Back from the market, Ballister pushed the kitchen door open with a soft creak and walked inside. He saw Griselda holding the little girl closely, and the young boy smiled. He decided to turn back to give them some space, but his plan was ruined when Chaos ran into the kitchen.
"Ballister, why did you leave me all alone!" Chaos huffed, trying to catch his breath, throwing the large rice sack he had used to pack fruits and grains onto the table, startling Layla.
Ballister raised his finger to his lips, "Shush! You'll scare the girl."
"What about me? I'm scared too! Who's going to protect me? That crazy girl said she'd gouge my eyes out if I ever glared at her again. I'm terrified of that red-haired monster!" Chaos whined, stomping his feet on the ground.
Iva entered the kitchen, dropping the sacks of vegetables. Now wearing a cleaner shirt, she leaned against the door. "Did someone say a red-haired monster?"
