I walked into Coach Thompson's office, trying to appear confident. But inside, I was nervous. My brain that went on a short break finally returned, I now had a plan to get out of this, it wasn't one of my best plans but at least it was something. Coach Thompson was a tall, imposing figure with a thick, gruff voice to match his rugged exterior. His bald head gleamed with a subtle sheen of sweat, and his piercing brown eyes seemed to bore into me.
"Jeremy, I've known Ethan for years," Coach Thompson said, his voice firm. "He's not into sports. He's a bookworm."
I smirked. That's exactly what I wanted him to think. I've always been good at school without using much effort. My superior intellect helped me a lot in this regard. I don't know why I even let my guard down now. Oh I remember why now. Emily. Why did this girl even come from and how is she messing with me? I've met a lot of Beautiful girls in my life and none could mess with my head the way Emily does. More reasons why I should avoid her.
"But Coach, you have to see him run!" Jeremy protested. "He's incredible!"
The coach raised an eyebrow. "I've seen him run, Jeremy. He's average at best."
"Alright let's try this." Jeremy Started. "Set him up with some of our racers and check out what he can do."
"Jeremy, this better be worth my time." The coach said. "You can see I'm busy here."
"I know"
"Alright. I'll come." Coach Thompson said. "Are you ready to show me what you can do Ethan?"
I nodded, trying to appear nonchalant. Jeremy led us to the track. I had already devised a plan, come in last place and get Jeremy and Mr Thompson off my back but as I stepped out onto the track, I saw Emily still waiting for me, and my brain decided to go get an ice cream, leaving me all alone. The truth was that, even my subconscious wanted to impress her and as shocking as it may seem, coming in last place will do the opposite of impressing a girl.
The coach set me up with some of the first team's racers but the race was over seconds after it began. The gap between the team and I was so massive that the rest of the team stopped running halfway because they knew it was pointless trying to catch up. It was funny because I was actually holding back. If I had run at my top speed Mr. Thompson would've no doubt called the CIA to run tests on me to check for alien D.N.A. or stuff like that. As I caught my breath, I saw Ava approaching me, a look of annoyance on her face. I knew I was in trouble. I quickly grabbed Emily's hand and asked, "Want to get out of here?"
I knew I couldn't run away forever, I was only delaying the inevitable. I better enjoy this little detour before Ava staked my heart with a fork.
Emily and I took off, escaping from Ava and the coach's prying eyes. I showed Emily around the city, laughing and having fun until the sun dipped below the horizon.
But our tranquility was short-lived. A group of robbers approached us, demanding money.
"Hand over your wallets and phones," one of them growled.
I tried to reason with them. "Guys, there's no need for this. We don't have much money on us."
But they grew violent, beating me and Emily to the ground. They started kicking me continuously. I just laid down there and collected all the kicks. They'll get tired eventually and besides the injuries will be gone by morning, injuries don't last up to a day on my body. Emily got worried for me and started punching the men. The man that she was punching got annoyed and hit her head with the crowbar he was holding. She fell down and became unconscious.
Seeing her unconscious on the floor with blood trickling out of the wound they just inflicted on her made me lose it. I didn't mind them hitting me because all the injuries inflicted on me would be gone before you could say "Jack Robinson" but she was different. She was just a human. She could feel pain for longer periods of time. I sprang to my feet, my movements lightning-fast.
The first robber swung at me, but I dodged the punch with ease. I countered with a swift kick to the stomach, followed by a punch to the jaw. The robber crumpled to the ground. Punches from a normal sixteen year old shouldn't have this much effect on a grown man but i wasn't a normal sixteen year old.
Seeing how fast I dispatched the first person, the second robber tried to run, but I caught him in mid-air, slamming him to the ground. My strength was incredible, and the robber struggled to free himself, I just flicked my finger on his forehead and he went to sleep. Not sleep like a good night type of sleep, but you know what I mean.
The third robber pulled out a knife, but I disarmed him with ease, twisting his wrist until he cried out in pain. I hit his neck and he collapsed on the floor.
In a matter of seconds, the robbers were lying on the ground, unconscious. I stood over them, my chest heaving with exertion. To me it was a normal fight but in human time, the fight lasted for roughly 10 seconds. Could've been less if I wasn't holding back. I've made it a habit of holding back when fighting humans because if I don't, there'll be a lot of dead bodies.
I sat down beside Emily, waiting for her to wake up. When she finally stirred, she looked up at me, confused.
"What happened?" she asked.
I smiled, trying to appear calm. "Just a few guys trying to rob us. I took care of them."
Emily's eyes widened as she took in the scene around her. "Ethan, how did you...?"
I shrugged, trying to downplay my actions. "Just lucky, I guess. I think it's time I got you home."
"Yeah I'd like that."
I bent down and cleaned the blood off the injuries on her forehead before carrying her on my back. We arrived in front of her house a few minutes later.
"Thank you." Emily said before proceeding towards her door. She stopped and turned around. "How did you know where I lived though?"
Damn... I knew I was forgetting something. I didn't know her house yet, so how did I take her there. Brain come on, don't fail me now. My life depends on this.
"You told me your address." I said this as calmly as I could, happy that my brain finally helped me out. "Maybe the hit to your head scrambled your memories a bit. Just rest a bit. We'll talk later."
I walked away slowly but sensed that she was staring at me. My brain left me again and I forgot how to walk. I tripped over nothing and stumbled before regaining my footing. Emily chuckled after seeing this before moving inside.
I stood in front of my door. I've delayed this for as long as I can but now I have to face Ava. The advising session that she's going to give me today would definitely make me wish that she just put the fork in my heart and put me out of my misery.
Well, here goes.
I opened the door and walked inside.
