Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

The Nameless Wolf:

"What is your name?" The pack doctor, who I learned was called Bianca, asked. She smiled as she tended to my wounds, careful as she tried her best not to hurt me. I did my best not to flinch.

I didn't respond. I couldn't respond. It was a question that killed me inside. Admitting that I had no name.

"Don't be afraid, no one is going to hurt you." She said, assuring me, her voice softening as she did.

"I don't have a name." I said, looking down at my burned hand. I couldn't even dare think of what was to happen to me if he ever saw me, if anyone from the pack would ever to see me. I would have been long dead before I could think of saying a word.

"What do you mean?" She asked, letting out a low laugh. "Everyone has a name."

I didn't respond as I kept my eyes on her hand. She froze, realizing that I was being serious. "Oh, dear."

I smiled and looked up at her, watching as her eyes met mine. It was on rare occasions when anyone would be willing to look me in the eye. Mostly, I was forced to look down at everyone's feet, and as if on impulse, I looked down, avoiding her eyes.

"Is there a reason why they didn't give you a name?" She asked, going back to whatever she was doing. Again, I didn't respond.

How would one say that they were bastards who were born of a rape? Not even a mistake of love, no. A daughter of an affair? No. I was a rape's daughter, one who my mother remembered whenever she looked at me.

"What did they call you in your pack?" She asked, changing the subject, realizing that I wasn't willing to speak.

"Runt," I said, lowering my voice to above a whisper. "Sometimes they would call me bitch, others, when they were kind, they would say 'YOU'."

She nodded in understanding before she went back to wrapping my hand with a strap. It burned, and it took everything in me not to flinch as she finished what she was doing. She had the other nurses taking care of the other wounds that I had on my body. They hurt, a lot, but I knew better than to complain. If anything, I had to be thankful for their effort. Had I been at the pack, I would have had to endure the pain alone. Not only that, but not working because I couldn't use my hand was not going to be an option.

"I am going to send you a few medicines to your room. You are going to need to apply them on your cuts and bruises. For the burn that you have on your hand, I am going to need you to come to me in two days to change the strap that's on your hand." She said, and I frowned.

"But I am not going to be here in two days. I am going to…"

"I am going to need you to stay here, little one." She said, stopping me. I frowned at the gentle nickname that she gave me, and she smiled. "The wound that's on your hand needs careful taking care of. I can't just leave it like that."

"I can take care of…"

"Please." She said, stopping me. "This is not a normal injury that you can just take care of. It's going to be hard for you to maintain and handle it on your own without getting infected. I am also going to need to make sure to monitor your fever and how your body reacts to the medicine that I am going to be giving you."

"Medicine?" I asked, and she nodded.

"You will need to eat something, then I'll have the nurses bring the antibiotics to you after doing so. You are going to have to take them. They would make you sleepy and somewhat drowsy, but they would help with ensuring that you don't end up getting sick." She said, making my eyes well up with tears. She froze, not saying a word for a moment before she gave me a box of tissues. I looked at them and she sat on the edge of the bed by my side. She put her hand on my knee, gently squeezing it, careful not to hurt me as she did. "You are safe, little one. Here, everyone is safe. Alpha Vladimir would not allow anyone to harm you."

She looked at the door, and hearing footsteps by it, I looked up to find the Alpha walking inside. His eyes met her and she nodded before getting up from the bed. I looked at the Alpha for a moment and he smiled as he approached me. "How is she?"

"She is going to need to rest. She can sleep out of the infirmary, but I'll be checking on her later tonight. There would be nurses that would give her an antibiotic that I am prescribing for her and the ointments that she has to put on her wounds are going to be sent to her as well." She said, and the Alpha nodded. She turned to face me, and she smiled. "You must eat before taking your medication. And if you feel tired, just go to bed. You need to do minimum activities as you recover. But I am sure that things are going to be alright when you do."

"And her hand?" The Alpha asked, taking me off guard with his concern.

"It was badly burned. I did the best that I could, but it would need a while before it healed. My main concern right now is the fact that I don't want it getting infected. Otherwise, she is going to be alright." She said, and Alpha Vladimir nodded.

She nodded at both the Alpha and I before she turned to the door, leaving the room, leaving me and the Alpha.

His eyes met mine and he smiled before he sat on the chair where the doctor was working as he faced me. I looked down at my lap, avoiding his eyes, fearing that he would be angry because I dared meet his gaze.

"How are you feeling?" He asked, taking me off guard as he did. I looked up at him and he smiled. "I know that Bianca said that she did what she could, but how are YOU feeling?"

"I am fine, thank you, Alpha." I said, not looking at the man. My heart raced against my ribcage and when he extended his hand, I closed my eyes, bracing for whatever he was going to do. However, I couldn't help but find myself frowning in confusion when his touch never came. In fact, the Alpha didn't even move.

"I am not going to hurt you." He said, his voice so gentle that a crying baby would have calmed down. "I just wanted to raise your face for your eyes to meet mine."

"I am not allowed to look into an Alpha's eyes, I am not worthy of that," I said, and he frowned in confusion.

"Why not?" He asked, taking me back by his question. He must have been playing with me. There was no way for him to just be asking me such a question randomly.

"I am not of your rank, Alpha." I said, and he raised an eyebrow.

"I doubt that you would think that I am that much of a fool." He said as his eyes hardened. "Do you really expect me to be fooled by…?"

"I am not taking you for a fool, Alpha." I said, shaking my head as I found myself flinching, wanting to move away from him. "I am not taking you for a fool, I swear it."

"Hey," he lowered his voice, growing confused at my state. "Hey, I'm sorry, don't worry, you're safe."

He extended his hand toward me, but stopped when he saw me bracing myself for an impact to come, a slap, punch, or his fingers wrapping around my chin as he forced me to look at him.

He drew his hand back, straightening as he studied my expression before he nodded as a small smile formed on his lips. The smile didn't reach his eyes, and if I couldn't help but find myself noticing a small glimpse of pain in his gaze.

"Do you want to go and see your room?" He asked, choosing to change the topic. "Bianca said that you can stay somewhere other than the infirmary, do you want to go and see the room?"

I ran my fingers over the hospital bed. It was a lot more comfortable than the haystack and thin mattress that I called my bed back at the pack. I didn't want to leave this bed for another haystack.

"I am comfortable here, Alpha." I said, and he raised an eyebrow.

"I doubt that you would be on a bed like this one?" He asked, and I looked down at my lap. "How about we make a deal?"

"A deal?" I asked, and he smiled.

"I show you the room, if you don't like it, we can come back to the infirmary, how about it?" He asked, making me smile. I nodded and he got up from the chair before extending a hand to me. "Well them, how about we show you your new room…?"
