Chapter 7 - Shadows and Steel

As they continued through the forest, Adrian's curiosity got the better of him. He couldn't help but glance over at Elara, her striking appearance still fresh in his mind. Her piercing red eyes had particularly caught his attention, and he found himself wondering about them.

"So, uh, Elara," Adrian began, trying to sound casual. "Your eyes… They're pretty unique. Are they naturally that color?"

Elara shot him a sideways glance, her expression unreadable. "Why do you ask?"

Adrian shrugged, feigning nonchalance. "I just think they're really cool. I've never seen anyone with eyes like yours before."

Elara didn't respond immediately, her gaze focused ahead. When she finally spoke, her tone was deliberately vague. "It's just how they are."

Adrian waited for her to elaborate, but when she didn't, he pressed on. "Are they, like, special or something? Do they have some kind of power?"

Elara sighed softly, clearly not thrilled about the line of questioning. "They're just eyes, Adrian. Nothing more."

He could tell she wasn't keen on sharing, but his curiosity wouldn't let up. "What about your hair? It's so blonde, it's almost white. Is that natural too?"

"Is this an interrogation?" Elara asked, raising an eyebrow. Though her words were sharp, there was a hint of amusement in her voice.

Adrian blushed, realizing he might have been a bit too eager. "No, no! I'm just… curious, that's all. You're different from anyone I've ever met, and I can't help but wonder."

Elara remained silent for a moment, her expression thoughtful. "Curiosity can be dangerous, you know."

Adrian frowned, sensing the cryptic nature of her response. "What do you mean?"

"Some things are better left alone," Elara said, her tone firm but not unkind. "Trust me on that."

Adrian nodded, deciding to drop the subject, but one more question lingered in his mind. "Alright, I'll stop asking about that. But, uh, why do you live out here in the woods? It seems kinda… lonely."

Elara glanced at him, a shadow passing over her face. "It's quiet out here," she said, her voice softer than before. "No one to bother me, and no one to bother."

Adrian's brow furrowed. "But don't you get lonely?"

Elara's lips curved into a small, almost wistful smile. "Sometimes. But it's safer this way. For everyone."

There was something in her tone that made Adrian's chest tighten, a hint of sadness that she tried to mask. He wanted to ask more, to understand why someone as strong as her would choose such an isolated life, but he held back.

A sudden tension filled the air. Elara's pace slowed, and her usually relaxed demeanor shifted, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the surroundings.

Adrian noticed the change immediately. "Elara? What's wrong?"

Elara held up a hand, signaling him to stop. "Wait," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her gaze darted around, searching for something unseen. "I sense something."

Adrian felt a chill run down his spine, and he instinctively gripped the map tighter. "What do you mean? What's out there?"

Before she could answer, Elara's eyes widened in alarm. "Jump back! Now!"

Without thinking, Adrian obeyed, leaping backward just as a blinding beam of light shot through the air, striking the ground where they had stood moments before. The impact sent a shockwave through the forest, the earth exploding in a burst of light and debris.

Adrian hit the ground hard, the force of the explosion ringing in his ears. He scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding in his chest as he tried to make sense of what had just happened.

"Elara!" he shouted, looking around frantically for her.

She was already on her feet, her daggers drawn, her expression tense. "Stay close to me," she ordered, her voice sharp with urgency. "Whatever that was, it's not done yet."

"They're not here by accident," she muttered under her breath, her grip tightening on her daggers.

"What do you mean?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking slightly. He could still feel the reverberation of the blast in his bones.

Elara turned to him, her usual calm demeanor replaced by a rare seriousness. "Adrian, listen to me. I think they're after me."

Adrian's eyes widened. "What? Why would anyone be after you?"

"There's no time to explain," she said quickly, glancing around the forest as if expecting another attack at any moment. "You need to go, now. Dawndelle is close, just a bit further down this path. You should be safe there."

"But what about you?" Adrian protested, not liking the idea of leaving her behind. "I can't just—"

"You have to," Elara interrupted, her tone leaving no room for argument. "If they're after me, you're in danger just by being here. I'll deal with this, but you need to get to safety."

Adrian hesitated, torn between following her instructions and staying to help. But the urgency in her eyes convinced him.

"Go, Adrian," Elara urged, her voice softer but firm. "I'll find yo-"

Before she could finish, a dark figure dropped from the trees above, landing between them with a soft thud. The figure straightened, their presence immediately commanding attention. "You're not going anywhere," they said, their voice cold and calm.

Adrian froze, his heart skipping a beat. The newcomer moved with an unnerving grace, their movements smooth and precise. As they reached up and removed their mask, Adrian's breath caught in his throat. The person standing before them had the same piercing red eyes as Elara, and their hair was an almost unnatural shade of white-blond, glinting in the dim light filtering through the trees.

Elara's eyes widened in recognition, a mix of emotions flickering across her face—surprise, anger, and something else Adrian couldn't quite place. "You…" she breathed, her voice laced with a tension he hadn't heard before.

The person smirked, their expression sharp and calculating.

Adrian watched the exchange in confusion, his mind racing. Whoever this was, they were connected to Elara—and clearly not in a good way. He had so many questions, but right now, he knew he had to follow Elara's lead.

"Elara, who is this?" Adrian asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

The figure's smirk faltered as they took a closer look at Elara, their eyes narrowing in confusion. "Wait… You look—" He shook his head as if dismissing the thought. "Doesn't matter. I'm not here for you."

He turned his piercing gaze back to Adrian, and the air seemed to thicken with tension. "It's the boy I'm after. But since you've decided to play hero, Elara, I'll turn you in too. Might as well collect a bonus for your head."

Adrian felt a cold sweat break out across his skin. "After me? But why?"

The figure ignored his question, taking a step closer. "Orders are orders. It doesn't matter why. But if you come quietly, I might let her live."

Elara moved swiftly, placing herself protectively in front of Adrian, her daggers gleaming in the light. "Over my dead body."

The man chuckled darkly, clearly unbothered by the threat. "That can be arranged. But let's make this quick, shall we? I've got other business to attend to."

Adrian's heart raced as he realized the gravity of the situation. Whoever this person was, they weren't just after Elara—they were after him. But why? He didn't have time to think, as Elara's stance made it clear she wasn't about to let him be taken without a fight.

The tension snapped like a taut wire, and suddenly the forest erupted into chaos.

Elara moved first, her twin daggers flashing as she lunged at the stranger with lightning speed. The man reacted just as quickly, drawing a sleek, curved blade from his side and parrying her attack with a sharp clang of metal. Sparks flew as their weapons collided, the force of the impact reverberating through the air.

Adrian stumbled back, his mind racing to keep up with the blur of movement before him. Elara was relentless, her strikes precise and fierce, each one aimed with deadly intent. But the stranger was no less skilled, his every move calculated, his blade weaving through the air like a deadly dance.

"Stay back, Adrian!" Elara shouted, her voice strained as she deflected a series of rapid strikes.

Adrian watched, his heart pounding in his chest, as Elara twisted her body, using her agility to dodge a sweeping strike that would have cut her down. She retaliated with a low slash aimed at the man's legs, but he jumped back effortlessly, his eyes gleaming with a cold determination.

"You're fast," he admitted, a twisted smile on his face. "But not fast enough."

With a sudden burst of speed, the man closed the distance between them, forcing Elara on the defensive. His blade was a blur, slashing and thrusting in a relentless barrage that had her backpedaling, barely able to keep up. The forest floor was torn up beneath their feet as they moved, each strike sending shockwaves through the ground.

Elara gritted her teeth, her breath coming in sharp gasps. She was fast, but the stranger was stronger, each of his attacks heavier than the last. She spun around, trying to gain the upper hand with a swift backhanded strike, but he caught her wrist mid-swing, twisting it with a brutal force that made her cry out in pain.

Adrian's eyes widened in horror as he saw Elara falter. He couldn't just stand there. Without thinking, he grabbed a fallen branch and charged forward, swinging it with all his might at the man's head.

The stranger saw him coming out of the corner of his eye and easily sidestepped the attack, releasing Elara and delivering a swift kick to Adrian's stomach that sent him sprawling to the ground.

"Pathetic," the man sneered, raising his blade to strike.

But in that split second, Elara was on him again, her dagger slicing through the air toward his exposed side. He barely managed to twist away, the blade grazing his ribs and drawing blood. He hissed in pain, his eyes narrowing with fury.

"You'll pay for that," he snarled, swinging his sword in a wide arc.

Elara ducked just in time, the blade whistling inches above her head. She retaliated with a flurry of quick jabs, each one aimed to keep him off balance. The man blocked most of them, but one found its mark, cutting a deep gash across his forearm.

The stranger grimaced, his face twisted in anger, but he didn't retreat. Instead, he pressed forward, his attacks becoming even more ferocious, each strike aimed to kill. Elara was forced to give ground, her movements growing more desperate as she struggled to keep up with his relentless assault.

"Enough of this," he growled, knocking one of her daggers aside and slamming the hilt of his sword into her shoulder, sending her crashing to the ground.

Adrian scrambled to his feet, his body aching from the earlier blow. He couldn't let it end like this. He had to do something, anything, to help. But as he looked around, all he could see was the fight spiraling out of control, the man looming over Elara, ready to deliver the final blow.

"You should have stayed in the shadows where you belong, Elara," he hissed, his voice dripping with contempt. "Now, you'll pay the price for crossing me."

His eyes gleamed with a cold, ruthless determination as he raised his sword, ready to bring it down on her with lethal force.

As the man's blade hung in the air, poised to strike, time seemed to stretch and distort. The furious beating of Adrian's heart slowed, each thud echoing in his ears like a distant drum. The world around him blurred, the edges of his vision dimming as if reality itself was unraveling.

In that eerie silence, a familiar, chilling voice echoed in Adrian's mind, cutting through the fog of fear.

"You're not just a bystander, Adrian. Remember who you are."

It was the man from the void—the one who had sent him into this world. His voice was calm, almost detached, but it resonated with an authority that made Adrian's blood run cold.

"This is your moment. Will you let them die? Or will you take control of your fate?"

The words reverberated in his skull, shaking him to his core. The scene before him, the man's blade descending toward Elara, froze in place. Everything around him hung in a suspended reality, and in that split second, Adrian felt a surge of something deep within him—power, or perhaps something even more primal.

"Act, Adrian. Or this world will swallow you whole."

Adrian's heart pounded in his chest, the echo of the void's voice still ringing in his ears. His instincts screamed at him to act, to do something—anything—to stop what was about to happen. Without fully understanding why, he thrust his hand out toward the man, a desperate plea for the world to heed his call.

In that instant, something dark and powerful stirred within him. From his outstretched hand, tendrils of black energy surged forth, twisting and coiling like living shadows. The air crackled with a sinister energy, and the temperature around him dropped as if the warmth of the day had been drained away.

The black magic hurtled toward the man, faster than a breath, and in the blink of an eye, it collided with his descending blade. The moment the dark energy touched the steel, the sword began to disintegrate, crumbling into dust as if consumed by an unseen force. The man's eyes widened in shock, his confident smirk replaced with sheer disbelief.

He stumbled back, staring at the remnants of his weapon in horror. The once-lethal blade had been reduced to nothing more than a handful of blackened ash, sifting through his fingers. Adrian's hand trembled, still glowing with the remnants of the dark magic, his breath shallow as he tried to comprehend what he had just done.

Adrian stumbled backward, a searing pain shooting up his arm. The dark energy had left a burning sensation on his hand, as though it had been scorched by an unseen flame. He gasped, clutching his wrist with his other hand as the pain intensified, radiating through his fingers and up his arm.

The force of the backlash sent him sprawling to the ground, his body wracked with agony. He tried to steady his breathing, his face contorted in pain, the once-empowering surge of magic now feeling like a cruel torment. His hand felt as though it was on fire, each pulse of pain a reminder of the power he had unwittingly unleashed.

The man, now disarmed and stunned, watched Adrian with a mix of shock and fury. His gaze flickered between the wreckage of his blade and Adrian's pained form.

As the man's blade shattered into dust, his eyes widened with shock. But the moment was brief. Anger replaced his surprise, his face contorting into a snarl. His eyes turned a furious bloodshot red, and his once-human features twisted, revealing sharp, elongated fangs that glinted in the dim light.

"No more games," he growled, his voice low and menacing. "You're mine now."

With a sudden burst of speed, the man lunged toward Adrian, his fangs bared and his eyes locked onto his target. The rage in his gaze was palpable, a terrifying mix of fury and hunger.

Elara, seeing the man's transformation and realizing the danger, quickly moved to shield Adrian. She stepped between them, her daggers drawn and her stance defensive. "Not so fast!" she shouted, her voice firm and determined.

The man's bloodshot eyes flickered with a dangerous glint as he ignored Elara and focused solely on Adrian. "You think you can interfere? You're no match for me."

Adrian, still wracked with pain from the backlash of his own magic, tried to scramble away. His hand throbbed with a burning intensity, but his instincts screamed at him to move, to escape this new threat.

Elara met the man's charge with a flurry of swift, precise strikes, her daggers slashing through the air with deadly accuracy. The man, agile and relentless, parried her attacks with a savage grace, his fangs snapping in frustration as he tried to get past her.

The man's eyes blazed with a feral intensity, the rage and hunger in his gaze now more pronounced. Despite Elara's best efforts to hold him off, he fought through her relentless attacks with a brutal, unyielding strength. His fangs glinted menacingly as he parried her strikes, his movements a blend of predatory grace and sheer power.

With a powerful shove, the man pushed Elara aside, sending her sprawling to the forest floor. She tried to recover quickly, but the man was already past her, closing in on Adrian.

Adrian's heart pounded as he turned to see the man barreling toward him. Desperation surged through him, but the pain in his hand and his lingering disorientation made it impossible to react in time. The man reached out with a clawed hand, grabbing Adrian by the collar with a vice-like grip.

"No!" Adrian shouted, struggling against the man's hold.

The man's eyes were cold and unyielding as he yanked Adrian off his feet. "You're coming with me," he said, his voice a guttural growl.

Elara, still shaken but determined, scrambled to her feet and tried to intervene, but she was too far away. "Stop!" she yelled, her voice breaking with urgency. "Let him go!"

But the man was already moving, his grip on Adrian unrelenting as he dragged him through the underbrush. Adrian's attempts to break free were futile, his body burning with the pain of his earlier magic and the sheer force of the man's grip. The forest seemed to close in around them, the path to Dawndelle growing distant and blurred.

Adrian's mind raced, trying to think of a way to escape, but the fear and pain clouded his thoughts. He could see the frustration and determination in Elara's eyes as she tried to catch up, but the man's speed and strength made it clear that she wouldn't be able to reach them in time.

Due to the exhaustion from the strange attack he let out, and the sheer amount of adrenaline that was pumping through his veins, he passed out, holding his hand out to Elara like he did to his mother on the day he was born.
