I awoke to the sight of a dimly lit ceiling, the familiar rough fabric of a tent swaying above me. My body felt like it had been trampled by a herd of stampeding oxen, every muscle aching and stiff. I blinked, trying to clear the haze from my eyes, but my vision stayed blurry. Where was I? The air smelled of earth and sweat, faintly tinged with the scent of herbal salves.
Fragments of memory floated back to me in pieces. I remembered the stable, choosing the colt. His dark, wild eyes before he bucked me into the dirt. I had chased him. The fall into the pit. The snakes—Rakh'tamon, the snakes!
