Kazuki sat hunched over his desk, his eyes fixated on the piece of paper in front of him. The room was dimly lit, and the only sound was the soft hum of his desk lamp. On the paper, he had drawn a rough sketch of the girls' locker room, complete with hastily scribbled notes and arrows pointing in every direction.
"Okay, let's see…" Kazuki muttered to himself, tapping his pen against his chin. "If I enter from the east side, I can hide behind the lockers until the coast is clear. But what about the security cameras? And the door—what if it squeaks when I open it?"
He sighed and leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples in frustration. The task at hand was nothing short of impossible. The girls' locker room was one of the most heavily guarded areas on campus. Not only was there a security camera positioned right outside the entrance, but the door itself had been recently reinforced after a series of break-ins the previous semester. Kazuki had overheard some of the other guys in his dorm joking about how even a ninja would have a hard time sneaking in undetected.
A ninja… that's what Kazuki felt like he needed to be. The system had already given him a boost in agility and stealth, but even with those enhancements, this task felt like a suicide mission. He needed to be careful—one wrong move, and his life would be over. Literally.
"Maybe I should just quit while I'm ahead," Kazuki muttered, slumping forward and burying his face in his arms. "Is this really worth it?"
But as much as he wanted to give up, the memory of the system's warning lingered in the back of his mind. Failure wasn't an option. If he didn't complete this task, he knew the consequences would be dire. So, with a heavy sigh, Kazuki sat up and forced himself to focus.
"Okay, Kazuki," he whispered, trying to psych himself up. "You can do this. You just need a plan. A foolproof plan. Think like a ninja… no, think like a spy. You've got the skills now. Use them."
With renewed determination, Kazuki leaned over his makeshift map and began strategizing in earnest. He mentally mapped out every step he would need to take, every obstacle he might encounter. His new agility would help him move quickly and quietly, while his improved stealth would keep him hidden from view. The only thing left to do was put it all into practice.
As he worked, Kazuki's mind kept drifting back to the events of the previous day. The way he had slipped in and out of the locker room undetected… it had been exhilarating, in a way. He had felt like a shadow, invisible and untouchable. But at the same time, the guilt had gnawed at him, making him question his own morality. Was he really becoming the kind of person who could do something like this without a second thought?
"No," Kazuki muttered to himself, shaking his head. "This isn't about who I am. It's about survival. I have to do this."
Just as Kazuki was starting to feel more confident in his plan, there was a sudden knock at his door. He jumped, startled out of his thoughts, and quickly shoved the map into his desk drawer. His heart pounded in his chest as he stood up and opened the door a crack, peering out to see who it was.
To his surprise, it was Haruka.
"Haruka!" Kazuki stammered, his voice cracking slightly. "W-What are you doing here?"
Haruka stood in the hallway, her arms crossed over her chest, her expression a mix of concern and suspicion. "Kazuki, can I come in?"
"Uh, yeah, sure, come in!" Kazuki said, stepping aside to let her enter. His mind raced as he tried to think of a way to deflect whatever questions she might have. The last thing he needed was for Haruka to find out what he was up to.
Haruka walked into the room and looked around, her eyes lingering on the messy desk and the hastily closed drawer. "What's going on, Kazuki? You've been acting really strange lately. Is everything okay?"
Kazuki forced a laugh, trying to sound casual. "Oh, you know, just… school stuff. Assignments, exams, that kind of thing. It's been really stressful."
"Uh-huh," Haruka said, clearly not convinced. She narrowed her eyes at him, her gaze piercing. "And you've been avoiding me, too. Every time I try to talk to you, you brush me off or change the subject. What's going on?"
Kazuki felt his palms start to sweat. He hadn't been expecting Haruka to be this direct. "N-No, it's not like that! I've just been really busy, that's all. Nothing to worry about!"
"Nothing to worry about?" Haruka repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Kazuki, I'm your friend. You can talk to me if something's bothering you. You know that, right?"
Kazuki swallowed hard, his mind scrambling for a way out of this conversation. He couldn't tell her the truth—not about the system, not about the tasks, and definitely not about what he was planning to do. But at the same time, he hated lying to her. Haruka had always been there for him, ever since they were kids. She deserved better than this.
"Look, Haruka, I appreciate your concern, really," Kazuki said, trying to sound sincere. "But there's nothing to worry about. I'm just dealing with some… personal stuff. It's not a big deal."
"Personal stuff?" Haruka echoed, her suspicion growing. "Like what?"
Kazuki panicked. He needed to come up with something, anything, to throw her off the scent. "Uh, you know, just… guy stuff. You wouldn't really understand."
Haruka's expression softened slightly, but she still didn't look convinced. "Guy stuff, huh? Like what, girl trouble?"
"Yeah! Exactly!" Kazuki blurted out, grateful for the lifeline. "Girl trouble. That's it. Nothing serious, just… you know, typical guy stuff."
Haruka sighed and shook her head. "Kazuki, you're a terrible liar. You know that, right?"
Kazuki's heart skipped a beat. "W-What do you mean? I'm not lying!"
Haruka gave him a skeptical look. "Kazuki, you're sweating, and your voice is all shaky. You're definitely hiding something. Just tell me the truth, okay? I'm worried about you."
Kazuki opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out. He was trapped. He couldn't tell Haruka the truth, but he also couldn't keep lying to her. The guilt was eating him alive.
"Haruka, I…" Kazuki began, but before he could finish, there was another knock at the door. Kazuki's heart leaped into his throat, and he quickly glanced over at Haruka. "Hold that thought!"
He rushed to the door and opened it a crack, peeking out to see who it was this time. To his horror, it was Mikako Asami, the elegant woman who frequented the convenience store where he worked part-time.
"M-Mikako-san!" Kazuki stammered, his mind racing. "What are you doing here?"
Mikako smiled warmly at him, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd drop by. Is this a bad time?"
Kazuki glanced back at Haruka, who was now looking at him with even more suspicion. "Uh, no, it's fine! Come on in!"
Mikako entered the room gracefully, her presence filling the small space. She looked around, taking in the cluttered desk and the nervous energy in the air. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."
Haruka's eyes widened in surprise. "Kazuki, who is this?"
Kazuki's mind went blank. He had no idea how to explain this situation to Haruka, especially not when he was already struggling to keep his secrets hidden. "Uh, Haruka, this is Mikako-san. She's a… friend."
"A friend?" Haruka repeated, her voice laced with disbelief. "Kazuki, you've never mentioned her before."
Kazuki's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "Well, we just… met recently. It's nothing serious."
Mikako chuckled softly, clearly amused by Kazuki's awkwardness. "Don't worry, Haruka-chan. Kazuki and I are just acquaintances. I'm not here to cause any trouble."
Haruka's expression softened slightly, but she still looked suspicious. "Okay… if you say so."
Kazuki let out a silent sigh of relief, grateful that Mikako had defused the situation. But his relief was short-lived, as Mikako turned to him with a teasing smile.
"So, Kazuki-kun," Mikako said, her voice dripping with playful curiosity. "What were you and Haruka-chan talking about before I arrived? It looked like a pretty serious conversation."
Kazuki felt his heart start to race again. "Oh, uh, nothing important! Just, you know, school stuff."
"School stuff?" Mikako echoed, raising an eyebrow. "Are you sure? Because Haruka-chan looks a little upset."
Haruka crossed her arms over her chest, clearly not amused. "Kazuki, what's going on? Why is she here?"
Kazuki felt like he was caught in a trap, with no way out. The
tension in the room was palpable, and he could feel both Haruka and Mikako's eyes on him, waiting for an explanation. But what could he say? How could he possibly explain this without digging himself an even deeper hole?
Before Kazuki could come up with a response, the system's voice suddenly chimed in his mind, its tone as cheerful as ever. "Kazuki-kun, this is getting interesting! Two girls at once? You're really leveling up your game, aren't you?"
Kazuki nearly choked. "Not now!" he hissed under his breath, trying to keep his voice low.
"Aw, come on, Kazuki-kun! Don't be shy! You've got this! Just tell them the truth!"
Kazuki shot a panicked glance at Haruka and Mikako, who were both watching him intently. He forced a nervous laugh, trying to play it off. "Sorry, just… thinking out loud!"
Mikako smiled knowingly, while Haruka's suspicion only deepened. "Kazuki, you're acting really weird. Are you sure everything's okay?"
Kazuki could feel the walls closing in on him. He had to do something, anything, to get out of this situation before it spiraled out of control. But as he stood there, frozen in place, the system's voice chimed in once again.
"Don't worry, Kazuki-kun! Just follow my lead, and everything will be fine!"
Kazuki took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. "Okay, look, I… I've been under a lot of stress lately. School, work, you know, the usual. I didn't mean to worry you, Haruka. And Mikako-san, I appreciate you stopping by, but maybe now isn't the best time…"
Mikako's smile remained, but there was a hint of something more in her eyes—curiosity, perhaps, or even amusement. "I understand, Kazuki-kun. I didn't mean to intrude. But if you ever need someone to talk to, you know where to find me."
With that, Mikako gave him a gentle pat on the shoulder and turned to leave. As she walked out the door, she paused and glanced back at Haruka. "Take care of him, Haruka-chan. He seems like he could use a friend."
Haruka nodded, still looking somewhat bewildered by the whole situation. "Yeah… I will."
As soon as Mikako was gone, Kazuki let out a long, shaky breath and slumped against the doorframe. "That… was way too close."
Haruka stepped forward, her concern evident in her eyes. "Kazuki, seriously… what's going on? You're not acting like yourself."
Kazuki forced a smile, though it felt hollow. "I'm fine, Haruka. Really. I just… need some time to figure things out."
Haruka looked like she wanted to say more, but she simply sighed and nodded. "Okay. But if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. You don't have to go through this alone."
Kazuki's smile faltered, and he felt a pang of guilt in his chest. Haruka was being so kind, so understanding, and here he was, lying to her face. But what choice did he have? He couldn't drag her into this mess. It was better if she stayed in the dark.
"Thanks, Haruka," Kazuki said softly. "I appreciate it."
With that, Haruka gave him a small smile and left, leaving Kazuki alone with his thoughts. As the door closed behind her, Kazuki let out a weary sigh and sank down onto his bed, burying his face in his hands.
The system's voice chimed in again, its tone as chipper as ever. "Well, that was fun, wasn't it? You handled that like a pro, Kazuki-kun!"
Kazuki groaned. "Just… leave me alone for a while, okay?"
"Aw, don't be like that, Kazuki-kun! You're doing great! Just keep up the good work, and you'll be fine!"
Kazuki didn't respond. He was too exhausted, too drained to even argue. All he could do was lay there, staring up at the ceiling, and wonder how much longer he could keep this up. The tasks were getting harder, the stakes were getting higher, and Kazuki felt like he was slowly losing his grip on reality.
But no matter how tough things got, he knew one thing for certain: he had to keep going. He had to survive, no matter what. Because as long as the system was in control, there was no turning back.
And so, with a heavy heart and a mind full of doubts, Kazuki closed his eyes and prepared himself for whatever came next. The path ahead was uncertain, but he had no choice but to walk it, one step at a time.
