Chapter 1 - Chapter: The Overseer's Playground

03 awoke with a jolt, a scream lodged in her throat as pain radiated through her skull. She was disoriented, her surroundings a blur of dim light and oppressive silence. The air was thick with the stench of metal and something else—something acrid, like burnt flesh. Her heart pounded against her ribs, her body wracked with an ache that felt unnatural, as though she had been asleep for an eternity.

The room she found herself in was a tomb of bleakness. The four weathered gray walls seemed to close in on her, and when she tried to move, a cold, unyielding metal collar around her neck cut into her flesh. Panic clawed at her insides as she strained to remember... anything. Her past, her name, her purpose—all gone, as though her mind had been scraped clean.

A searing pain in her arm tore her attention away from her spiraling thoughts. She stared in mute horror as numbers etched themselves into her skin, sizzling with the heat of a brand: 100003. The pain was excruciating, but what terrified her more was the sense of finality, as though she had been marked for something unimaginable, something inescapable.

Then, the room crackled to life, the oppressive silence shattered by a voice that dripped with sickly sweetness. "Wakey, wakey, my darling contestants!" The voice was a dissonant melody, cheerful yet laced with something darker—a delight in their suffering.

In a dark chamber far removed from 03's tiny cell, a man lounged in front of a bank of flickering monitors. His grin was twisted, a mockery of warmth, as he watched the expressions of terror and confusion play across the screens. These were his new playthings, and he reveled in their despair.

"Welcome to the game," the man continued, his voice now seeping through unseen speakers in each of the rooms. "You have all been chosen for a very special experiment. Only the strongest, the smartest, the most resourceful will survive. And the rules... are simple: there are none."

A metallic whir echoed through the room as a section of the wall slid open. The sudden flood of light was blinding, forcing 03 to shield her eyes with trembling hands. Her breath came in ragged gasps as she stumbled forward, driven by a mix of fear and the primal need to survive.

The light revealed a vast, sterile room, the walls stark white and the air unnervingly still. Around her, others were emerging from similar openings, each one dressed in crude white garments that resembled bedsheets, their faces etched with the same fear and confusion that churned within her. They were like ghosts, lost and desperate, trapped in this eerie purgatory.

As 03's pulse hammered in her ears, the man's voice returned, now thick with a condescending veneer. "I am your overseer," he declared, his words slicing through the air like a scalpel. "In this place, I am your god. You are here because you have been chosen for a grand experiment. You will face challenges that test your strength, intelligence, and resourcefulness. Only the best will survive. But remember... there are no rules."

The overseer's words hung in the air like the toll of a death knell, plunging the room into a tense silence. But the quiet was soon shattered by a man's voice, loud and defiant. A middle-aged man with a bald head and scruffy beard stepped forward, his eyes blazing with anger. "This is insane! You can't keep us here! This is some kind of sick joke!" His voice rose, trying to rally the others. "We need to fight back!"

Others began to murmur, their voices growing louder as a woman with long dark hair and a young man with short brown hair joined in, their faces twisted in a mixture of fear and defiance. But the overseer's voice returned, colder than before, slicing through their protests like a knife through flesh.

"If you cannot be civilized," he sneered, "then disciplinary actions will be taken."

A sudden, ominous glow emanated from the bald man's collar, the red light bathing his face in an eerie glow. The man's anger crumbled into raw terror as the collar began to emit a high-pitched whine. He clawed at it, eyes bulging with panic, but it was too late. With a sickening crunch, the collar detonated, sending a spray of blood and bone across the white walls. His lifeless body crumpled to the floor in a grotesque heap.

"100057 has been eliminated," a cold, female robotic voice announced, devoid of any emotion. The sound echoed in the stunned silence, leaving the remaining contestants frozen in place, their expressions twisted in horror and disbelief.

03 could only stare at the carnage, her mind struggling to comprehend the brutal reality of their situation. Her hand trembled as she touched the cold metal around her neck, the same collar that had just claimed a life. This wasn't a nightmare she could wake from. This was real—terrifyingly, agonizingly real.

The overseer's voice returned, now with a sinister edge that sent shivers down her spine. "Let this be a lesson to you all. Follow my commands, and you may survive. Defy me, and you will meet the same fate."

The room was deathly silent, save for the ragged breathing of the remaining contestants. Fear had strangled the last vestiges of resistance, leaving only the stark reality of their predicament.

In the midst of the terror, 03 noticed a young woman with wide, terrified eyes. The woman clutched her collar as if she could somehow wish it away, her hands trembling violently. A man with tattoos and piercings, who had been loudest in his protests, now stared blankly ahead, his hands shaking as he struggled to process what he had just witnessed.

The overseer's voice crackled back to life, breaking the thick tension. "Now that I have your attention," he purred, his tone filled with dark satisfaction, "we will proceed with the experiment."

With a mechanical hum, large screens descended from the ceiling, bathing the room in a harsh, unforgiving light. The screens flickered to life, displaying a series of unsettling images: shadowy corridors, hidden traps, and deadly hazards. The sight sent a wave of nausea through 03, her stomach twisting in fear.

"Your first challenge is straightforward," the overseer continued, his voice almost mocking. "You must navigate through the maze of corridors you see before you. But remember, this is no simple test of endurance. The maze will shift, and you will encounter obstacles designed to test your very will to live."

The screens flickered again, revealing a countdown timer. "You have one hour to find the exit. If you fail to escape within this time frame, the collars will activate. And I think you all know what happens next."

The contestants exchanged horrified glances, their fear magnified by the ticking clock that echoed through the room like the countdown to their doom. 03's mind raced, desperately trying to formulate a plan. But how could they possibly navigate a maze with no clear path and a layout that could change at any moment?

"Good luck, contestants," the overseer chuckled. "The experiment begins now."

With a loud, jarring clunk, the walls shifted, revealing a dark, narrow corridor at the far end of the room. The contestants hesitated, their fear palpable as they eyed the ominous passageway.

03 took a deep breath, forcing herself to move forward. The others followed, driven by the same primal instinct to survive. As they entered the maze, the walls seemed to close in around them, the darkness swallowing them whole.

The sound of the timer ticking down was a constant reminder of the stakes, each second pushing them closer to a grim fate. 03's heart raced, her mind a blur of fear and determination as she plunged deeper into the labyrinth, hoping against hope that she could outwit the maze—and the twisted mind that controlled it.
