Chapter 28 - Another Close Call

Kazuki sat in his room, the glow from his computer screen casting eerie shadows on the walls. The familiar chime echoed in his ears, signaling yet another task from the system. His heart sank as he read the details, the words almost blurring together as his mind processed the latest demand. This task was different from the others—it was more intricate, more dangerous. The system seemed to be upping the stakes with each new assignment, pushing him further to his limits.

He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples as he tried to make sense of it all. The system wanted him to sneak into a highly secure area on campus, a place no student was ever supposed to enter. The thought alone made his stomach churn, but he knew he had no choice. Failure wasn't an option—if he didn't complete the task, the consequences could be deadly.

Kazuki's fingers drummed anxiously on his desk as he mentally prepared himself. He had become frighteningly efficient at these tasks, a fact that both disturbed and reassured him. Each success only made the next challenge more daunting, as if the system was testing just how far he was willing to go. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he was changing—becoming someone he barely recognized.

The task was to retrieve a confidential document stored deep within the campus's administrative building. The document was kept in a secure room, protected by a state-of-the-art security system. Kazuki's mission was to bypass the security measures, retrieve the document, and leave without being detected. The level of difficulty was off the charts, and Kazuki knew that one mistake could cost him everything.

He couldn't afford to panic. He had to stay focused, stay sharp. The system had given him abilities—stealth, agility, and now, temporary invisibility. These skills had saved him before, and they would have to save him again tonight.

Kazuki spent hours planning his approach. He scoured campus maps, studied the building's layout, and memorized the guard patrol schedules. He even hacked into the school's security feed to monitor the cameras, noting their blind spots and the timing of the rotating shifts. His mind was a whirl of information, each detail crucial to his success.

Finally, he was ready. He donned dark clothing, blending into the night as he prepared to leave his dorm. As he exited the building, he paused for a moment, taking in the stillness of the campus. It was late, and most students were either asleep or studying in their rooms. The night was his ally—if he could stay in the shadows, he might just pull this off.

He made his way across campus, sticking to the darkest paths and avoiding the pools of light cast by the street lamps. His heart pounded in his chest, each step bringing him closer to the point of no return. When he reached the administrative building, he took a deep breath, steeling himself for what was to come.

The first hurdle was the outer security system—a series of motion detectors and surveillance cameras that guarded the entrance. Kazuki activated his temporary invisibility, feeling a strange sensation wash over him as his body seemed to melt into the night. He moved carefully, timing his steps with the rotations of the cameras. The invisibility wouldn't last long, and he knew he had to make every second count.

He slipped past the detectors and approached the main door, which was equipped with a biometric scanner. This was where things got tricky. Kazuki had anticipated this, and during his research, he had discovered a back door into the building's security system—a vulnerability that allowed him to temporarily disable the scanner. It was risky, but it was his only option.

Kazuki connected his device to the scanner, hacking into the system as quickly as he could. The seconds ticked by like hours, his nerves on edge as he worked. Finally, the scanner beeped, and the door clicked open. He slipped inside, feeling a surge of relief as the door closed softly behind him.

Inside, the building was eerily silent. The hallways were dimly lit, casting long shadows that danced on the walls as Kazuki moved through the corridors. His invisibility had worn off, and now he relied solely on his stealth skills to avoid detection. He kept his steps light and deliberate, his ears straining for any sound that might indicate someone was nearby.

The secure room was on the third floor, tucked away at the end of a long hallway. As Kazuki approached, he noticed a security guard patrolling the area, his flashlight sweeping back and forth. Kazuki's heart skipped a beat, but he remained calm, pressing himself against the wall and waiting for the right moment to move.

The guard paused near the door, checking something on his radio. Kazuki held his breath, every muscle in his body tense as he waited for the guard to move on. After what felt like an eternity, the guard finally turned and continued down the hallway. Kazuki exhaled slowly, waiting a few more seconds before moving toward the door.

The door was reinforced, with a keypad lock and another biometric scanner. Kazuki knew he couldn't hack this one—there wasn't enough time, and the guard would be back any minute. Instead, he relied on another one of his skills: lockpicking. He had learned it out of necessity during one of the system's earlier tasks, and now it was about to pay off.

He worked quickly, his hands steady despite the tension. The lock clicked open, and Kazuki slipped inside, closing the door softly behind him. The room was small and windowless, filled with filing cabinets and shelves stacked with documents. A single desk lamp illuminated the space, casting a warm glow on the polished wood of the desk.

Kazuki scanned the room, quickly locating the document he had been sent to retrieve. It was in a locked drawer, but the lock was no match for his skills. Within moments, he had the document in hand, its contents safely tucked into his backpack. Now all that was left was to get out.

As he turned to leave, he heard a noise outside the door—the sound of footsteps approaching. Kazuki's pulse quickened as he realized the guard was coming back. He had no choice but to hide. He glanced around the room, his eyes landing on a narrow space between the desk and the wall. It wasn't much, but it would have to do.

Kazuki squeezed into the space, crouching down and holding his breath as the door opened. The guard stepped into the room, his flashlight sweeping over the shelves and cabinets. Kazuki could see the beam of light just inches from his hiding spot, and he pressed himself further into the shadows, praying he wouldn't be seen.

The guard moved slowly, methodically checking the room. Kazuki's heart raced, his mind screaming at him to stay still, to not make a sound. The guard's footsteps were agonizingly slow, each one bringing him closer to Kazuki's position. For a moment, Kazuki was sure he would be found, that this would be the end.

But then, as quickly as he had entered, the guard turned and left the room, closing the door behind him. Kazuki waited, counting the seconds until he was sure the guard was gone. When he finally emerged from his hiding spot, he was drenched in sweat, his nerves frayed from the close call.

He didn't waste any more time. Kazuki made his way back to the entrance, his movements swift and silent. The tension in his chest didn't ease until he was outside, back in the safety of the night. He retraced his steps, avoiding the cameras and motion detectors, until he was finally out of the building and on his way back to his dorm.

As he walked, the adrenaline began to wear off, leaving him feeling drained and shaken. The encounter with the guard had rattled him more than he cared to admit, and for the first time, he truly understood just how dangerous these tasks were becoming. The system was pushing him harder, testing his limits, and he was starting to wonder how much longer he could keep this up.

When he finally reached his room, Kazuki collapsed onto his bed, the weight of the night's events pressing down on him. He had completed the task, but the cost was starting to feel too high. Each mission chipped away at his morals, his sense of right and wrong blurring with each success. He was becoming something he never wanted to be—a tool for the system, a pawn in its twisted game.

Kazuki lay there in the darkness, the document still safely tucked in his backpack. The system would be pleased, no doubt rewarding him with more power, more abilities to aid in his tasks. But at what cost? He was losing himself, becoming someone he didn't recognize, someone who could sneak into a secure room, steal a confidential document, and escape without a trace.

The system had given him power, but it was power he never wanted. And as he lay there, staring up at the ceiling, Kazuki wondered how much longer he could keep going before he lost himself completely.
