"Bullshit."
"I'm telling the truth. On my father's life, that's exactly how it happened."
Sirzechs shakes his head, laughing at the sheer absurdity of the story I've thus far told.
"As a man who's been punched by Bidleid, in the face no less, let me tell you, you don't just shrug those off. He's got fists like a damn train."
"Well, I guess I'm just better than you then. I took about four and got right back up." He snorts.
"Says the guy whose entire gimmick is being damn near immortal. How the hell does your healing even work anyway?"
"Trying to steal my secrets, Sirzechs?"
He scoffs, crossing his arms and leaning back against the sign ahead of me.
"More like trying to stop the Phenex from assassinating you. You might run them out of business."
"Well, unfortunately you can't quite bottle up my medication, at least not that I'm aware of. Maybe one day I'll try." I start, sat down on a nearby upturned carriage.
We've been walking for just about an hour now, and through my own embellishments of the story and general question answering I've only now gotten up to my torturing.
The only reason we've stopped briefly is that Sirzechs wanted to send word of our impending arrival to Lilith, presumably so that the High Council can gather in preparation.
"Truth be told, I'm not so sure how it even works myself. I just... think really hard about wanting to be fixed, and it happens."
He blinks, confused.
"Isn't that just normal magic?"
"Not quite. I don't need Mana to do it, I channel the healing through this little Sigil." I say, dangling the Abyss Flower Icon from my palm as I do so.
"So that's your weakness? I take away your little keychain and you lose your most valuable asset?" He retorts, arms still crossed and severely unimpressed.
"If only it were that easy to kill me. No, I think you'll find separating me from the Abyss Flower is quite a difficult thing to do." In response, all he does is snicker.
"...You call it the Abyss Flower? What are you, 12 years old?" I try to ignore the dagger I feel in my heart at those words.
"Wha- It's a cool name! What does the name even matter, the function is far more important in this discussion anyways!"
His voice shifts, far more smug now.
"Whatever you say, Demi-fiend. I can see why you hate that title now, you'd probably prefer something 'cooler' like Sanguine Devil of Eternal Decay, wouldn't you?"
"Just shut up and send the bloody transmission already."
"Of course. Your wish is my command, Oh Great Sanguine Devil-"
I cut him off mid speech by throwing a knife I constructed at his shoe, something he dodges easily with a laugh on his lips, and despite my grumbling I can't help the smile on my own either.
I expected this walk to be awkward and tense, but no. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he actually wants to be friends with me. Whether that's to keep an avenue with Grayfia available or because he actually likes me is yet to be seen.
Though, my mood has been rather sour since the walk started. Not for anything to do with Sirzechs or our brief spat, no, my grudge is with Serafall and her inability to hold back.
Harbinger (Null):
Once a weapon of great skill and finesse, now a husk of metal. The weapons internal mechanisms have been severely damaged and thus it is currently unusable.
Yeah. She broke my fucking sword. I suppose that's my fault, for using a simple blade against one of the most powerful fighters in this realm, but I hadn't expected it to be so soon.
If I hadn't already forgiven her, I'd be quite miffed. It's fine, though. I still have Caduceus, Harbinger was just a nice alternative for a bit more oomph. Besides, I'm sure I can bring it to Ajuka and have it fixed.
Come to think of it, I'm sure I've put Caduceus through far more stress, how come it hasn't been damaged in any way?
[As your Signature Weapon, Caduceus is built from your soul. The blade has one purpose, to be alongside you until the end of your journey, and therefore it cannot break.]
That... makes sense, though I'm not sure what that would mean for if I ever find my soul being damaged.
[If you ever find your soul to be in danger, pray that it is not! Damage to the soul is incredibly painful, and if enough damage is taken it is irreperable!]
Oh boy, horrors beyond my comprehension. I do so dearly love matters of the soul. Bullshit, metaphysical thing that it is.
Maybe I could strengthen my soul with that Touki thing. At least, I would if I had any idea how to do it, and I doubt there's any Yokai who'd be willing to teach me unfortunately.
------------------------------------
"Alright, I have good news and bad news." Sirzechs comes back finally and clears his throat to get my attention.
"The good news is, the High Council are willing to give you a day to rest and get your story together after the peril you went through in Lucifaad."
I suppose it only has been a day and some change since we escaped, hasn't it? It's easy to forget that, sometimes.
Sirzechs grimaces as he recounts the bad news. "Bad news is, Lord Bael wants to have a word with you. Alone. Only after you get the Council off your ass, at least."
I can't help but be intrigued. What's gotten Sirzechs, the most trusting and faithful man I've yet known thus far, to dislike Lord Bael?
"Why is that bad news, General Gremory?"
He seemingly hesitates, mulling the idea of saying these next words to me over for a second, until something passes through his eyes and he decides I should hear this.
"I don't like him much."
"No shit you don't like him, you looked like you'd eaten a lemon as you said his name. I'm asking you why."
He moves, suddenly sitting next to me on my broken carriage, hands both behind his back as he looks at the sky.
"Serafall didn't start the war." He quickly follows up. "At least, I don't blame her for it."
And then the floodgates open.
"After the decree by the Satan's, when the first soldiers were being conscripted for the Heaven Reclamation, nobody wanted to say no. You gotta understand, it wasn't something we ever even thought of. The idea hadn't crossed our minds."
His eyes glaze over, as if he's living the memory.
"We spent our whole lives being told that there is no greater authority than our Satans, and that there is no greater shame than to disobey them. So we didn't."
"Until, one day, Zekram Bael decided to come to the Academy. He was revered by everyone; the First Devil coming to the Academy? Some people sat on the floor, floated in the air just to hear his speech."
"But when he spoke, it made everyone confused. He'd been assigned as a guest speaker, to impart upon the youths the importance of Clan Traits, and how valuable our blood is."
"His first words when he entered that hallowed building weren't about blood. They weren't about Clan Traits. They were pretty simple, but they lit a fire in Serafall I'd never seen before."
"He said: Why? Why should we allow our sons, our brothers and our fathers to be taken away to fight in a war none of us believe in? Why should we listen to our Great Satans if they won't listen to us?"
He sighs, rubbing the bridge of his nose with his hand.
"Everything after that is history. Everyone just accepts Serafall as the figurehead, as the one who started the Civil War, but I've always blamed Lord Bael for it."
If I didn't already have some heavy skepticism towards him by virtue of being a Clan Devil, I most certainly do now. It all seems so... odd. I make sure to tell that to Sirzechs as well.
"I'm making a bet, here and now." His eyebrow raises in intrigue.
"Lord Bael wants a seat of power for himself. Beyond just the High Council, beyond the Court and beyond the Clans. There's no way he didn't start this war for the sake of usurping the Satans."
"Can't he have just wanted what was best for his people?" Sirzechs retorts.
"No, if he wanted what was best, he'd have recruited soldiers to his side. Not children, not students in the Academy. He wanted the next generation of Devils to fight his war, because then they'd look to him as a source of wisdom, giving him direct control."
Sirzechs shakes his head. He seems intent on making me look like a manic conspirator.
"That would be a valid point, if it wasn't for the fact that the most powerful Devils, the only ones who could content with the Satans, were all students. He wanted security and a real chance to win the war, not malleable chess pieces."
"That's just what he wants you to think."
He laughs, as if I've not been bringing up serious points for consideration. Maybe I haven't, maybe I'm blinded by my own personal bias.
"Alistair, you can't just slander the name of one of the most revered Devils alive and have your response to valid points against that be 'he wants you to think that.' You're only making yourself look worse." He stretches his arms, standing now.
"He stopped another Great War from starting, at the cost of us fighting a war with ourselves. I may not like him for it, but that doesn't mean I don't respect him."
"Alright, fine, you're right. Maybe I am just throwing stones for the sake of it. I'll ask one more question though."
"Will you drop this if I answer it?"
"Yup. I won't bring it up again." He sighs, something that is quickly becoming a signature for him.
"Go ahead then. Ask away."
"After the Satan's died, their children took over. Surely, since they're inexperienced, they'd have advisors in some form, right? Older, more experienced Devils to help them take the reins over time?"
He nods slowly, following along with my words thus far.
"And surely, as one of the oldest, if not the oldest Devil alive currently, Zekram Bael would take precedent as an advisor to the Satan's, right? He'd work quite closely with them, hold a decent amount of sway."
"Where are you going with this?" He asks, not so much impatient as he is reluctant to acknowledge my words.
"Who's to say he didn't advise the Satans to go ahead with the King's Court Massacre?"
And then he frowns.
"I would watch your next words carefully, Alistair. That isn't a joking matter."
"Okay, hear me out! He works closely with the Satan's, they die, kids take over. He's not a fan, he thinks he could do it better. So? He goes to the Academy, tells them to fight back. He goes to the Satan's, tells them to put down anyone who tries to fight back."
"Now he's got a war, he's got an army that will fight for him in the name of vengeance, and he's got a clear path to the seat of power he wanted. Surely you can see how suspicious this all looks?"
He folds his arms, frown deepening with every moment I continue to speak.
"You're right. It does look suspicious."
"Finally, you under!-"
"But." He cuts in, stopping me dead in my tracks before I can celebrate.
"I know Lord Bael. I've spoken to him countless times, hosted him at my own home. I'm choosing to trust him over your suspicions, because the Lord Bael that I know is a good man who wants what is best for our people. He didn't tell us to march on Lilith, he didn't tell us to raise arms. He told us to think for ourselves."
"And so, that's what I'll do."
For a moment I'm left thinking he's blinded by his own faith, but then I see it. For a fraction of a second, something flickers through his eyes, and I recognise it instantly. Doubt. Undeniable doubt.
And thank fuck he felt it, because the pieces line up far too nicely for Zekram to be innocent.
Though... there's one thing that confuses me. If Zekram really is trying to Puppeteer this war behind the scenes, if he's really been moving pieces this whole time, why haven't the Satan's said anything about it?
Surely they'd have had ample opportunity to say 'Lord Bael gave us the suggestion, he's playing you all for a fool.' So why haven't they? What's going on that I'm not seeing?
I suppose I cant know yet, and I doubt I'll know for a while, but I do know for a fact that I don't trust him one bit. For now, I'll need to lay off the gas, if I push the bar too much Sirzechs may just stop listening outright.
"Maybe you're right. It's presumptuous to make these claims before I've even met the man, I suppose."
He snorts.
"I'm pretty sure the word your looking for is libel, but, eh, it's close enough." He then puts a hand on my shoulder, suddenly trying to be far more sympathetic than before.
"I understand you don't trust those in power, especially after what you've been through with Bidleid and... regrettably Serafall, but please. Give him a chance. I trust him, so there's no reason you shouldn't either."
While he's thoroughly missed the mark, I appreciate the sentiment nonetheless.
"Fine then. I guess it can't hurt to see what he has to say. I'll need to survive my meeting with the High Council first."
And just like that, the tense atmosphere vanishes, and Sirzechs is laughing again like all is well.
"Please. You've survived the Son of Beelzebub, the Eternal Warrior. A few old Clan Heads won't prove any challenge."
"...is that really his title? The Eternal Warrior? Seems a bit ironic given he hid in a mansion for 8 years, no?" Like a schoolgirl, Sirzechs giggles.
"I know, right? Always makes me laugh whenever I hear it, and some of his other ones too. Eternal Warrior, The Archvile, Champion of Malebolge."
"The hell is Malebolge?" I spit out, having never once heard that word since I arrived.
"You've never heard of the Malebolge Arena? Huh. Well, if I had to describe it, it was basically just a big pit in the ground with a bunch of seats around it. Nobody cared about how Malebolge looked though. The real interest was what went down in the pit."
"And that was?"
"Gladiatoral combat. Be it two versus two, one versus one, or a full on free-for all with tens of men, Devils would fight tooth and nail in Malebolge for fame and fortune."
"Anyone could sign up to fight as well, and a good few Devils made their name in the pits, though a good few were harmed irreparably too. The only real stopgap for death in Malebolge was a few referees around the arena, but sometimes things got too far."
He hums, thinking back on memories from decades ago.
"When I was a kid, Father used to take me there to watch the three Satans fight amongst themselves. Bidleid never once lost. Someone even tried to challenge Bidleid once, but... they didn't last long."
He suddenly turns pensive, as if he'd repressed the memories and now regretted opening that can of worms.
"Come to think of it, the whole idea of Malebolge was barbaric. When it worked, it worked well, but sometimes it was nothing short of cruel. Maybe it was to stroke his ego, but Bidleid once had a battle against 15 Devils. They had no Clan Traits, no training. Just 15 men he plucked from the streets."
I can't help but speak out in incredulity, the idea that people would just allow random men to be taken and forced to fight bloody against that monster leaving me shocked.
"And people just let him? He just went around and grabbed people for his exhibition match, and nobody batted an eye as he beat them to death?"
He smiles wryly as he responds.
"It's as I said. None of us had ever thought of challenging the Satan's. Malebolge had been around since before I was born. It was normal, so I never questioned it. The people were told to enjoy it, so they did. You wouldn't believe how expensive tickets to Malebolge were, before the War."
Well, fuck. That must've been the precursor to the Rating Games. Makes a lot more sense, now. Bidleid must have one hell of a fragile ego to fight 15 regular Devils and call himself the champion, though.
"I mean, it makes sense I guess. Devils love fighting. Why not make it a business? It'd probably be the best thing to happen to the Underworld since Magic if you could find a way to make sure it's perfectly safe."
"That's kind of a moot point, Demi-fiend. Devils love sex, and that's not exactly a booming industry. Malebolge just scratched an itch in people, we'd gotten so used to the Great War that we almost started to miss the bloodshed if I had to guess."
He quickly follows up, suddenly realising that we've been sat here for the last few minutes doing nothing as he jumps off the carriage and motions for me to follow.
"Now, as much as I'd love to talk about the Underworld more, you still have a story to finish, and we still have a city to get to; trust me you don't wanna keep Lord Bael waiting, he's an ass about punctuality."
With nothing else to do but follow on, I sit up and quickly fall in line with the General, who continues where we left off as I do.
"Now, you mentioned something about waking up in a room with Bidleid and a few broken ribs, right? What happened after?"
"I did what any good man would do in that situation. I gambled my life on a lie. Paid off in dividends too, because while I may have lost an eye, it started a chain of events that led to me killing Euclid Lucifuge."
I don't miss the way he almost flinches at the name Lucifuge, but I also don't miss the way he tries his best to get over it with a smile. I'm glad he's not letting recent events control him. Healing will probably take some time, but he's one step closer now at least.
"Hold on, hold on, you lost an eye? And just healed it right back up?" He almost shouts, utterly incredulous as the words I've spoken finally register.
"Yup." I say, "Bidleid jammed his finger into my eyesocket and ripped the old thing out. It would've been slightly better if he hadn't had those jagged gauntlets on."
He looks at my currently in-tact eyes, his mouth slightly agape.
"I know we've already established you're a cockroach, but holy shit you might actually give the Phenex a run for their money. You sure you aren't related?"
"Heh, if you think that's impressive wait until you hear about how I was almost eaten alive by bees!"
He now looks utterly disgusted after I say that.
------------------------------------
If I had to describe Lilith in one word, I'd struggle. It's beautiful, jaw-dropping, gargantuan, any syllable that applies. The city itself is utterly massive, the closest thing to a mega-city I've ever laid eyes on. I can only imagine Lucifaad is even bigger.
Thousands upon thousands of bespoke, modern looking buildings, the smaller ones clearly very hastily put together to house all the Clans that had joined arms with the Satanihilus.
It's a mix of everything. Workplaces, residential areas, markets, anything I can think of. I can only imagine how it will look after the war ends.
Oh, and how can I forget the sky-piercing High Court? It's astonishing, I'd almost think it came from the Vatican if it weren't for the Satanic paraphernalia dotted around the gargantuan building.
A beautiful gothic skyscraper. Several hundred floors, several thousand rooms, and only a single court, where I'll soon be doing my best to not piss off the Clan Heads of the Underworld because of my blood.
And to top it all off, a faint blue barrier surrounding the whole city, keeping the people inside safe and allowing some semblance of normalcy for the residents. Falbium, you may not have much of a personality, but you certainly have style.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Sirzechs says from my left, the both of us being escorted towards the High Court by members of the Satanihilus.
"Certainly. I've never laid eyes on anything like it." He laughs.
"The High Court was built with the idea of spiting Christianity in mind. We took their beloved chapels, their cathedrals, and made them our own, besmirched the Holy aspect."
He sighs.
"I only wish they'd gone a bit lighter on all the floors. Since we can't teleport, the elevator rides are so boring. And cramped."
Again, what the hell is wrong with the Underworld's technology? Sometimes I think they live in the 1100s, then they come out and say 'yeah we have elevators'.
"You can't really appreciate the spectacle from down here. It's astonishing when you see it from above. Used to be even bigger, too. I heard they were running out of space before the Great War."
As we walk through the infested streets, hundreds of Devils turning their heads and bowing to Sirzechs, I can't help but wonder just how different history would be if the Great War hadn't happened.
Who knows. Maybe I could've been reincarnated then instead. Maybe I would've been one of the hundreds of millions who died. Probably, considering literal fucking dragons were a part of it.
[Consider yourself lucky, User! Some of your fellow Reincarnates have not been!]
The message leaves me feeling slightly hollow in the chest, my eyes fixed on it for a reason I can't understand.
"Oi, you still with me?" Sirzechs says, lightly whacking my shoulder to get my attention.
"You keep doing that, you know?" He starts, "Sometimes your eyes just glaze over and it's like you're not there anymore."
Huh. I always wondered how I looked when I was deep in the system.
"Apologies. I lose focus easily." I lie with no hesitation, because while I'm willing to talk about my healing, my 'Clan Trait' and my own feelings, I will never breathe a word of the System to anyone.
"Well, make sure you don't do it in front of the High Council." I frown, already not liking how rigid and uptight I'll have to be by the sounds of things.
"Ah, the High Council. I can't wait. If there's one thing I'm a natural at, it's kissing ass to old, withered Devils." He laughs.
"Good, you're already about 50 percent of the way to making it big in the Underworld!"
A few minutes more of easy conversation pass, where I learn about Sirzechs' own family and how they play into the war. His father, not much of a combatant, chose to take a seat on the Council while his wife fought on the frontlines.
I'd call him a coward if his wife wasn't an absolute menace. Either Sirzechs is a momma's boy and can't speak ill of her, or she's a sleeper pick on the 'most powerful devils' list.
Granted, the top 7 are pretty much automatically filled out so I wouldn't call her a sleeper- the point is the same, she's strong and he clearly thinks highly of her.
Finally though, after an incredibly long walk and hours spent touring the Underworld, we arrive at the main entrance to the High Court.
The Satanihilus guard we'd have the whole time fan out and leave as a woman dressed like the most and least stereotypical receptionist I've ever seen walks in. I'd say she's pretty typical if it weren't for the gigantic bust and cleavage she's showing.
What the actual fuck. I'd almost forgotten, so enamored with Grayfia and so focused on mending my relationship with Serafall, but these women have utterly unfair bodies.
"If you'll follow me, I can lead you to a room that you can stay in for tonight. After that, the High Council with be expecting you in the Courtroom at 2PM Tomorrow." She says.
I've barely said a word, and they've already got me a room and a schedule.
"This is where we part ways." Sirzechs says shortly after, a hand on my shoulder.
"I'll be in the Courtroom tomorrow, but until then you'll be without me. Feel free to cry and tell me how much you'll miss me."
Silence. Utter, deafening silence. I think I actually heard a grasshopper.
"Right. I'll just uh, I'll be going now." He moves to leave, but suddenly comes back and stands dead ahead of me.
A smile, and an offered hand is all that greets me.
"It was nice to meet you, Alistair. I think... of all the horrible people in the Underworld it could've been, I'm glad she chose you."
I can see how it pains him to say that. How his eyes crinkle slightly. But I can also see how each word brings a weight off his chest, like he's coming to terms with it. Piece by piece, step by step, he moves forward.
I don't hesitate to shake his hand, and resolve myself to help him fix his broken heart.
Companion Quest: Devilish Wingman has been issued.
"The pleasure was mine, General. And thank you. I know that must've hurt to say."
He doesn't respond, leaving shortly after. I'm glad he's still able to smile. Makes me feel less guilty about everything that happened.
"Sir, if you'll follow me?" The guide says, breaking my train of thought, and even I can see how it hurts her slightly to call a half-devil Sir as I look at her.
"Of course. Lead the way."
------------------------------------
The first thing I do when I finally get to my room is try and send a transmission to Grayfia. It holds for a few seconds, as if she's hesitant, but then she answers.
"Before you say anything, would you have answered if I told you Sirzechs would be on the other end?"
"...No. I understand why you did that, but please. A warning next time is all I ask for."
She seemingly sighs into the caster, and I can hear the small shrieks of Alduin not far behind as she does so.
"I understand that our... arrangement is unnatural, and that many things have been left unspoken about it, but all I have is one request."
"Trust in me. Whatever plans you may have, whatever fears you may hold or thoughts you may wish to share. I promise to be there for all of it. So please, trust in me and my ability to serve you, Master."
"Of course. I'm sorry for not doing so sooner, Grayfia."
"It is forgiven, Master." I can't help but sigh as I lean back on this shit bed I've been given, the exhaustion from today's events finally catching up to me.
"I think I'll take you up on that offer to share my thoughts. Today has been... one hell of a mixed bag, all things considered."
"Then I shall be here with you as you do."
"I had to fight Serafall again. She damn near killed me, too, but I'm almost certain now she's willing to give you a chance. How far that chance extends I'm not sure, but at the very least she was sympathetic to you."
My hand quickly finds itself on my head, rubbing away the stress.
"I also met Sirzechs today. I thought he'd wind up killing me over you, but he was... he was really kind. I think we're actually friends now, or at least something on the way to it."
To my surprise, Grayfia speaks up suddenly.
"I'm glad to hear that. Though I may not love him anymore, I do still believe him to be a good man. He deserves to have the happiness that I can no longer give him."
A few hours pass in the blink of an eye, my voice slightly hoarse from all the talking I've done recently. After a few words to Alduin, mainly just so he remembers I exist, I cut the transmission and get to the real meat and potatoes.
Harbingers gone, for now. Fine. Why not try get something new in my Gacha Pulls? After Stat Distribution, of course.

Well I'll be damned. Gacha is finally viable. I only wish I'd invested in LUK more sooner. Then again, not all EX items are good. Looking at you, Talon Of Horus, useless bloody thing.
Maybe I'll use it one day to kill someone I don't like. Some guy whose politically immune, put the Talon on them and bang, corrputed, now I've got an excuse to do them in.
...that's a fucking stupid idea. Then the Chaos would just spread through them instead of me. Moving on.
Skill Token Used!
Skill Token Used!
Skill Token Used!
Skill Token Used!
Skill Token Used!
Nothing, absolutely nothing. A shame that my EX guarantees don't translate over to Skill Tokens. At least I can now accurately measure distances with the naked eye. That is, literally, the only decent Skill I got.
Gacha Pull Used!
Thorn (EX):
A hand cannon for those of exotic taste, this revolver fires giant thorns that will pierce into a target and Poison them, the damage for this Poison scaling with the User's INT. Cylinders for this weapon can be created at an exchange rate of 120MP per 9 round cylinder. As opposed to the original, this alternate version will not corrupt the User.
Fucking hell, that is one long descri- there's more!?
Mark of the Devourer: User can consume the souls of those slain with Thorn to empower the weapon and the User temporarily. Devouring a Soul grants a stackable 10% boost to all Stats and reloads Thorn for free, the boost and empowerment lasting for 7 seconds.
Holy shit this might be the single best Gacha Pull I've had so far. This isn't even up for discussion, this is absolutely the best. An infinite ammo hand cannon.
And fuck me is hand cannon an apt way of describing it, this thing is massive, weighty, and most importantly a bloody menace on the eyes. Jagged purpose indeed, this thing would probably cut me if I held it wrong.
...I'm not exactly sure how much of a crime against the world it is to 'consume' a soul, but I've no doubt it's going to make some people incredibly weary of me. Oh well, that just means I get a permanent 10% boost from the boon of Nezarec.
The rest of the Gacha is utterly abysmal, a new pair of sandals being the only standout, but I'm too giddy with my new Thorn to care. What better offhand weapon is there than a bloody revolver?
And the synergy with Caduceus, too... oh, it's just written in the stars!
Level 120 Intrinsic Skill:
Plaguefather: Caduceus will now extend the severity and duration of all Status Effects on successful hits.
I'm a regular old cowboy. Granted, I'm a cowboy who can now eat people's souls, but I reckon that's just what I do whenever I gain EXP from killing someone anyway.
No matter what may come of tomorrow, at least I can smile knowing I'm getting better at gambling.
Ohohoho, I cannot fucking wait to use this thing!
