Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Joy's Sunny Day

Joy woke up to the warm sunshine peeking through her window, casting a bright glow on her small apartment. She stretched, yawned, and smiled, feeling the excitement of a new day. After getting dressed, she headed to the kitchen to start her morning routine.

As she poured herself a cup of coffee, her phone buzzed with a text from her best friend, Emily: "Hey, Joy! Don't forget about our lunch plans today!"

Joy replied: "Wouldn't miss it for the world!"

Just then, her allergies kicked in – not the usual pollen or dust, but her unique allergy to tears. She felt a sudden itchiness in her eyes, and her vision blurred. She quickly grabbed her medication and took a deep breath.

Joy arrived at the DX Company office, feeling refreshed after her morning routine. As she walked to her desk, the elevator doors opened, and a tall, imposing figure stepped out. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, his eyes fixed on some papers in his hand.

"Who's that?" Joy whispered to Emily, who was sitting at the next desk.

"That's John, the new CEO," Emily replied, her voice barely audible. "Rumor has it, he's tough as nails."

As John approached, Joy felt a shiver run down her spine. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and Joy saw a glimmer of something – sadness, perhaps, or vulnerability – before his expression turned cold and distant.

"Good morning, everyone," John said, his deep voice commanding attention. "I trust you're all working hard to meet our quarterly targets."

The room fell silent, with all eyes on John. Joy felt her allergy act up again, this time triggered by the tension in the air.

As John turned to leave, Joy stood up to grab a file from the printer. In her haste, she knocked over her coffee cup, spilling the contents all over John's crisp white shirt.

"Oh no, I'm so sorry!" Joy exclaimed, mortified.

John's expression turned from cold to glacial. "It's fine," he said curtly, grabbing a handful of tissues from the nearby box.

Joy rushed to help, her hands touching John's as they both reached for the tissues. A spark of electricity ran through her body, and she felt her allergy act up again.

As they cleaned up the mess, Joy couldn't help but notice the contrast between John's tough exterior and the hint of kindness in his eyes.

"Let me get you a new shirt," Joy offered, feeling embarrassed.

John hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Very well. My office. Now."

As they waited for the new shirt to arrive, Joy tried to make small talk, but John's monosyllabic responses made it difficult. Just as she was about to give up, the door burst open, and John's assistant, Mrs. Thompson, rushed in with a bright pink shirt.

"Sorry about the delay, sir!" Mrs. Thompson said, out of breath.

John's eyes widened in horror as he took the shirt. "What...is...this?" he asked, his voice trembling with suppressed laughter.

Joy couldn't help but giggle at the sight of the garish shirt. "I think it's...um...a statement piece?" she ventured.

John's expression changed from shock to amusement, and he chuckled, a deep, rich sound that made Joy's heart skip a beat.

"Well, I suppose I have no choice but to make a statement," John said, putting on the pink shirt.

Joy laughed, feeling the tension dissipate. "You look...um... quite dashing, sir."

John smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I'm glad you approve, Joy."

For a moment, they just looked at each other, the air filled with a newfound sense of connection.

Just as Joy and John were sharing a moment, her eyes began to itch and her vision blurred. She felt the familiar sensation of her allergy kicking in, this time triggered by the emotional connection she'd made with John.

"Oh no, not again!" Joy exclaimed, stumbling backward as she frantically grabbed for her medication.

John's expression changed from amusement to concern. "Joy, what's wrong?"

Joy's eyes welled up with tears, and she felt a sneeze building up. "My allergy...it's just...ah-choo!"

The sneeze exploded out of her, causing her to stumble further. John rushed to catch her, and they both tumbled to the floor in a heap.

The room fell silent, with Mrs. Thompson and the other employees staring in shock.

John quickly helped Joy up, his face inches from hers. "Are you okay?"

Joy nodded, still sniffling. "Y-yes...I'm s-so sorry..."

John smiled and handed her a tissue. "Don't apologize. I think this is the most excitement I've had all year."

Joy laughed, feeling a spark of connection again.

As Joy blew her nose, John gently took her arm and led her to the company nurse's station. "Let's get you fixed up," he said, his voice soft with concern.

The nurse, Mrs. Patel, examined Joy's eyes and pronounced her allergic reaction mild. John, however, took charge, expertly administering a secondary treatment and soothing Joy's irritated skin with a cool compress.

Joy watched, amazed, as John worked with the precision of a trained medic. "Wow, you're a regular doctor," she teased.

John smiled, his eyes crinkling. "Just a few tricks I learned in the army," he said, his tone humble.

Joy's eyes widened in surprise. "You were in the army?"

John nodded. "Yes, before I joined the corporate world. I guess you could say I've had my fair share of adventures."

As they walked back to the office, Joy felt a newfound respect for John's hidden talents and mysterious past.
