Chapter 3 - Completion

Two months later, in Kaz' laboratory.

Messy drawings were scattered on the floor, and parts large and small were piled high on the workbench.

A hollow mechanical arm lay quietly on the frame, while Kaz was in full swing, working on it,

Soon, Kaz plugged in the device, and it slowly began to hum to life. Kaz could not for the life of him, recreate the energy source Bucky's arm used, but he did manage to create high capacity, small batteries, that could be charged.

Well, if you could consider soda can sized batteries small, but they could store enough energy to power a house for a few days.

The arm itself was a shell, being made from scrap metal and the highest quality extra parts Kaz could find, it wasn't the more beautiful thing out there, but it got the job done. Sadly, Kaz could not figure out zero latency, while making the whole arm external, so it does require him to modify his body just a bit, for it to access his nerves.

But he doesn't mind, he planned to internally enhance his body with mechanics soon regardless, he still planned for the arm to be detachable, until he could make a more formatting version with camouflage.

Kaz took a deep breath, placing his left arm on a freshly sterilized table. He only had a few hours to get this done before morning.

Kaz knew this was dangerous, one wrong move and he permanently loses his left arm. But he had prepared.

With a steady hand, Kaz made the first incision, the scalpel slicing cleanly through his skin. Blood welled up around the cut, but he quickly staunched it with gauze. He worked methodically, cutting deeper until the muscle and bone were exposed. The pain was intense, even with the numbing agents.

Next came the bone saw. The sound of it slicing through bone was sickening and gross. The towel Kaz had put in his mouth to suppress his screams already torn all the way through, his teeth grinding on themselves.

He had to remove his own elbow to make room for artificial elbow and power housing part he had designed. The process was slow and excruciating, but finally, the bone was cut and ready.

Now, he was the point of no return. If he failed here, he no longer has a arm. He had sawed the bone and the nerves, the only thing connecting the arm to his body was flesh and skin.

Kaz reached for the part that would interface with his nervous system. It was a small, intricate device, designed to latch onto the largest cluster of nerves in his arm. With precision, he placed it in the gap where the bone had been, securing it in place with tiny screws and clamps. He could feel the cold metal against his raw flesh, a strange sensation that made him shiver.

One by one, he connected the hair thin wires with his nerves, each connection made him shiver, and grind his teeth to dust in pain. Soon, feeling to his left arm returned. He then installed ports, each a different shape meant to transfer different information to the mechanical arm.

Two on the bicep, and 1 on the shoulder and one near his spinal cord. Having struggled to get it there.

Each port was connected to a metal plate covering, appearing above his skin. He then quickly stitched up his arm, sterilized the plate, and then the worst part was about to start. He heated the metal coverings, and then forced it onto his arm. Fusing the flesh and metal and causing him to violently shake in place.

Soon, it was over, and his pale skin was flushed red and he was breathing heavily. After letting it cool, he took out some screws, and screwed the plate in with the connectors on the inside of his arm, finishing the internal modifications.

With the way he had done the modifications, they were near permanent. He could only remove them when he had the tech to completely replace his arm with a fully mechanical one.

Kaz picked up the actual mechanical shell, and placed it onto his left arm like a glove, going from his finger tips, up to his shoulder and back like a pauldron. All of the connections slotted in. He then picked up one of the batteries, and slotted it into the hole in the elbow, bringing the device to life. Surging it with power and causing it to light up.

He closed the opening and stretched his arm a bit.

With the arm fully equip, his left arm was slight longer than his right. With mechanical parts designed to move and protrude after every high powered punch, meant to dissipate force to keep the device intact, and many, many failsafe's in place to avoid frying his own nervous system. The arm was nearly perfect.

Kaz speculated, with all the high power servos and strategic placement of small hydraulics, he could punch around as hard as half power Bucky.

After all, Bucky has been transformed by serum. The tiny high-compression battery in his robotic arm only provides auxiliary power. The real power source is Bucky's own power.

Kaz waved his right arm a few times, and the weight of the power arm was just right.

After pulling out the two-centimeter-thick steel plate that had been prepared, Leo turned on the power of the power arm, and smashed the steel plate into a hole with one punch.

The power also met expectations.

Kaz looked at the light powered arm on his right arm with a relieved smile on his face. After two months of hard work, the joy of being harvested was washed away.

After removing the power arm, Kaz quickly wrapped his arm in bandages, just in case, to hide the external mechanics now visible in his arm. The pain of just moving the arm without the power arm's support was barely bearable.

After all, he had just cut his arm open. It was a miracle it could move to begin with.

Suddenly, a harsh alarm sounded in the laboratory, and Kaz was awakened and stopped the work at hand.

He hurried to the central control room.

From the type of alarm, Kaz could know that someone broke into the base, and the threat was quite big.

~~~
The alarm lights in the corridor were flashing rapidly, and Kaz hurried through the corridor to the central control room.
Chance, this is a chance to escape HYDRA's grasp...
Bucky was frozen in the cold storage at the bottom of the base, which made it difficult for Kaz to use him to escape from the Hydra base.
In the past two months, Kaz had come up with plans one after another, but either the plan itself is not very feasible, or the time period required is too long.
Today, an outsider suddenly sneaked into the base. Similar things have never happened in the memory of the original owner Kaz and the current Kaz.
This base is located under a remote manor in New York Hempstead. The base has been around for decades, and the secrecy measures are pretty good. Kaz could not think of a person who could manage to get in by themselves. Leading him to conclude its a mutant. So he plans to escape during the chaos.
At that time, he will find a city at random, to a place he hopes HYDRA wont find him. Maybe even try faking his own death if he can.
Walking along the corridor to the end, and down another staircase, Kaz arrived at the central control room.
Most of the high-level base members such as Dr. Zola have gathered here, but Sinthea was not there. Several high-level executives were huddled together, looking at the monitoring screen in front of them, and were discussing fiercely.
"Oh, God. Do any of you know this woman? She doesn't seem to be superpowered, but she is taking down guard after guard!"
The security director of the base, Orson, touched his bald head, opened his mouth wide, and shouted:
"Dr. Zola, do you know this woman? Is she a super soldier transformed by one of your peers?"
"Shut up, Orson. I don't know her, I'm looking up a database for comparison. Don't make a fuss, The Winter Soldier will take care of her."
Hearing their discussion, Kaz rushed to the back of Dr. Zola, and only then did he see the picture on the monitoring screen.
I saw a woman with shoulder length brown-red hair and a tight leather body suit, practically dancing around HYDRA guards.
The surveillance cameras in the base were worse than bank security cameras, although her face could not be seen clearly, Kaz recognized the figure of this woman, she was agent trained by the "Red Room" of the former Soviet Union, Natalia Romanova, or more commonly known as Natasha Romanoff in the MCU.
"Natalia Romanova, born in Stalingrad, the former Soviet Union in 1928, has been transformed by the former Soviet government in the secret facility 'Red Room', with strong physical fitness and fighting skills, known as the 'Black Widow' , like a deadly poisonous spider."
[A/N: I am using her Russian name instead of her English name "Natasha Romanoff", this fits better with the version of Black Widow she is in this story. Being 80 and all that.]
That information told Kaz more about the world, from what he knows, the year is 2005, so this Natalia is 80+ years old! Which shocked everyone in the room.
This must mean this is Earth 616, aka Earth Prime. Or some variation of that.
