Chereads / Zenin Days / Chapter 19 - The Phantom

Chapter 19 - The Phantom

[Author Note]

Disc: HrPrTeam

I forgor to mention that this story is slight A.U. 💀

Most elements will stay the same (99.9%), but I'm adding depth to unknown characters in the manga.

Although having Toji in verse throws the story off canon, lol.

3rd P.O.V.

Shishiba had a nonchalant look on his face as he stared at the newcomers.

Yotsumura glanced to his left, ignoring Satoda and staring directly at Toji.

With a tired look, he walked over. "Toji, I see you made it to the island."

Toji raised his eyebrow. "What, are you gonna stare at me again?"

Yes, Yotsumura did, in fact, stare at him.

It was silent for a moment before Satoda spoke up. "Shishiba, please leave. There are a couple of things we need to discuss...in private."

Yotsumura has been mentoring Shishiba for years. As a direct student of an Order member, inevitably, he will join their ranks.

While he found the situation strange, it wasn't his job to poke around in whatever the two monsters had to discuss with Toji.

Shishiba scratched his hair as he left the room. "Alright, whatever."

...

Yotsumura sat in the middle of the room, where a table stood, and gestured for Toji to sit with him. "Come on, let's talk."

With no words, Toji walked over and sat across from him.

He noticed that Satoda stood at the door with a neutral expression.

Taking a deep breath, Yotsumura spoke. "The JAA has tasked me with eliminating conspirators against the chairman."

Toji rested his chin on his fist. "Cool."

If one were trained, they could see Yotsumura's eye slightly twitch.

Yotsumura's face darkened. "Kindaka informed me about the traitor you encountered and the one behind the attack on the chairman's wife, Sei Asaki."

Toji leaned forward. "What about it?"

He put his hands on his legs. "While I've narrowed down certain individuals, there was something we came across."

Toji raised an eyebrow as Yotsumura reached into his suit and pulled out a folder.

*slide*

He pushed it over the table.

Toji narrowed his eyes as he saw the contents.

As Toji became lost in his thoughts, Yotsumura spoke up. "Four days ago, Rion Akao was attacked by someone named Yogi Gorou."

(A/N - "Introducing random names for people. Don't bother looking him up since he doesn't exist.")

Toji knew precisely where this was going due to the information gathered, but Yotsumura continued. "Akao described him as having rock-like skin. It turns out that after an autopsy was done, his skin was layered with graphene, and his bones were replaced with a titanium alloy. In short, it gave him microscopic armor and a reinforced body."

There were a few things that didn't add up.

A few questions plagued his mind.

Yotsumura crossed his arms. "There have been similar cases on a smaller scale, but everyone's M.O. is the same."

Toji raised an eyebrow. "That is?"

...

"Unusual superhuman abilities."

...

Toji gave him a deadpan stare. "What does that mean?"

Yotsumura kept his neutral face. "It means exactly what it sounds like. Traits that are unusual for humans. It seems like people have been targeted for similar reasons. We have speculated that Rion Akao was targeted because of her ability to see Paths."

Toji pondered. "Hmm, what does this have to do with the Sei guy?"

Yotsumura crossed his hands and fingers. "There is a high chance that he's working with whoever is running this freak show."

There was still one thing that didn't make any sense.

Toji asked the question. "Why are you telling me this?"

The question was on his mind.

He was a new Order member that came out of nowhere—adding on the fact that he was ridiculously strong for no reason. If anything, he should be one of the most suspicious people on their list.

Yotsumura leaned on the table. "The JAA isn't stupid enough to send someone as skilled as you to school. It would be a waste of resources; in normal circumstances, you would bypass the requirement."

Toji noted Yotsumura's hostility. "'In normal circumstances?'"

He nodded. "You fit every category regarding these people with unusual abilities aside from targeting others. Added onto the fact that your appearance fits the exact time frame of the conspiracy against the chairman."

Toji huffed a laugh. "Ahh, I get it now...You stick me on a remote island without an escape route while surrounding me with Order members."

Yotsumura, Satoda, and Hyo are the only Order-level people he has met on this trip.

His face turns serious. "Thing is, it's not enough. I'm not trapped in here with you; you're trapped in here with me."

It goes silent.

Toji's eyes suddenly widened as he felt the presence of someone behind the door.

*creek*

...

Someone strong.

...

The door slowly opens. "_̷͓̆-̶̝̥͗_̵̣̘͌-̸͙̘͋̚_̷͉̑̕-̷̢͍̋̃_̴̝̺̉̾-̷̡͇̆_̸̧̪͛-̸̨͍͊̃_̷̥̈-̴̱͛_̵̧̎̈-̴͖̻̄̚_̷̭͐͛ͅ-̴̟̈́_̴͉͕͌-̸̛̼̌_̸͍̞͌̾-̶̢̃̓_̵̪͛̅-̷̢̰͂́_̵̻̜̏-̶̻̍͂_̷̬͋͛-̴͙͂͋_̵̫̠̊̚-̵̭̈̒_̸̪̮̌-̴͈̮̍_̴̯̆-̶̦̣̋͘_̴̟̝͝"

An old man slowly opened the door, doing nothing but muttering nonsense to himself.

He is frail-looking with medium-length slicked back, white hair, and eyes that remain closed.

The main thing of note was the katana that he was holding.

Toji's blood started boiling as he had a wide, malicious smile.

He couldn't help but think to himself. 'I haven't wanted to fight someone like this in a very, very long time.'

Yotsumura spoke up. "Meet Takamura, the Phantom of the JAA."

Toji glanced at Takamura and kept his smile, cracking his knuckles in the process.

Before things escalated further, Yotsumura spoke. "We would rather not fight, so we want to ask you some questions."

Takamura stood next to Satoda, mumbling to himself.

Toji snapped back to normal as he turned to face Yotsumura once more. "What do you want to know?"

Yotsumura sighed. "Let's start with your origins."

While he was willing to talk, Toji's irritation was shown since he hated being threatened.

His eyebrows furrowed. "I was a member of the Zenin clan, then became an assassin, killed a lot of people, gambled, probably died, and woke up in some kinda water tank. I didn't have clothes, so I met Velcro at the department store and joined this Order thing to make money."

Toji was purposefully vague in the first portion.

He wasn't going to talk about his kid, his love life, or his childhood with some random people threatening to kill him.

Yotsumura pondered briefly since Toji didn't give him much to work with.

If it were any other person, they might've resorted to torture or other forms of information gathering, but starting a fight is something they want to avoid.

He saw what Toji did to Kindaka.

Even if they have Takamura here, it isn't a 100% guarantee that they will all make it out alive in a fight.

Most of the information was useless, but a few things stuck out to him.

He spoke. "What do you mean, 'probably died' and 'waking up in a water tank'?"

Toji rested his chin on his fist. "Exactly what it sounds like. In 2006, I lost a fight against a teenager named Satoru Gojo, where I lost a large portion of my body. Initially, I assumed I was dead, but I woke up in a water tank with tubes connected to me six years later, in perfect shape."

At this point, Toji was well aware that this world might not be his own, but he couldn't prove anything, and arguing about specifics would be a waste of time.

Given their current circumstances, he could have asked for information about this place, but it was clearly not the time.

There was still one question on everyone's mind.

Yotsumura narrowed his eyes. "What is that worm thing you keep inside of you?"

Toji stretched his arms and yawned. "It's called the inventory curse. It stores my weapons and doesn't dissolve in my stomach. An undetectable and easy storage for tools."

The room went silent as everyone thought over all his words.

Satoda nodded at Yotsumura since she couldn't detect any deception in his speech.

It turns out that he, quite literally, appeared out of nowhere.

...

Toji broke everyone's thoughts. "Am I out of a job now?"

...

Yotsumura rubbed his forehead in irritation. "This conversation felt useless if not for one thing: you returning from near-death and becoming stronger. This could be the start of something...Is there anything else you can do to help?"

Even though the conversation was primarily useless, everyone was glad it didn't turn into a bloodbath.

In truth, they even had hundreds of professional assassins on standby in case the conversation went south.

Toji smirked. "Fulfill the JAA's end of the current contract, and if you keep me employed, I'll kill whoever you want me to."

The old Toji would've likely killed everyone here since they felt like cornering him, but this gig was his only source of income.

He didn't want to work at a cash register or a convenience store.

Toji's smirk widened. "Besides..."

...

...

...

"I'm good at killing people with unusual abilities."
