As I got up from the chair after a rather hearty breakfast, I decided it was time the table did it's job differently.
"Kenji, move aside."
I tried to pull a table leg to see if the joint was weak. When that was unsuccessful, I grabbed the knife out of my pocket, and handed it to the boy. "Cut through and yank the leg of the table. We'll use this as our weapon in case we have to do some killing."
Kenji, in a shock of elation, replied, "O- Ok.", as his eyes widened. After finally having the time to process the trauma, I sat in the master bedroom. My parents had died and their zombies were now locked in a room.
'Would they still feel the pain of hunger? Would it not be humane to kill them?'
As these thoughts revolved in my head, I began thinking of opening the room. This silence in the house killed me.
I cleaned the tears dripping down my eyes and sighed.
30 minutes later, it was time. I strapped the magazine around my arm once again, and dawned the jacket. With the table leg in my hand, I was ready.
"Alright. So I want you to open the door at the right moment and close it back. Once I get back here, I want you to open the door as quickly as possible."
Kenji replied, "B- But shouldn't I- I- go with you?"
"No. There's no need. If I yell, try to come for me. Get the kitchen knife, and aim for the head. Their skull seems to have become softer with the mutation. Plus, if you come with me now, you might hesitate in killing your- what was your mother."
Kenji nodded.
"Now open the door slowly."
The 803 zombie was nowhere to be seen. As I silently stepped out, the corridor was empty. Grasping the table leg tighter, I looked left and right as I headed to 802.
As soon as I entered, I closed the door swiftly behind me. There is a chance that the 803 zombie might make it's way in with all the noise about to happen.
Making my way through the hall, I saw the mother aimlessly staring into the empty room ahead. I made my way to quickly swing the wood. But in the nick of time, she noticed my scent and turned with a screech, "RAAWGR!!"
Blood dripping from her red eyes and green, pumped nerves. With the very next step she took, I bashed her brains on the floor.
Just as I thought it was over, with a second wind, the mother was about to bite into my pants. Another swing of adrenaline, and there was a pool of blood.
If I hadn't acted in time, I would've turned. Though, this wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.
With the blood soaked wood in my hands, I knocked on the closed room. "Oi! The area's safe! Your brother told me about ya. You can get out now."
As the door creaked open, she stared at me for a bit. When she knew the room was secure, she ran into my arms, squeezing my lungs to death.
This moment was truly... sensational. She was about my age, and I had seen her a couple times in the lift. But feeling her in my arms was something else.
In the sweetest voice imaginable, she spoke, "Where is my brother? Where is Kenji? Is he safe??"
Assuring her of his safety, I said, "He's fine. He's in 801. We can get back there now."
While we were heading back to the living room, I stopped, "But first- we have to gather rations. Get as much food as you can carry, and I'll guide you safely to the next apartment."
"But- would be right to mix our things? Won't Kenji be coming here?"
In a look of disappointment, I spoke, "Our things? MY THINGS. There's no law outside this room. You're lucky you even came across me. Now do as I say, and maybe you and your brother'll be alive after all this. I leave the rest to you."
In a fit of rage, she retorted, "Your things?! What makes you think you're even in control? This place is safe now as is."
Irritated, I handed over the wooden leg to her. "Fine! You can do the guarding, I'll gather some of your food and leave. Then your brother can find his way back here."
"No, I'll come with you, stay for a few days, and make my way back with my brother later."
I absolutely hated making this journey. I would've just left her there, but I had two big reasons to like her. Her big brown eyes, her pale face and her lean body were quite- *Uhm.* I'm getting carried away.
"Sure. You're welcome."
Opening the door, I ran through the corridor and knocked on 801. Kenji saw me through the peephole and let us in. Thankfully, the 803 zombie was still nowhere to be seen.
Just as the door closed and we let us in, I felt a sudden sharp pain at the back of my head. The girl had swung the wooden leg on my head.
"AOI! WHAT- WHAT DID YOU DO?!" I could hear Kenji's voice as I was falling. On the ground before I blacked out, I saw her face and heard her say, "We'll run out of food. We have to use his-"
"Shit." A last word, before the blackout.
