Jacquelyn wished she hadn't stepped out of her room. Just seeing the woman's face alone made her realize how the rest of the day was going to unfold. With the same pointed look and strict expression, Jacquelyn couldn't believe she hadn't been afraid of the woman the first time they'd met. She had only acted bravely because it was her first time seeing someone else aside from Grisie. But now that she had met other people, she was very much afraid of the woman standing in front of her.
Jacquelyn inhaled deeply, starting her explanation. She placed her hands behind her. "I was going to come around but—"
The harsh strike of the woman's cane on the marble floor sent shivers down Jacquelyn's spine, causing the hair on her neck to rise. For a moment, she thought the woman was about to hit her with the cane.
