Chapter 17 - On the clock

"Monsters everywhere are going berserk. Multiple fortresses and NSC's have already been trampled like this one. Not all of them by monsters by the way, some kind of cult group or something has apparently taken one of the fortresses too even though they will likely soon be overrun with Monsters as well. With the current developments, seeing the Monsters as the enemy and the invasions as a war, we are about 30 kilometers into enemy territory. We will not be saved, there is no one important enough in this college that cannot easily save himself after all. We are fucked."

...

Silence.

Nobody knew how to respond to that.

It was downright terrible news, the sergeant might as well have said they were dead.

But as everyone was slowly starting to succumb to despair, he continued talking.

"I know what all of you are thinking. You think your life is over. But this particular scenario puts me in a special place. It allows me to help everyone no matter what as you are all presumed to die anyway.

So this could be a chance for you all.

A chance to break through your predetermined potential established in this cursed low rank NSC. A chance to rise higher.

I will tell you all the secret to becoming a pseudo Elite.

I won't tell you about what it entails to really become one but with this information you all could gain your chance for survival.

Listen up."

Everyone was listening with wide eyes. The more the sergeant explained the better everyone's expression became and the more hope everyone gained for their survival.

Some even regained their ambition. Like Cor. When he heard the news of their undesirable situation he had pretty much given up. Just like the rest of these people he started talking feel like the struggle was useless. Why continue if you die anyway.

And after the recovery of his ambition. It grew. The more he heard the sergeant talk, the more realistic it seemed that he could make this work. He really could go past his potential!

Even Cor's goal started changing a bit.

Where at first he just wanted to be stronger and become an Elite, he now had another goal in mind.

The reason for this goal however, did not have much to do with the content of what the sergeant said, but more the implication of him telling everyone.

The implication that secrets of this world where many, and hidden. Secrets that could bring so much more to him than raw strength.

Secrets that he was itching to know. And he would now do everything to uncover them.

There was also someone else that regained her ambition.

Clara was thinking of her family. The family that wanted her to live up to their impossibly high standards or die trying.

She was sent away from home. But she would come back. She would show them that antagonizing her was not a smart move. She would lead the family or take revenge on then if she failed.

But both of them had a big obstacle to overcome first.

They would first have to survive.

So what did the sergeant say exactly.
