Chapter 185 - Ghosts of the Past

The air in Aurelia felt heavy with the weight of what was left behind.

Ryker and Kaid stood at the edge of a ruined city, its once towering spires reduced to crumbling remains, now little more than silent monuments to a past they both knew too well.

Aurelia was no longer the land they had abandoned.

Now it was a haunting reminder of what had been lost, and what they had failed to protect.

"Do you think... any of them survived?" Kaid asked quietly, his gaze locked on the broken horizon.

Ryker, silent for a moment, inhaled deeply, his expression hardening.

"I don't know. But we're about to find out."

As they ventured deeper into the decaying streets, the echoes of their past whispered through the ruins.

Ryker's mind raced with memories—of battles fought, friends lost, and the weight of responsibility that had once rested on his shoulders as Aurelia's protector.

But Aurelia had changed.

The vibrant magic that once flowed through the land was now darkened, tainted by an unseen force.

Kaid's eyes darted warily across their surroundings, his hand instinctively tightening around the hilt of his blade.

"This place feels... off. Different."

"Everything's different now," Ryker responded.

"The land, the people—if there are any left. Aurelia's magic has been twisted. It's not like it was before."

Suddenly, the sound of movement interrupted the quiet. Both Ryker and Kaid turned in unison, drawing their weapons as a group of shadowy figures emerged from the fog-drenched streets.

These figures were not the enemies they had fought before.

They were spectral, almost ethereal, their forms flickering as if caught between two planes of existence.

"Ghosts?" Kaid muttered under his breath, his body tensing as he prepared for a fight.

"Not quite," Ryker replied, his voice low.

"These are something else. Leftovers of the magic that once ruled here... twisted into something dark."

The figures moved forward with increasing speed, their faces obscured by mist, but their intentions were clear.

Ryker and Kaid wasted no time, launching into the fray with precision.

Kaid struck first, his blade slicing through one of the specters with ease.

But instead of dissipating, the entity reformed, its body reassembling as if nothing had happened.

"Damn it," Kaid cursed. "They're not going down!"

Ryker raised his hand, channeling his bond with Shadowfang.

The wolf-leopard hybrid appeared from the shadows, lunging at the specters with raw, untamed energy.

Unlike Kaid's physical attacks, Shadowfang's ethereal form seemed to affect the ghosts, dispersing them with each swipe of its claws.

"They're vulnerable to Cypher energy," Ryker noted, his voice calm amidst the chaos.

"Normal weapons won't work."

Kaid nodded, quickly adjusting his strategy.

He summoned his own Cypher energy, a dark blue aura enveloping his sword as he charged at the remaining enemies.

This time, his strikes hit with force, causing the specters to dissipate into wisps of smoke.

For a moment, silence returned to the ruins.

But Ryker knew better than to believe it was over.

The land itself had become a battlefield, and whatever malevolent force had tainted Aurelia would not let them leave so easily.

"We're being watched," Ryker said, scanning the horizon.

He could feel it—a presence lurking just beyond sight, observing their every move.

Kaid sheathed his blade, wiping the sweat from his brow.

"Any idea who it is?"

Ryker's gaze sharpened.

"No. But they're not friendly. And I'm guessing this was just the beginning."

As if in response, the ground beneath them began to tremble.

From the distance, a new group of enemies emerged—this time, they were not specters, but armored figures wielding strange, arcane weapons.

Their armor glowed with dark, pulsating energy, and their eyes burned with an unnatural light.

"Who the hell are they?" Kaid asked, raising his sword once more.

Ryker narrowed his eyes.

"No idea. But they're not from the Aurelia we knew."

The armored figures moved with an eerie synchronization, their steps measured and deliberate as they closed the distance.

Ryker could feel the dark energy radiating off them, stronger than anything they had encountered before.

"Get ready," Ryker warned. "This is going to get ugly."

The battle erupted once again, the clash of steel ringing through the streets as Ryker and Kaid fought side by side.

Despite their skill, the enemies were relentless, their attacks precise and unyielding.

Ryker could feel the weight of every blow, the energy in the air thick with malevolence.

"They're being controlled," Ryker said between strikes, his voice strained but steady.

"Something's guiding them."

Kaid grunted in response, parrying a blow from one of the armored soldiers.

"Any ideas on how to stop them?"

"Just one," Ryker replied.

He closed his eyes for a brief moment, summoning the full power of his bond with Shadowfang.

The creature responded instantly, its form expanding, its energy swirling around Ryker like a protective shield.

With a roar, Ryker unleashed a wave of Cypher energy, the force of it knocking the armored figures back.

For a brief moment, the dark energy that surrounded them flickered, and in that instant, Ryker and Kaid struck with all their might.

One by one, the enemies fell, their bodies crumpling to the ground as the dark energy dissipated.

As the last figure fell, the tremors in the earth subsided, leaving only silence in their wake.

Ryker and Kaid stood amidst the aftermath, their breaths heavy, their weapons still drawn.

But the battle was over—for now.

"We need answers," Kaid said, wiping the blood from his sword.

"Whoever's behind this... they're not going to stop."

Ryker nodded, his expression grim.

"We'll find them. And we'll make them pay for what they've done to Aurelia."

As they began to move forward, Ryker couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.

The ghosts of their past had come back to haunt them, and this time, they wouldn't rest until Aurelia was reclaimed—or destroyed.
