Chapter 21 - Wrong target

At the hospital's hallway, Frances sat beside Anne, who looked distraught.

"What's wrong?" Frances asked, concern etched on her face.

"I lost her," Anne replied, her voice shaking.

"Don't worry, Anne. Roberts is with the doctor," Frances reassured her.

"I'm so sorry, Aunt."

"It's not your fault."

Suddenly, a pregnant woman burst in, shouting for a doctor.

"I need a doctor! The baby is coming! Help me!" Selina cried out.

"Ma'am, you're in labor. You can't keep screaming like this," Nurse 2 responded calmly.

"I want a doctor! I don't want nurses delivering my baby; I want an expert!" Selina insisted, panic rising in her voice.

"We're very experienced," Nurse 1 replied, trying to comfort her.

"You're wasting your time. No doctor, no delivery!" Selina shot back.

"Stay with her while I go get the doctor," Nurse 3 said before exiting quickly.

"My baby is coming! I need a doctor!" Selina cried out again.

"Take a deep breath; the doctor is on his way," Nurse 2 advised.

"I can't! The pain is unbearable! Ahhh!" Selina screamed.

Nurse 3 re-entered with Doctor Henry and Roberts.

"What's going on?" Henry asked, surveying the scene.

"She doesn't want us to deliver her baby," Nurse 2 explained.

"I'll take care of her. Bring her to Ward 5," Henry instructed.

They all moved into Ward 5 while Roberts remained outside the door.

"I'll take it from here," Henry said, and the nurses nodded before exiting.

"Ma'am, calm down. Inhale and exhale," Henry urged.

"It's Selina, not 'ma'am,'" she corrected him sharply.

Without warning, she injected him with a syringe filled with snake venom.

"Why... are..." he choked out.

"It's snake venom. You have five seconds to live," she replied coldly.

"Officer… off…" he gasped before collapsing to the ground, lifeless.

"Bye-bye forever. Say hi to Daddy," Selina said matter-of-factly, quickly changing into a nurse's outfit.

"Time to go," she muttered as she exited the ward.

Outside, she met Roberts.

"Is the doctor okay? And the patient? Of course, she isn't shouting," he said, puzzled.

Selina chuckled. "Not all women scream when giving birth. That one is a tough cookie."

"I agree," Roberts said, raising an eyebrow.

"Excuse me, officer," she said, dashing off.

"Wait a minute! I thought the two nurses left. It was just the doctor and the pregnant—" he began, but she was already gone.

Roberts entered the ward, calling, "Doctor Henry!"

He checked his pulse, eyes widening in horror. "Oh no! He's dead. I messed up big time."

Grabbing his walkie-talkie, he reported, "She is in the hospital; I repeat, she is in the hospital. I'm sorry, Doctor."

Back at the hallway, Anne leaned against the wall, disbelief and concern etched on her face as she spoke to Frances, who looked equally worried.

"How did she pull off that makeover? A pregnant woman? Selina is insane," Anne exclaimed.

"She has to be stopped," Frances replied.

"No more Doctor Henry; it's really sad," Anne said softly.

"Yeah, he was my doctor," Frances lamented.

"Where is she getting the weapons? How did she extract venom from a snake?" Anne questioned.

"What can I say? She isn't our Selina anymore," Frances said, a tear rolling down her cheek.

Roberts entered, his expression serious. "Let's go to your college; she's heading there."

"Okay. Let's go, Aunt," Anne agreed.

In the street, Selina ran, glancing over her shoulder, the weight of fear pressing down on her.

"They're after me; I have to hide," she muttered to herself, quickening her pace until she bumped into Jake.

"Hi, Selina!" he exclaimed.

She shrieked, "Oh my God, you almost gave me a heart attack!"

"Thanks for deceiving me again," he replied, disappointment heavy in his voice.

"Jake, you don't understand. I can't quit now; I won't accomplish my mission," she insisted.

"What if you get killed? What then? Mission incomplete? You're playing with lives—human lives. You even killed your own father," he warned.

"He wasn't my father! He never wanted me. He told Mom to abort me, but she didn't listen. He's a monster!" Selina cried, tears streaming down her face.

"What?" Jake asked, stunned.

"I asked him to tell me the truth before he died," she confessed.

"You mean before you killed him? Selina, you're ruining your life—and mine too. You're dragging my reputation through the mud," Jake shot back.

"Is that all you care about? Your reputation?" Selina retorted.

"I warned you for your own good. I don't want anything bad to happen to you. How else can I prove my love?" he pleaded.

"Let me finish this. I'm not asking for your help, just your support," she replied.

"I supported you when you needed it. I can't support your evil ways. Your mom is worried sick about you," he said, frustration in his voice.

"Leave her out of this!" Selina snapped.

"Selina, it's now or never. I came to stop you, or you'll watch me die," Jake said, pulling out a gun and pointing it at his head.

"Are you threatening me with your life?" she asked incredulously.

"Prove your love," he said firmly.

"I'm being chased by Roberts, and you want to kill yourself?" she exclaimed.

"I have no other option. I'm counting to ten," he said, steeling himself.

"Jake, think! You're not making any sense!" she cried.

"Ten!" he shouted.

"Jake, please stop! I can't lose you!" she begged.

"Nine!" he continued, unfaltering.

As he counted down, Selina lunged for the gun. They struggled until a shot rang out.

"Jake?" Selina whispered, fear creeping into her voice.

"Selina... please stop," he gasped.

"No! Jake! Please don't leave me!" she cried, desperation flooding her voice.

"For my sake... surrender... I love..." he breathed out, his voice fading.

"Jake? No! AHHHHHHHHH!" she screamed, the sound echoing through the empty street.

In the dimly lit room of her hideout, Selina sobbed uncontrollably, her face buried in her hands as she paced back and forth.

"No, no, it's a nightmare. Jake is pretending; he wants me to stop, right? This can't be happening. Jaaaaake, stupid me! Why did I let revenge consume me like this? I... I am responsible for Jake. No, no, he is still alive. Jake, I'm sorry! I'm a fool for not listening to you. I promise, I'll surrender. Jake, don't leave me."

She grabbed her phone and dialed a number.

"Hello? Is he going to be alright? No, he isn't dead; he's alive! He's just taking a nap, I swear. Listen to me, doctor—wake him up or else... No, no, noooooo! Jake! Please wake up! Someone tell me this is a dream. I want to wake up and see my Jake again. Why? Why did I—"

Suddenly, she heard footsteps outside.

"No, no! How did they find me? Jake? He wants me to stop for my own good. I swear, I, Selina Frances, promise to surrender... when I'm done. I'm sorry, Jake."

She exited in a rush as Roberts, Anne, and Frances entered, looking anxious.

"Freeze! She escaped. So, it was true; she was hiding right under our noses this whole time," Roberts announced.

"Oh God. But I don't understand why she would kill Jake. She loves him!" Anne exclaimed.

Frances was in tears. "My daughter is a monster. I just don't know what to do. I'm so confused."

"It's okay, Aunt. Please don't stress yourself," Anne reassured her.

"Anne, did Selina have any other friends apart from you?" Roberts asked, his tone serious.

"None that I'm aware of," Anne replied.

"Are you telling me that Selina, twenty-five years old, is pulling off all these plans herself?" Roberts pressed.

"I don't know, Officer. I don't know her anymore," Anne admitted, a mix of fear and sadness in her voice.

"Let's go to your college," Roberts decided, urgency in his steps.

They exited quickly, their minds racing with worry.

Selina entered the mansion cautiously, her heart pounding as she approached a well-dressed French lady.

"Bonjour," she said, trying to mask her anxiety.

"Oh, you scared me! Who are you? Why are your eyes swollen? Have you been crying?" the lady asked, taken aback.

"It's a long story I can't explain right now," Selina replied, urgency in her tone.

"So what do you want?" the lady pressed.

"I heard you're meeting with Mr. Joe,"

"You heard? From who?" the lady inquired, suspicion evident.

Selina's patience wore thin. "From someone. Just answer yes or no."

"I don't like your tone. Speak to me with respect," the lady shot back.

"Let me go in your place. I have unfinished business with Mr. Joe," Selina insisted.

"That's your problem, not mine," the lady retorted.

"Please, it's the only way I can reach him before Roberts catches me," Selina urged.

"Who is Roberts?" the lady asked, her tone wary.

"A police officer," Selina replied.

"Are you a criminal?" the lady pressed, alarm rising.

"Yes."

"Security! Security!" the lady shouted.

"They're all taking a nap; they won't hear you," Selina said coolly.

"Did you kill them?" the lady gasped.

"They're not on my list. They'll wake up soon. Please help me, and don't involve the police," Selina pleaded.

"My life is more important than my meeting with Joe," the lady said, weighing her options.

"Exactly. Thank you," Selina smirked.

"Alright, you can leave now," the lady finally conceded.

Selina nodded, turning to leave, but then suddenly grabbed a vase and struck the French lady on the head. "Bon voyage, stupid. Now, let's see your finest clothes," she declared before heading upstairs to search for a disguise.
