Chapter 60 - The City

The atmosphere in the city was tense, a feeling that only grew stronger as Sara, Masha, and Alan were escorted through the narrow streets by a group of grim-faced guards. The city was unlike anything they had seen before, a mix of ancient stone architecture and haphazard wooden structures. The streets were bustling with people, yet there was an oppressive silence that hung over everything, as if the entire population was holding its breath.

Sara, Masha, and Alan exchanged uneasy glances, each of them acutely aware that they were in unfamiliar and potentially hostile territory. The inhabitants of the city watched them with a mix of curiosity and distrust, their eyes wary and suspicious.

As they walked, Alan leaned in closer to Masha and Sara, his voice low and urgent. "Listen carefully. The people here can't use magic, and they hate magic users—especially after what the Shade Society has done to them. We need to be extremely careful. Don't use any magic, no matter what happens. If they find out what we are, we could be in serious trouble."

Masha nodded, her usual confident demeanor replaced by a rare look of concern. "Got it. But what if we're attacked?"

"We'll have to rely on our physical skills," Alan replied, his eyes scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger. "Just remember, if they suspect we can use magic, it could be a death sentence. Stay calm, and follow my lead."

Sara, usually the most vocal of the group, was uncharacteristically quiet. She understood the gravity of their situation and nodded in agreement. "We've come this far together. We'll get through this too."

The guards led them to a large, imposing building near the center of the city. The structure was made of dark stone, its exterior worn and weathered, giving it an air of foreboding. As they approached, the heavy wooden doors creaked open, and they were ushered inside.

The interior of the building was dimly lit, with only a few flickering torches casting long shadows across the walls. The guards guided them through a series of corridors before finally arriving in a large hall. At the far end of the room sat a man dressed in dark robes, his face partially obscured by the shadows.

"This is the city's leader," one of the guards explained in a gruff voice. "He will decide what to do with you."

Alan kept his expression neutral, but inside, he was calculating their options. He needed to ensure that they weren't perceived as a threat, but he also had to be prepared for the worst.

The leader regarded them with a steely gaze, his eyes narrowing as he studied each of them in turn. "You are strangers here," he said, his voice cold and distant. "Why have you come to our city?"

Alan stepped forward, bowing his head slightly in a gesture of respect. "We mean no harm. We were separated from our friend after passing through the Void. We're just trying to reunite with him and find a way out of this place."

The leader's gaze lingered on Alan for a moment before shifting to Masha and Sara. "And what makes you think you can survive in this city? We do not take kindly to outsiders, especially those who bring trouble."

"We're not here to cause trouble," Masha replied, her voice steady despite the tension. "We're just trying to find our friend. Once we do, we'll leave peacefully."

The leader leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "Very well. You may stay for now, but you will be watched closely. Any sign of magic, and you will be executed on the spot. Do I make myself clear?"

"Crystal," Alan answered, his tone firm but respectful.

With a curt nod, the leader dismissed them, and the guards escorted them out of the hall. As they walked through the city, Alan couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched by more than just the guards. The oppressive atmosphere weighed heavily on him, and he knew they needed to tread carefully.

As the group was led to a small, sparsely furnished room where they would be staying, Masha caught Alan's eye. "What do we do now?"

"We need to find out more about this place," Alan replied, his mind already working on a plan. "We need information—about the city, its people, and any possible way to contact Sam. But above all, we need to stay out of trouble."

Sara, who had been silent for most of the day, finally spoke up. "What if Sam tries to find us and gets caught? We need to figure out a way to let him know we're here."

Alan nodded. "We'll have to be careful, but we can't afford to sit around waiting for something to happen. Let's see if we can blend in, learn what we can, and keep a low profile."

As the three of them settled into the small room, a subtle shift occurred in the group dynamic. Masha found herself reflecting on their journey together so far—how Alan had consistently kept a level head, how he had taken charge in difficult situations, and how he always seemed to know the right thing to say to keep everyone calm.

It wasn't so much the close quarters or the danger that drew her closer to Alan, but rather the realization of how much she had come to trust and respect him. Alan had proven himself time and again as a reliable leader, someone who cared deeply about the group's well-being. Masha couldn't help but admire that, and as she thought more about it, she realized that her feelings for him were starting to shift from mere camaraderie to something deeper.

Later that evening, as they sat around a small table eating a meager meal provided by the city's inhabitants, Masha found herself sitting closer to Alan. Their conversation flowed easily, and she couldn't help but feel a warmth spread through her when he reassured Sara about their next steps.

"Thanks for keeping us safe today," Masha said softly, her voice laced with genuine gratitude.

Alan looked at her, slightly surprised by the sincerity in her tone. "We're a team, Masha. We look out for each other."

Masha nodded, her eyes lingering on his for a moment before she looked away, her thoughts a swirl of emotions she hadn't expected.

As the night grew darker, and the city settled into an uneasy silence, the bond between the three of them strengthened. Sara remained quiet but determined, Alan ever vigilant, and Masha… well, she was beginning to realize that her feelings for Alan were more than just admiration.

For now, they were safe, but the dangers of the Void were far from over. They would need to rely on each other more than ever if they were to survive and reunite with Sam.
