The night sky was a canvas of deep indigo, dotted with stars that seemed to wink mischievously as the group trudged through the dense forest. The sound of rustling leaves and the occasional snap of a twig beneath their feet accompanied their journey. Shadows loomed large, twisting into eerie shapes that danced in the flickering light of their torches.
Sam broke the silence, his voice laced with curiosity, "Hey Mark, how are we even going to find Lukas? Do you have any plans?"
Mark, walking slightly ahead, glanced back, his face partially obscured by the darkness. "I think I have an idea where he might be, but I'm not entirely sure. Lukas is... unpredictable."
Sam nodded, his thoughts shifting as he turned to Alan, "You mentioned earlier that Lukas is the guy you hate most. Why's that?"
Alan sighed, his expression hardening. "He was special from the day he was born. His parents spoiled him rotten, especially his older brother, who was the former captain of Squad 8. When his brother lost his arm in a battle, Lukas became their family's last hope. And that made him arrogant, unbearably so. He never talked to anyone, always looked down on others like they were beneath him. That's why I hate him."
Sam tilted his head, a mischievous grin playing on his lips. "And what's the deal with the whole 'second hottest guy' thing?"
Alan chuckled despite himself. "Well, he is very handsome. Almost every girl in the Shade Society has a crush on him."
Sam raised an eyebrow. "And who's ranked number one?"
Mark chimed in, his tone casual, "That would be none other than Fedrick's right-hand man, Daniel."
Sam feigned disbelief, placing a hand dramatically on his chest. "He's more handsome than me?"
Mark smirked, "Who do you think you are?"
Sam laughed, the sound lightening the mood. "Yeah, you're right. Maybe being popular at school made me a little arrogant too."
Mark thought to himself, "I'm not sure, but maybe he's right. Sam might even be prettier than Daniel."
As they continued walking, Sara's voice cut through the banter, laced with concern, "Yeah, but don't you think traveling through this forest at night is a little dangerous?"
Mark waved off her worries, "Don't tell me you guys are afraid of monsters."
Masha, who had been quiet until now, spoke up, her voice trembling slightly. "Well, not particularly monsters. It's the ghosts we're afraid of."
The group chuckled, the tension easing as they decided to set up camp for the night. The crackle of the fire soon filled the air, its warm glow pushing back the darkness. As the others busied themselves with their tasks, Sam found himself sitting beside Sara, the firelight casting soft shadows across her face.
Sara looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the dancing flames. "You know, it's moments like these that make everything we're going through feel... worth it."
Sam smiled, his hand reaching out to gently tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Yeah, I know what you mean."
There was a quiet pause, the world around them fading into the background. Sam's heart raced as he leaned in closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "Sara..."
Before he could finish, Sara closed the distance between them, pressing her lips to his. The kiss was gentle, tender, and filled with a warmth that chased away the coldness of the night. When they finally pulled away, both were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other.
"I'm glad you're here," Sam murmured, his thumb brushing against her cheek.
"Me too," Sara whispered back, her smile soft and sincere.
As they sat there, wrapped in each other's presence, the forest around them seemed less ominous, the night less daunting. In that moment, surrounded by uncertainty and danger, they found solace in each other—a brief respite from the battles that lay ahead.
