Chapter 2 - Prologue

Early October, 2022, Autumn, Start of the academic year.

An Introduction to Emily Parker

As I began my Master's program at the University of Chicago, the early autumn breeze greeted me with a sense of new beginnings.

Hyde Park, with its vibrant campus life, felt like the perfect backdrop for my journey into sociology and anthropology.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Emily Parker, a master's degree student at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park, specializing in Sociology and Anthropology.

I was born and raised in the small town of Winnetka, just north of Chicago. My parents, both dedicated teachers, instilled in me a love for learning and a curiosity about the world from an early age.

As an only child, I spent much of my time immersed in books and exploring the natural world around me.

I attended the North Shore Country Day School, a private Christian high school in Winnetka, before entering the University of Chicago.

On January 6, 2021, I remember sitting in my apartment, glued to the TV screen as the United States Capitol was stormed by a mob.

The chaos and violence starkly illustrated the powerful and often dangerous intersection of rationalism and extremism. It was a day that made me question how these forces can coexist in our society.

A few months earlier, in November 2020, I watched the news as massive demonstrations erupted across Belarus following a contentious election. Citizens flooded the streets to protest the results, leading to widespread unrest and a brutal government crackdown.

These events were a grim reminder of how quickly rational discourse can devolve into extremism and chaos.

Living in an age marked by rapid technological advancements and unprecedented access to information, I've seen firsthand how the tension between rationalism and extremism has become increasingly pronounced.

Rationalism, with its emphasis on reason, evidence, and critical thinking, aims to navigate the complexities of our modern world through a lens of logic and empirical understanding.

On the flip side, extremism—whether political, religious, or ideological—thrives on absolute certainty, often rejecting opposing viewpoints with fervent intensity.

This dichotomy fascinates and terrifies me. Can rationalism and extremism coexist? That's the fundamental question driving my thesis.

To answer it, I plan to delve deep into the nature of these seemingly opposing forces, examining their origins, impacts, and the ways in which they intersect and collide.

Through historical and contemporary examples, psychological perspectives, and societal influences, I hope to uncover the intricate dynamics at play.

To explore further into the issue, I scroll the net. I found various articles and news all over the places. It is a prevailing issue that seems yet to find harmony.

For instance, I read about the impact of social media on spreading extremist ideologies, the role of political polarization in modern democracies, and the challenges of fostering dialogue in a divided society.

These findings illustrate the pervasive nature of the problem and the urgent need for solutions.

My journey will explore the philosophical foundations of rational thought, the driving forces behind extremist ideologies, and the myriad ways these forces manifest in our daily lives.

I'll look into case studies, personal narratives, and conduct expert interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that arise from the interplay between rationalism and extremism.

As I navigate this complex terrain, I will also seek pathways to coexistence—strategies for fostering dialogue, promoting education, and building inclusive communities.

Ultimately, my research is not just an exploration of conflict but a quest for solutions, aiming to illuminate how societies can reconcile these powerful forces to create a more balanced and empathetic world.

In times when ideological divides seem wider than ever, understanding the relationship between rationalism and extremism feels crucial.

Whether you are a scholar, a student, or simply a curious reader, this journey invites you to join me in exploring one of the most pressing issues of our time.

Together, we will strive to answer the question: Can rationalism and extremism coexist, and if so, how?
