Chapter 37 - 37.fictional town

The Giant Axe Adventurer Team was clearly not a wealthy one, and they rarely had spare money to buy drinks. When Charlotte treated them to drinks, not only were the three male team members happy, but even the blonde Hanna and the short-haired brunette Hermosa were delighted.

Old John also brought out a roasted wild boar leg, which was included as a complimentary gift for buying drinks. Everyone used small knives to slice off thin pieces to accompany their drinks, and the atmosphere quickly became lively.

Two hours after Charlotte arrived in the village, a seven-person team also entered this small village. These people were dressed in black coats, just like Wells and Edison, which was the signature uniform of the Fiery Horse Detective Agency. These black coats were highly resistant to water and wind, could even withstand some sword strikes, and had several hidden pockets inside, making them very convenient for long journeys.

Winterbourne said, "It's too late, we can't continue. Let's stay in this village for the night."

"Edison, go and ask around to see whose house we can stay at in the village."

Winterbourne was the leader of this team, 48 years old, a fourth-level superhuman, and a mid-level officer in the Fiery Horse Detective Agency. He was quite well-known among his peers and had considerable influence within the agency.

Edison hurried off and soon returned, saying, "Old John's house at the end of the village has room."

The team quickly moved out. When they knocked on Old John's door, the noise woke Charlotte, who was already asleep. He immediately activated his Insight ability, covering Old John's entire house.

"The Fiery Horse Detective Agency? How did they catch up?"

Charlotte was shocked and hesitated for a moment, but he didn't leave immediately. Any movement now would give him away.

The team from the Fiery Horse Detective Agency didn't seem to notice that their target was right under their noses. After asking about the adventurer team staying there, Winterbourne didn't ask any more questions. They ordered some food, ate quickly, and then slept in another room arranged by Old John.

Charlotte didn't dare to sleep again. He closed his eyes and slowly operated his Blood Glory ability, enduring the night with difficulty.

The people from the Fiery Horse Detective Agency set out at dawn.

Charlotte breathed a sigh of relief.

After a while, the members of the Giant Axe Adventurer Team began to wake up one by one. As an adventurer team, they had basic vigilance and knew that another group had arrived last night, but since nothing had happened, they didn't react.

Charlotte gathered with everyone, had a simple breakfast, and then they set off towards Yorktown.

Charlotte felt somewhat uncomfortable. In Strasbourg, he rarely walked and had long been accustomed to taking public carriages. This time, however, he had to walk all the way to Yorktown because the journey was all on mountain paths, where carriages couldn't go. Even if they could, the Giant Axe Adventurer Team wouldn't hire one because long-distance carriage hire outside the city was too expensive.

Even though he had advanced to the third level of superhuman, Charlotte still found the journey quite exhausting. He thought to himself, "I need to train harder, condense the blood vortex in my right leg, and master the runes for Agile and Spider."

"Or maybe I should buy a carriage and drive myself…"

Winterbourne's team had already arrived at the estate Charlotte had specified yesterday. They stayed for over an hour, asked around, confirmed that Charlotte wasn't there, and continued down a road to pursue him.

Although the Fiery Horse Detective Agency had many detectives, they had only one superhuman following the path of divination, like Wells. Before setting out, they had a wizard try to trace Charlotte, but the wizard could only provide a direction with no further details.

Charlotte didn't know that he had narrowly escaped. As he silently complained, they finally reached Yorktown.

This was a fairly large town with nearly a thousand residents. The famous demon hunter, White Wolf, had built a large log cabin in the town center. In front of the cabin, there were already forty to fifty people, divided into a dozen small groups, whispering among themselves.

The arrival of the Giant Axe Adventurer Team was met with unanimous hostility because they were yet another group of competitors.

Charlotte had become quite familiar with his five teammates during the journey and knew that the leader, Mason, wanted to become a demon hunter, with the other four accompanying him.

As a lower-tier adventurer team, they had all learned some breathing techniques, but only Mason and Hermosa had condensed power seeds. Hermosa was younger and still had a chance to break through, but Mason, at over forty years old, had little chance of becoming a knight with fighting spirit.

Hanna was very interested in Charlotte, and it was she who chatted with him the most during the journey.

Charlotte knew why. After all, he had displayed superhuman abilities and was a "knight" with fighting spirit, making him a suitable match for Hanna.

Of course, another factor was that Charlotte was quite handsome.

Otherwise, he wouldn't have won the favor of Anne Brittany.

After all, the result of rescuing a damsel in distress is sometimes marriage, and sometimes it's a promise to repay in the next life…

The Giant Axe Adventurer Team found a spot in front of the large log cabin. Mason went to ask an acquaintance for information and returned to tell everyone, "The White Wolf won't be here tonight. He's still a day's journey away and won't return until tomorrow."

"Most people have found accommodation in the town. These people who couldn't find a place are the ones staying here. We'll probably have to camp out here tonight as well."

Except for Charlotte, the other five had experience living in the wild, and the empty spaces in town were much safer than the real wilderness. They quickly made a small fire, sat or lay down, and rested to relieve the fatigue from the day's journey.

Charlotte had no interest in becoming a demon hunter, and Hanna didn't think she had a chance either. When Hanna suggested that they find a place to have a drink, Charlotte readily agreed, not expecting that Hermosa would want to join them too.

Charlotte informed the team leader, Mason, and then left with the two women, much to the envy of the other two male teammates.

Although Charlotte had walked all day, he was still a third-level superhuman and was able to relieve most of his fatigue by using Blood Glory.

The two women, however, didn't have his abilities, and their exhaustion was evident on their faces.

Charlotte searched two hotels in Yorktown, but both were full. Too many adventurer teams had arrived in the past few days. Instead of looking for a third hotel, he bought a bunch of food and a large barrel of ale from the second hotel and returned to the large log cabin with the two women.

When Charlotte shared the food and ale with the team, any lingering resentment from the two male teammates quickly disappeared.

After returning, Hanna ate a little and then fell asleep on her backpack.

Hermosa was slightly better, staying up to chat for a while longer but soon also showing signs of exhaustion. Mason and the other two male teammates weren't in much better shape, so Charlotte suggested that he take the first watch, and they could rotate in the second half of the night.

Even in the town, someone needed to stand watch.
