Chapter 3 -  A Calculated Move

Days passed in quiet isolation after Jun Qiguang's initial encounter with Yao Huaijin. The Sword Sage did not visit him again, leaving Jun Qiguang under the care of a young disciple who brought him meals, medicine, and whatever else he might need. The disciple was polite but distant, never offering more than a few words before leaving. This suited Jun Qiguang just fine. He preferred the solitude, as it gave him time to think and plan.

Hefenghu Peak was rich with spiritual energy, its density unlike anything Jun Qiguang had felt before. Even as he recovered, he could sense the power around him, seeping into his bones, revitalizing his spirit. Cultivating in such an environment would allow him to regain his former strength quickly—a tempting prospect for a former demon lord who had lost everything. But he knew better than to reveal his ambitions. For now, he needed to play the part of the grateful survivor, biding his time.

One morning, as Jun Qiguang was meditating in his room, he was interrupted by the arrival of the sect leader of Tianyongheng, Yao Huaijin's elder brother. The man entered the room with an air of authority, his eyes briefly scanning Jun Qiguang before he extended his hand.

"Let me check your pulse," the sect leader said, his tone firm yet not unkind.

Jun Qiguang hesitated for only a moment before offering his hand. The sect leader's fingers were cool against his skin as he measured the boy's energy.

After a moment, the sect leader released Jun Qiguang's hand, his expression thoughtful. "Your foundation is strong," he murmured, more to himself than to Jun Qiguang. His eyes flickered with a hint of interest before he turned to leave, his robes sweeping the floor behind him.

As Hua Junwei approached Yao Huaijin's residence, his tall and composed figure was instantly recognizable. Dressed in deep blue robes, his silver-streaked hair was neatly tied back, a reflection of both his wisdom and the passage of time. His sharp features, softened by a kind and penetrating gaze, carried a natural authority that demanded respect without intimidation. Known for his fairness and decisiveness, Hua Junwei had a reputation for being a leader who balanced strength with humility—a trait that had earned him the unwavering loyalty of the Tianyongheng Sect.

Not long after, Hua Junwei arrived at Yao Huaijin's residence. Yao Huaijin's abode was as sparse and solitary as the man himself, tucked away from the rest of the sect. The air inside was cool, the atmosphere one of tranquillity and isolation.

Hua Junwei found Yao Huaijin seated near a low table, his attention focused on a scroll before him. Without looking up, Yao Huaijin acknowledged his presence with a subtle nod.

Hua Junwei wasted no time. "I heard about the child you brought back," he said, his tone carrying a mix of curiosity and concern. "I've just checked his pulse—his foundation is stronger than expected for someone in his condition. There's something unusual about him."

Yao Huaijin remained silent, his gaze still fixed on the scroll. Hua Junwei took a seat across from him, studying his impassive expression.

"You've always preferred your solitude, Huaijin," the sect leader Hua Junwei continued, his voice softening. "But perhaps it's time for a change. The boy could make a good disciple. He could keep you company on Hefenghu Peak, and it would ease my mind to know that you're not entirely alone."

Yao Huaijin finally looked up, his eyes meeting his Hua Junwei's. There was no need for words to convey his thoughts—he had always valued his solitude, but his brother's suggestion carried a weight that he couldn't easily dismiss.

The sect leader saw the hesitation in Yao Huaijin's eyes and added, "It's only a suggestion. But consider it. The boy has potential, and it would be beneficial for both of you."

With that, Hua Junwei left Yao Huaijin to his thoughts, knowing better than to press the issue further.

Later that day, as Jun Qiguang wandered the grounds of Hefenghu Peak, he noticed Yao Huaijin by the lake, his white robes stark against the misty landscape. The serene waters of the lake reflected Yao Huaijin's silhouette, adding an ethereal quality to his already imposing presence.

Sensing an opportunity, Jun Qiguang approached him, his expression composed and respectful.

"Master Yao," Jun Qiguang said, his voice calm as he bowed slightly.

Yao Huaijin glanced at him, his face as unreadable as ever. "You should not exert yourself," he said, his tone cool.

"I'm recovering well, thanks to your kindness," Jun Qiguang replied smoothly. "I wanted to express my gratitude personally. You saved my life, and for that, I owe you a great debt."

Yao Huaijin said nothing, his gaze drifting back to the still waters of the lake. After a moment, he spoke in a tone that was both neutral and contemplative, "So, you want to repay me by becoming my disciple?"

Jun Qiguang's expression remained composed as he replied, "I have no family, no home. You gave me a second chance at life, and I would like to repay that debt by becoming your disciple. If you would allow me, I would serve you with all my heart."

Yao Huaijin remained silent, his eyes focused on the lake. It was unclear what thoughts passed through his mind, but his expression revealed nothing.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Yao Huaijin spoke. "Very well. I will take you as my disciple."

Jun Qiguang bowed deeply, concealing the triumph that surged within him. "Thank you, Master Yao. I will not disappoint you."

With a final nod, Yao Huaijin turned and walked away, leaving Jun Qiguang standing alone by the lake. The former demon lord straightened, a cold smile playing on his lips. The first step of his plan had succeeded. Now, under the guise of a humble disciple, he would cultivate in peace and grow stronger. One day, he would reclaim the power he had lost and make the world pay for its transgressions.

But for now, he would play the part of the devoted student, patiently waiting for his moment to strike.
