Chapter 279 - Chapter 279: A Mother with a Natural Monster-Attracting Aura?

With the boost from the magic crystal, the Demon Wolf King grew to over five meters in length. Even its once-normal-sized wolf companions now stood at over two meters tall, as big as young bulls.

Zenith, who had previously been capped as an Advanced-level Mage, broke through to Saint-level magic during her time in the magic-rich environment of the moving labyrinth. Now, after absorbing the magic crystal, her magical strength had increased further, giving her hope of reaching the elusive King-level magic user threshold.

Norn, whose magical talent was previously quite mediocre, saw her potential grow thanks to the magic crystal, enough that she could finally catch up with Aisha in strength.

"I was done with slaughtering humans after submitting to my master, but since you're the ones courting death, I can't be blamed for what comes next," the Demon Wolf King declared.

Having grown even stronger, the Demon Wolf King no longer needed to communicate telepathically and could now speak human language.

Seeing the massive, five-meter-long beast that not only had intelligence but also spoke like a human, the adventurers who had initially harbored malicious intent now looked terrified.

A magical beast of this size and intelligence was clearly not something ordinary. Even using basic logic, it was evident that this was no ordinary beast. It would take an S-rank adventurer party at the very least to stand a chance against it.

"We didn't know who we were messing with, please spare us! We swear we won't do it again!" one of the adventurers pleaded, dropping to his knees.

If this had been the old Zenith, she might have considered showing mercy, as she was a devout follower of the Millis Church. However, this time, she remained cold and unresponsive, silently turning her back on the adventurers and leading Norn and Aisha away.

What was about to happen wasn't something for children to see.

Zenith had always been gentle and kind, but with Wood in a coma, she had taken on the responsibility of protecting him and the two young girls. If those adventurers had only targeted her, she might have let it go, but they had dared to threaten her children. That crossed a line she could never forgive.

After Zenith and the girls left, the Demon Wolf King gave a signal with its eyes, and its pack howled, charging at the group of adventurers.

The Demon Wolf King's subordinates, having grown significantly in power, were now as strong as Intermediate-level Swordsmen, with the added advantage of fire resistance and incredible vitality.

As for the Demon Wolf King itself, after its recent evolution, its strength now rivaled that of a Sword Saint, and it could even cast Advanced-level magic instantly. A regular Sword Saint wouldn't stand a chance against it.

The group of ten or so adventurers who had planned to attack Zenith were now facing the full might of the wolves. The Demon Wolf King had initially hoped to test its newfound strength in a proper fight.

But it quickly realized that these adventurers were nowhere near the level of opponents it had faced before, like Wood and Zenith.

Not all adventurers were like Wood, and even those at S-rank like Zenith were rare. For example, Paul and Zenith, being Advanced-level Swordsman and Mage, were already considered elite in any adventuring group.

The Demon Wolf King's pack ripped through the adventurers like wolves among sheep. They stood no chance.

These adventurers were already nervous, their fear exacerbated by the intimidating presence of the Demon Wolf King. In such a state, they couldn't even perform at their usual level.

"Pathetic! Is this the best humanity's adventurers have to offer? To think you had the audacity to harbor ill intentions toward my master's mother!" the Demon Wolf King spat in disgust. With a snarl, it turned and walked away, leaving its pack to finish off the adventurers.

For the Demon Wolf King, this had been nothing but a waste of time. The adventurers were so weak that it felt beneath the mighty wolf to engage them.

As the sounds of the adventurers' dying screams filled the air behind them, Norn, out of curiosity, tried to glance back, only to be stopped by Zenith's stern gaze, which quickly made her behave.

Walking to the Millis Holy Kingdom's capital was far too inconvenient, especially since they needed to let Wood rest. So, after arriving at the next town, Zenith purchased a luxurious carriage and some supplies.

But it seemed that Zenith had some kind of natural "monster magnet" aura. As a beautiful woman traveling with two children and an obvious display of wealth, she once again attracted the wrong kind of attention.

Predictably, the same scenario repeated itself, with the Demon Wolf King's pack tearing through a new group of attackers, while the Demon Wolf King mocked the adventurers' weakness all over again.

To be fair, humans weren't inherently weak. It was just that the adventurers of this world weren't particularly strong.

Most people who became adventurers did so out of necessity. Those who reached Advanced-level or higher would often find stable, well-paying jobs in any kingdom and didn't need to risk their lives adventuring.

Zenith wasn't intentionally luring these would-be criminals in by appearing weak. The Demon Wolf King and its pack were magical beasts, and bringing them into town would only cause unnecessary panic. That's why she left them outside.

Ultimately, it was human greed that led these men to their deaths.

As Norn excitedly recounted to Wood all the events that had happened while he was unconscious, Wood could only respond with a helpless smile.

After being unconscious for three days, Wood finally woke up, feeling a bit stiff but otherwise fine. In fact, his magic power had significantly increased during his rest.

Wood had always been somewhat behind Rudy in terms of magic power, but now, after his ordeal, he felt that he might have caught up.

"Zenith, I told you I'm fine now. Even Norn and Aisha can feed themselves..." Wood began, watching his mother approach him with food.

Before he could finish, Zenith cut him off with an uncharacteristically sharp tone.

"Fine? You were unconscious for three whole days! You're still a patient, so just sit there and behave!"

Though Wood had woken up three days later feeling much better, with no lingering effects besides a little weakness from not eating and some burns on his skin, his mother still insisted on treating him as if he were gravely ill.
