However, some people would still wake up as ordinary people, and those who failed to wake up as either an ordinary person or a person with superpowers would wake up as zombies.
The mechanics weren't clearly explained in the novel, but it only says that those who were able to adapt and weren't completely taken over by the new force that suddenly covered the world successfully woke up with superpowers.
Those that were able to resist the new force and have a slow adaptation rate didn't wake up with any superpowers but still woke up as normal people.
While those that were totally assimilated with it became zombies.
