Adriel's hand hovered over the lamp switch again. He flicked it off, then on. Off. On. It buzzed once, then stopped flickering. A moment of triumph settled in his chest—before the floorboards creaked. His heart skipped a beat.
"Well, that's nothing weird. It happens sometimes..." he muttered, but his legs stayed glued to the couch, daring not to move an inch. His hearing sharpened as he listened for any sounds.
Someone was walking in the hallway. Too close to his front door.
Adriel swallowed hard, the cord to the lamp twisted tight around his fingers. "Okay, nope. I'm not doing this." He stood up, planning to put on some music to distract himself from the creeping unease.
The moment he took a step, the doorbell rang. Adriel nearly jumped up to the ceiling. If he were a cat, the fur on his back would stand straight. His face flushed with embarrassment as he hurried to the door.
