Chapter 21 - 21 The Battle of Kaushal: A Kingdom's Last Stand

Kartikeya's army was vast, consisting of thousands of soldiers, numerous elephants, and cavalry with incredible speed. In contrast, Kaushal's army was not as large, and they lacked a significant number of elephants. Yet, under the leadership of Commander Barauni, the army advanced.

By evening, both armies were positioned a mile apart, facing each other.

While enjoying his evening feast, Kartikeya casually spoke to his advisor Vidur, "So Vidur, what will tomorrow's sunrise bring?"

"The victory of Magadh, Your Highness. Our strategy in this war is excellent, and victory is certain. Besides, we have more elephants than Kaushal's entire army," Vidur responded confidently.

Vidur then added with a laugh, "To be honest, I find Princess Radha amusing. Despite knowing everything, she has sent her handful of soldiers to their deaths." With this, Vidur burst into laughter, and others joined in.

On the other side, under Barauni's leadership, the soldiers of Kaushal were showing clear signs of despair. Their morale was dropping.

Before the battle commenced the next morning, Barauni and Devavarman inspected the troops and delivered a speech, swearing by Lord Mahadev, inspiring victory.

This speech rekindled the spirit of the soldiers, and with renewed determination, they took an oath in the name of their queen and the Kaushal kingdom, sounding the war horn for battle.

As the first light of dawn broke over the battlefield, the tension in the air was palpable. The soldiers of Kaushal stood in neat formations, the chill of the morning mixing with the heat of their anxieties. The banners of Kaushal fluttered in the gentle breeze, while the distant echoes of enemy drums signaled the advance of Kartikeya's colossal army.

Princess Radha stood at the edge of her palace, feeling the unfolding scene with a heart weighed down by the responsibility of her people. Her royal attire glimmered faintly in the rising sunlight, but her mind was far from the regal image she portrayed. She had made a promise to protect her kingdom, but seeing the sheer size of Kartikeya's forces now—elephants towering, cavalry charging—the odds seemed overwhelmingly against her.

"Barauni is with the vanguard, preparing for the first clash. His mind is focused on the strategy we discussed last night. We will divide Kartikeya's forces, weaken their strength, and strike where they least expect."

A sound in the distance broke their conversation—the deep, resonant call of a war horn from Kartikeya's camp. The enemy was moving.

---

On the other side of the battlefield, Kartikeya sat atop his war elephant, surveying the land with a smirk of confidence. His golden armor gleamed in the light, his posture relaxed as though this battle were already won. Vidur, his cunning advisor, stood by his side, eyes sharp with calculation.

"Rajkumar, the enemy is restless. They are afraid," Vidur commented, squinting at the Kaushal forces in the distance.

Kartikeya chuckled. "Fear can be a powerful weapon. Let them tremble. By the end of the day, Kaushal will be nothing more than a distant memory."

Vidur nodded, his mind already racing ahead to the rewards that would come after victory—power, land, and the downfall of Radha, who had dared to challenge their might. "Shall we begin the attack, Rajkumar?"

"Let them taste the thunder of our elephants first. Crush their morale before we crush their bodies," Kartikeya replied with a cruel smile.

Back in Kaushal's camp, the sound of the enemy war horn was met with silence, until Barauni appeared before his soldiers, his voice rising above the din.

"Brothers! Warriors of Kaushal!" he shouted. "Today is the day we defend everything we hold dear! They may have more men, more elephants, but they do not have our spirit, our heart! Remember your families, your homes, your queen who stands with you! Today, we fight for Kaushal, and we will fight until our last breath!"

The soldiers roared in response, their fear momentarily forgotten, replaced by the fire of Barauni's words. Devavarman stood beside him, his eyes scanning the faces of the men, seeing the rekindled hope.

Princess Radha feel from a distance, her heart swelling with a mixture of pride and dread. "May the gods be with us," she whispered.

The first clash was imminent.

---

The sun had fully risen when the first wave of Kartikeya's elephants thundered across the field, their sheer size and power shaking the ground beneath them. Kaushal's archers released their arrows in a deadly storm, but the elephants continued, trampling everything in their path.

But Barauni had prepared for this. With a single command, he directed a group of his fastest cavalry to encircle the elephants, targeting their flanks with long spears designed to pierce through the elephants' thick hide. The elephants, confused and wounded, began to falter, their formation breaking.

Vidur, observing this from Kartikeya's side, frowned. "They are more coordinated than I expected."

Kartikeya's grin faltered slightly, but he waved his hand dismissively. "A minor setback. Send in the next wave. Overwhelm them. Kaushal cannot last long."

---

In the heart of the battlefield, Devavarman led a daring counterattack. His sword gleamed as he fought fiercely, cutting down enemies with precision and grace. Barauni was at his side, their combined tactics forcing Kartikeya's men into disarray. But even as they gained ground, the sheer number of enemies seemed endless.

The battle raged on for hours, with neither side gaining a decisive advantage. As dusk approached, the battlefield was littered with the dead and dying, but Kaushal still stood strong, holding the line against Kartikeya's overwhelming numbers.

With a fierce resolve burning in her chest, she pressed forward. The outcome of the battle was still uncertain, but one thing was clear: Kaushal would not fall easily.

The sun dipped below the horizon, and the night brought with it a brief respite. But the war was far from over. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new losses. Yet Radha knew, in her heart, that Kaushal's spirit was unbreakable.

And as long as that spirit lived, there was hope.

---

The next day would bring the final confrontation, and with it, the fate of Kaushal.
