Judge William was the first to break the tense silence. "Gregory" he said, his voice authoritative, "allow me to introduce you to Brenda James."
I watched as Pa's eyes widened in recognition of Brenda's last name. The change in his demeanor was instant, his anger momentarily replaced by surprise. "Brenda James?" he asked, his tone slightly less sharp. "Are you related to Chairman Armand?"
Brenda stood up with a gracious smile, extending her hand in greeting. "Yes, I'm Armand's aunt. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Pa's reaction was immediate and cold. He didn't take her hand, his expression hardening again. The snub was clear, a silent dismissal that cut through the air.
Judge William, however, stepped forward, bridging the gap between them. He took Brenda's hand in his, shaking it warmly. "It's a pleasure to see you again Brenda James," he said with genuine politeness.
