Chereads / Perfectly Scoundrels / Chapter 6 - Bad deal

Chapter 6 - Bad deal

A strange green wind began to blow near the two challengers, a smelly and rancid air that could be compared with the breath of a putrid mouth. Soon, the swamp water began to rise, and mud began to emerge. Something akin to an arm began to form. Underneath the mud, you saw the remnants of bones. It was another undead monster.

"Leave us alone!" Screamed the monster in a high-pitched voice, maybe the voice of a girl or a young kid, but it was filled with poison and hate.

Soon the belly of the monster began to get inflated, Raven instinct kicked in as she saw the monster getting bloated she jumped to the side and barely evaded a wave of sludge and rotten things vomited at her. You could hear the creature whimpering after using the attack, but clearly, no damage was done to it yet.

"Don't stay there standing like an idiot! Kill that thing!" Raven exclaimed getting up and running to the side of the monster.

She was feeling a little numb after the hit and action vs the skeletons, but she removed those thoughts from her mind, it was a do-or-die situation since for some reason they triggered a trap as soon as they stepped inside the cursed tower, and the voice proclaimed it was because of their combined luck stat. She jumped back to evade one massive swing of the creature and plunged forward to the water to not get crushed by another wave of sludge thrown at her.

Meanwhile, Ito was frozen in shock. His body hurt in multiple places where the zombies had hit him, especially a nasty impact he got in his face. He felt scammed, the first heroine he meet treated him like trash, tho he was okay with the tsundere type, but she started to become annoying, and also a single idea spread in his mind.

'This is no fun'

When he got transported to this world, he got promised adventures such as the ones he liked from his favorite animes and games, and he didn't get a holy sword or an insane amount of power, the frustration kicked in but fear paralyzed him. Why should he fight for that shitty girl? He deserved better. He is THE protagonist after all. When he thought the first event was over a boss suddenly appeared... yeah, this was no fun at all.

"Fuck this all!" He said and decided to run away.

Slam. Sludge. Slam. Slam. Raven was evading the attacks one after another, for some reason the creature was very focused on her, luckily for her, the attacks were slow enough to just not get hit... and after a couple of moments she figured that only dodging wouldn't get her anywhere, so after a successful evasion she advanced enough to place a hand in front of her.

"『Fire Butterfly Swarm』!"

From the palm of her hand, many tiny paper butterflies appeared and surrounded the creature, exploding in tinny burst of flame, it wasn't enough to take it down of course but gave her a time window to jump and stab the creature where the skull should be, tho, the attack wasn't strong enough to end the fight.

'The hell!?' She saw with the corner of her eye how the coward began to spring into the swamp, soon disappearing in the fog. She didn't have much time to consider the betrayal, because the creature hit her in the gut, in the same spot where the skeleton had connected some minutes ago, for a second there her consciousness slipped...

<<『Emergency Illusion』has been triggered evading a lethal hit!>>

And she fell back to the water once again. Her body was covered in mud and was all drenched, luckily for her, the illusion was distracting the enemy who was roaring in anger. How many times did she have to kick the bucket in a short period? Now even a loser left her to save his hide, it was foolish trying to trust a mongrel from another world, but she was like a cockroach, she was tenacious and wouldn't die a pitiful death if she had any say in the matter. So she sat down and smirked, she was back to square one as the undead destroyed the illusion crushing it under a mountain of mud. Once again the creature whimpered.

"Why are you even crying, you abomination" She said standing up "I bet that's the reason you ended up like a mountain of excrement in a place like this"

The vengeful monster roared in fury, lunging at her with renewed ferocity. She extended her hand, a defiant gesture that, from afar, might look like a heroic last stand. The monster, however, wasn't fooled. It knew she was nearly spent. But it wasn't going to take any chances. It curled up, bracing itself, expecting the familiar fire explosions to rip through the air.

But the explosions never came.

Cautiously, the creature uncovered itself, its instincts sharp but too slow. What it saw was not the fire it feared, but the cat girl hurtling through the air toward it, her face twisted in a wicked grin. A few seconds earlier, she had smiled, knowing her trap had worked. She couldn't cast her spell again for several precious moments, but she didn't need to. This was her opening.

With both hands gripping her dagger, she drove the blade through the mud and into the monster's skull, breaching bone with lethal precision.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

She fell to the ground covering her ears, the monster dying scream sounded like many voices merged in one, suffering voices receiving relief.

The mud began to fall apart from the monster and its bones began to disintegrate violently as it convulsed... she even could swear something like smoke where being released from its skull. Her breathing was violent and her whole body was in pain, especially her stomach, as she smiled she just curved into a ball and vomited. The battle was over.

...

...

...

It was disgusting, but the job wasn't done. She slowly got up and calmly walked to retrieve her dagger.

'Now I have to hunt a rat'

As she was about to leave, she saw a glow inside the mud...

It was a picture of the defeated monster and a small vial with a silver liquid inside, she heard the dungeon was a place people earned good amounts of money. Usually in the form of materials, but if you are lucky you have a chance to obtain greater rewards, like grimoires, items imbued with graces, or even monster cards, which were used to enchant equipment. This wasn't a total loss after all, but she would take care of it later.

"Where are you hiding you piece of trash?"

She just stopped on her tracks and turned back to the exit portal that had opened shortly after the boss was defeated.

'One day we will settle this score' She thought, another name was added to her list, she wasn't stupid enough to deal with another assault in her current status.
