularly enjoyed spending time outdoors, running around with Beau, Grizz, and Jeffrey's soon-to-be stepson, Jason. On a Wednesday, Travis attended a private meeting with the judge in order to secure full custody of Tate and to arrange for his ex to pay child support. Meanwhile, Katelen had just concluded recording an episode of her podcast when she overheard Tate conversing with someone in his room. Curious, she approached and inquired, "Who are you talking to, Tate?" Tate responded, "I'm talking to Ted." Intrigued, Katelen asked, "Is Ted your imaginary friend?" To her surprise, Tate replied, "He's not imaginary, but yes, he's my friend. His last name is Bundy." Katelen was momentarily taken aback by this revelation. She then asked Tate to describe Ted, and his description matched Ted Bundy's appearance precisely. Considering that Tate had never been in her room to see the pictures of Ted Bundy on her wall and knowing that she always kept her Ted Bundy tattoos covered around him, Katelen was perplexed. Additionally, she was certain that Travis would never allow Tate to watch any content related to Ted Bundy. Tate further affirmed his acquaintance by saying, "Ted says he was your first crush." Katelen responded, "Well, as long as he doesn't frighten you, he can stay." As Katelen walked to the bathroom, she had an intuition to take a pregnancy test. To her astonishment, the test result was positive. She was certain Travis was the father, as he was the only man she had been intimate with since breaking up with her previous boyfriend. Katelen called Tate downstairs and prepared some chicken nuggets and French fries for lunch, accompanied by apple juice. She also fed Beau and Grizz some dry dog food mixed with canned carrots. When Travis arrived home while Katelen and Tate were still eating, he embraced Tate, who then asked, "Am I going back to Mom's?" Travis reassured him, "No, son, you're staying here forever." Tate beamed with happiness and commented, "Good, I never liked living with Mom." After finishing his meal, Tate went to his toy chest in the living room and began playing with his toys, with Beau and Grizz lying beside him. Katelen then asked Travis, "So, is your ex going to pay child support?" Travis confirmed, "Yes, $12,000 a month until he's 18." Katelen smiled and said, "I have something to tell you." When Travis looked at her, Katelen revealed, "I'm pregnant." Travis, surprised, asked, "From that night a week ago?" Katelen responded, "Yes." Travis expressed his excitement, and they shared a kiss. Katelen then recounted the incident with Tate earlier in the day, explaining how Tate had described Ted Bundy accurately without ever having seen the pictures or tattoos, and that he mentioned that Ted Bundy was her first crush. Moreover, she assured that Ted Bundy didn't scare Tate. Travis was taken aback but calmly replied, "Oh, yes, he's definitely never seen anything about Ted Bundy. Well, as long as Ted Bundy doesn't scare Tate, I don't have a problem with it." Later that night, after dinner, Travis tucked Tate into bed. Before leaving the room, Tate mentioned, "Ted Bundy said he'll watch me through the night." Travis responded, "Well, tell him I said thank you." Beau and Grizz slept on the floor next to Tate's bed. Travis then lay beside Katelen, gently rubbed her stomach, and remarked, "I can't believe my offspring is in your belly." Katelen replied, "I'm happy it's yours," and they shared a kiss before drifting off to sleep.
