Chapter 37 - New Discovery

Mark Thomas sat in his father's study, surrounded by the familiar scent of old books and leather. He had always loved spending time in this room, feeling the weight of his family's history and legacy. But today, he was on a mission.

As he searched for any clues that might lead him to the truth about his father's involvement in the yacht attack, his eyes landed on a familiar frame on the wall. It was an old portrait of his ancestors, one that had been passed down through generations.

But as he approached the frame, he noticed something strange. The frame seemed slightly askew, as if it had been recently moved. Mark's curiosity piqued, he pushed the frame back, revealing a hidden compartment behind it.

Inside, he found a document, yellowed with age, detailing a list of properties owned by his father. Mark's eyes widened as he scanned the list, his mind racing with the implications.

There were properties he knew about, like the family estate and the vacation home in the Hamptons. But there were others he had never heard of, scattered across the globe. A private island in the Caribbean, a villa in Tuscany, a high-rise in Hong Kong...

Mark's thoughts swirled with questions. Why had his father kept these properties a secret? And what did they have to do with the attack on his yacht? He felt like he was unraveling a thread that would lead him down a dangerous path, but he couldn't stop now. He had to know the truth.

As Mark continued to scan the document, his eyes landed on one property that made his heart skip a beat. A warehouse in the waterfront district, owned by a shell company with a name that seemed eerily familiar.

"Jefferson Holdings," Mark whispered to himself, his mind racing with connections. Larry Johnson, Diana's father, had been acting suspiciously, and now Mark had found a property linked to him.

He felt a surge of adrenaline as he realized the potential implications. Was this warehouse connected to the attack on his yacht? And what else was his father hiding?

Mark's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the study door opening. He quickly hid the document and turned to face the intruder, his heart pounding in his chest.

It was Diana, a look of concern etched on her face. "Mark, I've been looking all over for you. What are you doing in here?"

Mark hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something about Diana's expression told him she was ready for the truth. "I found something," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "A document with a list of properties owned by my father. And one of them is linked to your father.

Mark felt a mix of emotions as he revealed the truth to Diana. He was anxious about how she would react, worried that she would deny it or worse, turn against him. But at the same time, he felt a sense of relief, finally sharing the burden of his discovery with someone he trusted.

As he looked into Diana's eyes, he saw a flash of surprise, followed by a deep concern. She seemed to be processing the information, her mind racing with the implications.

Mark felt a pang of guilt, knowing that he was potentially dragging Diana into a dangerous game. But he also felt a sense of determination, knowing that he needed her help to uncover the truth.

As they stood there, the tension between them was palpable. Mark felt like he was holding his breath, waiting for Diana to respond, to say something, anything.

Finally, she spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "What does it mean?" she asked, her eyes locked on Mark's.

Mark hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something about Diana's expression told him to trust her. I think our fathers are involved in something big," he said, his voice low and serious. "Something that could put us all in danger.

Jefferson, Diana's father, stepped off the private plane in Jackson, Mississippi, the humid air enveloping him like a warm blanket. He had arrived to finalize the sale of one of his properties, a sprawling estate in the countryside.

As he made his way to the meeting, Jefferson's mind wandered to the events unfolding back home. His daughter Diana was getting close to the truth, and he knew it was only a matter of time before she discovered the full extent of his dealings with Mark's father.

But Jefferson had a plan. He would sell this property, and the others, to fund his next move. He would distance himself from the trail of evidence, and Diana would be left with nothing but dead ends.

The meeting was brief, the buyer eager to finalize the purchase. Jefferson smiled, pocketing the check, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. This was it, the beginning of his exit strategy.

As he flew back to his home state, Jefferson's thoughts turned to Mark's father, his partner in this venture. They had come a long way, and now it was time to reap the rewards.

But little did Jefferson know, Mark and Diana were closing in, their investigation leading them down a path that would expose the truth, and put them directly in the crosshairs of Jefferson and Mark's father's sinister plans.

Larry Johnson, Jefferson's partner in crime, sat in his dimly lit study, surrounded by the trappings of his ill-gotten wealth. He smiled to himself as he counted the stacks of cash in his safe, the fruits of their labor.

The sound of rustling bills and clinking coins filled the air as he tallied up the loot. He whistled a tune, feeling like a kid on Christmas morning.

As he counted, Larry's mind wandered to the various schemes they had pulled off. The real estate scams, the embezzlement, the bribery... it had all paid off handsomely.

He chuckled to himself, thinking about how they had fooled everyone. Mark and Diana, those nosy kids, thought they were getting close to the truth, but they had no idea.

Larry's eyes gleamed with greed as he finished counting. He had never felt so rich, so powerful. He was the master of his own destiny, and no one could touch him.

But, as he closed the safe and leaned back in his chair, a faint sense of unease crept in. What if Mark and Diana did discover the truth? What if they exposed him and Jefferson?

Larry's smile faltered, and he shook his head. No, he wouldn't let that happen. He would do whatever it took to keep their secrets safe, to keep their empire intact.

The sound of his own laughter echoed in the room, a cold, mirthless sound.

Larry Johnson's smile faded, replaced by a scowl as he thought about Thomas Tower, the one thing he coveted but couldn't have. He paused, his mind consumed by anger and resentment.

Why did Mark's father get to be the leader of Serpent, the prestigious organization that held the keys to power and influence? Why did he get to own Thomas Tower, the iconic building that symbolized success and dominance?

Larry's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched in frustration. He had done everything to get ahead, to be the best, but somehow, Mark's father always seemed to be one step ahead.

He thought about all the times he had been overlooked, underappreciated, and undervalued. He thought about all the times he had to play second fiddle to Mark's father, to smile and nod and agree, even when he seethed with anger and resentment.

Larry's anger boiled over, his face red with rage. He slammed his fist on the desk, making the room shake. Why couldn't he be the one in control? Why couldn't he be the leader of Serpent?

The sound of his own ragged breathing filled the room as he struggled to calm down. He knew he couldn't let his emotions get the better of him. He had to keep his cool, to keep his eyes on the prize.

But the anger and resentment lingered, simmering just below the surface, waiting to boil over again. Larry's ambition and desire for power had become an all-consuming fire, driving him to do

whatever it took to get what he wanted.
