Chereads / Somehow, I Become His Mate / Chapter 12 - Why Me?

Chapter 12 - Why Me?

"What's this? I thought you had accepted that fact, but it seems like you are still high in the clouds."

I know she meant to say that to 'Hazel', not me. But I felt my breath lodged in my throat upon hearing for myself how Hazel's life had been in this place so far. My assumption about Alpha Sharx letting all this happen to her turned out to be correct. And perhaps, he even initiated it.

'And yet, they always appear like the happiest couple in the world in public.'

I hate these feelings because I keep empathising with Hazel.

I shook those thoughts away. Eventually, I need to take down Hazel so I can return to my body.

And seeing this maid blabbering proudly, it seems like I can extract more information from her.

"When I become the luna of this pack, you will be the first person I will crush."

"Pft. The Luna of this pack? You?" A mocking tone could clearly be heard coming from her subtly laughter.

Her reaction, which was like an open book, was enough to answer my curiosity.

In this mansion, Madam Pamela runs everything. She is the acting Luna of this pack, reluctant to transfer her power to Hazel. This is typical of a greedy mother-in-law who often appears on morning television dramas.

"Why? You think I can't do it?"

"What makes you think you can achieve that? You are just a hole to satisfy his lust. That's… your only role in this place."

"Damn it. I would love to take that role, you damn Hazel."

"What did you say?" She was flustered by my monologue.

"Anyway, are you sure Madam Pamela will be in that position forever? She's getting wrinkly, though."

She gritted her teeth. "Watch your mouth."

"Aha, do you think she will transfer that bit of power to you if you keep licking her feet?"

I have lived so far, insulting everyone who irritates me with my words. Among those people, she looks the easiest to deal with. And by that, I mean she's easy to provoke.

I see the edges of her eyes heat up.

"Madam Pamela will hear all this!"

I chuckle, and then replied. "Let her hear it, then. Ah, make sure she hears the next piece as well."

"What?" She raised her eyebrows.

Before she stormed to me, I threw a vase of flowers at her face.

It happened so fast like a flash of lightning, that she didn't have time to block the attack with her arms completely. The sound of the vase shattered and her shrill scream overlapped.

Even though blood droplets fall from her face, she looks like she doesn't know what just happened. No, it's more like she couldn't believe it.

"Are you crazy?!" She shouted. But I noticed there was a tremor in her voice.

I grimaced. "I am. Don't you know that?"

I raised a glass above my head, then posed like a pitcher about to throw the ball.

"Ho-hold on!" She plopped down on the floor with her face crumpled ugly. "I, I will spread it to everyone that you are crazy!"

"Be my guest."

As she started crawling, trying to get away, I grabbed her hair.

Thanks to my precise grab, a neatly tied hair bun had now become a loose mess. Her face turned pale when she saw a glass right in front of her face. Her eyes tremble as she glances at me behind the glass.

"Tada~ did you miss me?"

"Crazy b-tch. Let me go, now!"

"Oh my, where are you going? Ah, right! You'll go whimpering at Madam Pamela's feet. Alright, you can go, hush, hush,"

I grinned as I remove my hand from her hair.

"Ew, gross." Her strands of hair got caught between my fingers.

I wouldn't be surprised if her head had a bald spot after this.

She stood up, staggering like a drunkard towards the door.

'She's a loser. A top loser.'

It makes me wonder why Hazel didn't put a weak, loser woman like her in her place. If it was Hazel, she could fight a woman as weak as her.

Except, she deliberately got into this shit situation for certain reasons.

'Maybe for the same reason she put up with my bullying.'

I threw the glass still in my hand against the wall next to the door. The maid jolted up and screeched in a hoarse voice like a crow. She quickly opened the door and disappeared behind it.

I sighed in relief. "Finally, she's out."

With this, she might not come back for quite some time, right?

I shook my head as I looked at the mess I had created in this innocent room. Broken glass was scattered across the marble floor, which looked like stars sparkling under a lamp's light. I walked to the door to lock it.

"Ack, ugh," I looked down.

My feet were cut by broken glass. There were drops of blood on the floor where I had just passed. I had expected this to happen when walking around without wearing slippers.

"I can't believe my day started with such shit. There is a lot I need to do today, tho." I took a deep breath.

I want to search all areas within this room to find clues about Hazel's life in this mansion. It's impossible she didn't leave any clues here.

She's stupid, so it looks like there will be a lot of clues left in this place before I look for them elsewhere.

I looked at the soles of my feet. "Ha, what a bad omen."

If I remember correctly, I saw a first aid kit in the bathroom yesterday, so I walked there.

After taking the first aid kit, I sat in the area near the bathtub, trying to mend my cuts. It seemed like the wound wasn't that deep. At least my wound wasn't as bad as the one I gave that maid earlier on her face.

As I look down at my feet, a drop of water falls on my toenail. "Huh? What is that?"

I raised my head, accidentally meeting my eyes through the reflection in the mirror. My eyes were red and filled with tears. I choke on my breath.

"Oh my, when did I cry? Sheesh, why am I crying? This isn't a deep cut one worth crying over, Maya. What's wrong with you?" I wiped the tears that flooded my cheeks with the back of my hand.

"Really, what's wrong with me?"

I cannot suppress the sadness that shackles my heart, let alone suppress the sound of my sobs. Over the past two months, I've often cried when I drank. But this is the first time I've cried while sober.

I'm glad my tears didn't burst out when I faced that maid earlier. That would be so embarrassing.

I patted my chest. "It's alright. It's okay. I can handle everything. I've been through many dark times, so this one isn't much."

I took a deep breath, then exhaled slowly.

"Alpha Sharx is here. I could see him up close and even have a conversation with him. So, what makes you so sad? Everything will turn out fine, Maya. Trust yourself! I can do it!" I put up my fist in celebration.

That's what my mouth said, but my crying only got worse as I patted my chest and felt a great loss.

"My twin watermelon, hic. My sexy dynamite balloons, hic."

Clack.

I turned around when I heard that sound. Someone was trying to open the bathroom door that I had locked.

Clack-clack.

I washed my face with cold water. It brought me back to my senses and kept me alert, as I didn't have time to be sentimental.

'It stopped...' I tilted my head in front of the door and fixed my eyes on the doorknob, which didn't move. 'Did I saw wrong earlier?'

The cold wind blows at the back of my neck. It sends chills down to my fingertips. I always try to avoid horror movies, but my current situation forces me to go through with it.

When I thought I had heard wrong, a loud banging and the doorknob turned roughly surprised me. I think this is too much for a horror experience outside a cinema.

'Whoa, hahaha. I can't even rest.'

"What are you doing?! Open the door right now, or I'll break it!" The shrill voice of a middle-aged woman came from outside.

It came along with the sound of the door being banged again by many hands.

I stared at the door blankly, then took a deep breath while pinching the bridge of my nose. "What are these people trying to do so early in the morning? Why are they so extra?"

Bang! Bang! Bang! BWANG!

"Open it! Open it right now, you wench!"

"Oh no, Alpha Sharx will get mad at me if I let this door made of teak wood broken, tho."

One thing that relieved me was locking the door from the inside. I am glad my body remembers exactly how to adapt to this environment. Talk about muscle memories, huh?

"Shut up! I'll open it now!"

After I shouted, I couldn't hear any sound from outside for a while. I guess they're all shocked, huh? It would be nice if I could peek at their reaction.

I opened the door and saw someone familiar there.
