Since the market crash, most of the Japanese people had finally disappeared from Lanai Island. It wouldn't be realistic to say they were completely gone, but there certainly were fewer of them.
It wasn't entirely desolate either. Lanai Island had a unique location and a very pleasant environment. if the Japanese didn't feel like playing around, there were still Hong Kong and Taiwan, both of which were developing nicely.
Most importantly, there were indeed plenty of opportunities here. The new IT elites of Silicon Valley particularly enjoyed coming here for relaxation.
William White came to Lanai Island today, but he wasn't looking for pirates. He wanted to see how many valuable resources, including gold, diamonds, jade, etc. they had acquired.
