Fu Shinian arrived at the hospital at three in the afternoon, and Qiao Yu had been waiting for him in the office. Upon seeing him enter, he lazily glanced at him:
"I thought you weren't going to show up."
Almost three hours had passed since he had called him.
Fu Shinian paid him no heed, and sat down in front of him, speaking:
"Where is she?"
"She's been moved from the operating room to a general ward."
Fu Shinian's hand paused while flipping through a medical book: "Surgery?"
Even though he had been somewhat excessive the night before, he clearly remembered not having caused her such serious harm.
Qiao Yu already knew from his expression that Fu Shinian was completely unaware of Su Mu's pregnancy, he sighed, stopped writing the medical record, and looked at him:
"Su Mu was pregnant, did you know that?"
Fu Shinian's brow furrowed.
"What are you, some kind of freak? Did you see the bruises on Su Mu's body? She's your wife, not one of those women out there. If I hadn't stopped him, Jiang Bei would have called the police the moment he saw Su Mu. Even I couldn't help but suspect you have some unmentionable fetish when I saw those injuries. If you really dislike Su Mu that much, just get a divorce. You've already got what you wanted, why keep her hanging? It's causing both of you agony, what's the point?"
Fu Shinian looked at him: "Is this righteous indignation because you feel sorry for her? What is it? You've got your eye on her? Hoping I get a divorce so you can take over?"
"Damn you!" Qiao Yu could not help but curse: "If you continue like this, Su Mu will eventually cheat on you."
Fu Shinian fell silent for a few seconds:
"How is she doing now?"
"Do you really need me to tell you? Don't you have any idea? Miscarriage, lacerations, bruises all over, what do you think?"
After leaving Qiao Yu's office, Fu Shinian didn't immediately go to the ward but instead went to a smoking area in the emergency stairwell, where he quietly lit a cigarette. However, he didn't take a single puff, just holding it between his fingers until it burned down to his fingers, only then did he seem to come back to his senses and snuffed it out.
When he pushed open the door to the ward, Fu Shinian was surprised to see that Su Mu wasn't lying in bed but was instead propping up her body that had just undergone surgery and rummaging through a bag someone had placed there by the sofa.
When she heard the noise, she looked up, paused for a moment, but said nothing. She wasn't angry either and continued with what she was doing.
Fu Shinian walked over:
"What are you looking for?"
"My phone." After Su Mu said this and took out her phone from the bag, she was startled to find that Fu Shinian was already standing behind her. She reflexively took a step back, bumping into a low table behind her, and with her body already pushing its limits, she fell to the ground like a leaf falling from its branch.
Fu Shinian didn't expect to startle Su Mu, and reflexively reached out to help her, but the limited space between the sofa and the coffee table did little to prevent the fall. He merely ended up cushioning her descent.
Initially without much concern, it was only in the moment she fell to the floor that Fu Shinian suddenly remembered something. He didn't even take time to check if Su Mu was injured, forgetting she had just had surgery. He hastily pushed her away, stood up, and took something out of his pocket to examine it carefully.
As Su Mu lay on the cold floor, she watched Fu Shinian examine his crystal keychain as if it were his most treasured possession, feeling a wave of desolation.
She recognized that object. It was a gift from Qin Nianwan, Fu Shinian's most beloved woman, which he had carried with him for years, unwilling to part with it, as if his heart hadn't forgotten that woman for a single second.
