Chapter 114 - Call to Defend

The sky above Valcaria darkened as the rift, once a small and unstable tear in reality, now expanded ominously.

Strange lights flickered within its depths, casting long shadows across the landscape.

What was once a distant threat had transformed into a gaping maw, and from within, monstrous creatures began to pour out.

Ryker stood on the city's main wall, surveying the chaos that was rapidly unfolding.

Below him, soldiers scrambled into formation, their newly upgraded mecha armors humming with power.

Citizens, though not panicking, moved quickly to evacuate the outer sectors, understanding the severity of the situation.

"It's getting worse," Zara said, her voice firm as she joined Ryker on the wall.

Her eyes were locked on the rift, watching as a winged beast emerged, its leathery wings casting a shadow over the farmlands.

"This is beyond what we expected," Ryker finished, feeling the weight of responsibility pressing down on him.

The rift was no longer just a distant threat; it was at their doorstep, and Valcaria's defenses would be tested like never before.

The first wave of creatures slammed into the outskirts of the city, and the clash of metal and roars filled the air.

Soldiers in their mecha armors engaged the invaders with precision, their movements swift and lethal.

Energy weapons lit up the battlefield, cutting through the beasts with sharp bursts of power.

But for every creature they struck down, more emerged from the rift, crawling or flying into the city's perimeter.

"Ryker, the western gate is under heavy attack," Elara's voice crackled through the comms, tense but composed.

"We need reinforcements now."

Ryker turned to Kaid, who was already gearing up, his eyes locked with Ryker's in silent understanding.

"I'll take a squad to the west," Kaid said, his voice steady despite the chaos. "We'll hold them off."

"Go," Ryker nodded, knowing Kaid would handle it. He turned to Zara, his mind racing.

"We need to push them back before they reach the heart of the city. If the rift continues to widen, this is only the beginning."

Zara tightened her grip on her blades.

"We can't let this get any worse. We'll hold the line here."

Just as Ryker was about to move, a familiar voice broke through the comms.

"Ryker," Kiera's cold, commanding tone came through, her presence unmistakable even through the static.

"I'm bringing my forces to the northern sector. You handle the south."

Ryker's jaw tightened as he heard her voice.

Kiera had been distant ever since their uneasy alliance, her cold demeanor unshaken by their recent agreements.

But now, with the threat of the rift spilling over, she had chosen to act.

It wasn't out of loyalty; he knew that—she acted out of necessity. Still, the tension between them had to be pushed aside for now.

"Kiera," Ryker responded, his voice measured.

"Let's make sure our people survive this. We can deal with everything else later."

"Agreed," she replied curtly before the comms cut off.

With Kiera handling the north, Ryker rallied his forces.

The streets of Valcaria were filled with the sound of boots hitting stone and the hum of energy weapons powering up.

The survivors had fought through countless battles to make it this far, but this time, it wasn't just about their survival—it was about protecting everything they had built.

"Soldiers, take formation!" one of the captains shouted, his voice booming over the noise.

"Hold your ground!"

Ryker descended from the wall, his mecha armor gleaming as he joined the front lines.

The creatures pouring from the rift were relentless—beasts of all shapes and sizes, their twisted forms barely recognizable.

Some crawled on all fours with jagged claws, while others flew overhead, shrieking as they swooped down toward the soldiers.

"Fire at will!" Ryker commanded, raising his arm.

A beam of energy shot out from his gauntlet, striking one of the larger creatures in the chest.

It let out a deafening roar before crumpling to the ground.

"Keep firing! Don't let up!" a soldier shouted beside him, sweat dripping down his brow.

"We can't let them break through!"

The battle was fierce, but the survivors were holding their own.

The mecha armors, designed for situations like this, gave the soldiers enhanced strength and speed, allowing them to counter the horde of creatures with brutal efficiency.

But the rift showed no sign of closing, and Ryker knew they couldn't keep this up forever.

From the south, a group of guards rushed forward, their armor clinking with each step.

"We've got them pinned down near the gates, sir!" one of them shouted as he joined Ryker's side, his eyes wide but determined.

"But there are too many!"

"Hold the line!" Ryker yelled back, not letting doubt creep into his voice.

"We push them back now, or we lose everything!"

He scanned the faces of his troops, each one reflecting the same mix of fear and determination.

"Listen up, everyone! This is the home we're fighting for! This isn't just another battle—this is for Valcaria! We've overcome so much to build this place, and we will not let it fall today!"

His words ignited a spark of resolve among the soldiers, their shoulders straightening as they nodded in agreement.

"For Valcaria!" they shouted in unison.

"Remember what we've trained for!" Ryker continued, his voice rising above the chaos.

"We are the Vanguard Sentinels, the protectors of this kingdom! We've faced the darkness before, and we've always emerged stronger. Together, we can push them back! Together, we will hold our ground!"

As he spoke, the soldiers began to rally, their energy weapons blazing with renewed vigor.

Ryker felt a surge of pride for his team; they were not just fighting for survival but for their future.

"Elara," Ryker called through the comms, "what's the status of the rift's energy signature?"

"It's still destabilizing," Elara responded, her voice filled with urgency.

"It's feeding off the energy in this area. If we don't contain it soon, the entire region could be overrun."

Ryker clenched his fists.

They were running out of time.

"We need a way to close it," he muttered to himself, watching as more creatures surged from the rift's widening maw.

Suddenly, a shrill screech cut through the battlefield, louder and more piercing than anything they had heard before.

Ryker's gaze snapped to the horizon, where the form of an enormous, shadowed creature was emerging from the rift.

Its body was covered in storm-like scales, crackling with energy.

"Ryker," Elara's voice came through the comms again, this time filled with dread.

"There's something massive coming through."

Ryker's stomach dropped. Whatever was coming next wasn't just another wave of creatures—it was something far worse.

"Kiera," Ryker called out over the comms, urgency creeping into his voice.

"We've got something big coming through. Get your forces ready."

Her voice, as cold as ever, responded without hesitation.

"I'm already in position."

As Ryker prepared to face this new threat, he couldn't shake the feeling that this battle was only the beginning.

The rift was far from done with them, and as he stared into the dark vortex, he knew they were about to face a creature unlike any they had encountered before.

But there was no time for fear.

With his team by his side, and Kiera's forces holding the north, Ryker steeled himself for what was to come.

"Get ready," he muttered under his breath, eyes locked on the approaching storm.

The battle had only just begun.

And their greatest challenge was about to emerge.
