Panic gripped my chest. The thought of Astrid being in danger gnawed at me.
I paced back and forth, my mind racing, trying to figure out how to get to her. But no matter how fast I moved, no matter how much I pushed myself, I knew I wouldn't make it in time. The creatures that lurked in the chambers and the environment were relentless, and even if I reached her, I wasn't sure I had the strength to fend them off.
"Damn it!" I hissed, slamming my fist against the nearest pillar, the rough cement digging into my skin. The pain was a welcome distraction, if only for a moment. "There has to be a way..."
But what way? How could I save her when I was barely keeping myself together? My thoughts spiraled, each one more frantic than the last. I couldn't lose her. Not now. Not ever.
