Chapter 16 - Crossbows

____________________

Name: Weeping Boltcaster

Rarity: Forbidden

Grade: Forbidden

Rank: Forbidden

Description: A crossbow that ignores distance and evasion. No matter how far the target is, as long as it's within the crossbow's sight, the bolt will always hit the Locked Target within ten seconds.

The further the target, the stronger the impact. Anyone within the sight can be marked as a Locked Target for a short period of time, but enemies hit within 7 to 10 seconds distance away will be marked as Locked Targets for a long period of time. Once the target is locked, they can be detected wherever they are and can be hit when shot even without pointing at them directly.

Jax stared at the weapon description of his crossbow. For a few moments, he rubbed his chin gently, a smile was surfacing triumphantly on his lips, thinking of how great it was.

Since he had that weapon "equipped", he could summon and dismiss it whenever he wanted without retrieving the Scroll Inventory.

But the best part was that it had a skill of its own that he could use as freely as he wanted.

Sadly, it was also a Forbidden type, just like his ability. Jax learned from the Scroll that Forbidden types were the type that could grow using sacrifices. That being said, it was at its weakest. He needed a lot of effort to make it grow stronger, and he also needed to figure out how he could achieve that.

Perhaps it also needed souls?

Jax sighed. He waved his hand and the crossbow disappeared with a thought. Then, looking back at the Scroll, he said, ''Take out, Weapon Mystery Box.''

Poof!

Since he planned to use the two remaining mystery boxes this time, he ordered the Scroll to bring it out.

A cube of white gem suddenly appeared in midair. The borders of each face of the cube were pure white, leaving all the rest a semi-transparent opacity. Inside and in the middle of the cube was a small orb of white light, as if it was a form of energy locked up there.

Jax grabbed the box, its size barely filling up his grasp. He stared at it for a few moments, and with a faint excited smile, he ordered, ''Open.''

Suddenly, the Weapon Mystery Box emitted a dazzling white glow. Still, Jax didn't take a blink, eager to see every change that would happen to the glowing white box.

The Weapon Mystery Box then rose into the midair. It remained suspended for a short moment before a crack finally appeared.

The crack then soon grew, shattering the box like broken glass that splattered on the ground below. What only remained was the small orb of light suspended in the midair, emitting a dazzling glow that seemed to attract attention.

Then, after another moment, another change came into view. The small bead of light appeared to resemble formless water. It slowly shaped into something until finally, the weapon that Jax anticipated, surfaced.

''This...'' Jax's eyes constricted, a cold breath gasped out of his mouth. The weapon slowly came down from the midair, as he raised his hands to catch it.

''What the hell...'' Jax muttered, a mix of disbelief and astonishment filled his eyes. ''The Scroll must be joking...''

As ridiculous as it was, in his hands was another crossbow. Although this time, it was smaller and a one-handed type weapon, a light crossbow.

Jax forced out a smile, but the corners of his lips couldn't help but twitch. He held the crossbow with his right hand and tried to aim at the nearby tree.

''A light crossbow, huh? Am I a fan of crossbow?'' Jax muttered, still shaking his head slowly in disbelief. Two crossbows in a row... Was his luck that good?

Jax stared at the light crossbow in his hand. But his luck aside, the design of this thing was simply begging for attention. It had no scope, but in exchange for that was something like the head of a golden snake placed at the end of the flight groove. Its body frame also looked like the body of a venomous snake, full of scales, displaying both angelic and beastly beauty.

Its limbs were also full of golden scales, and its golden bow string seemed to resemble a form of energy. No matter how Jax looked at it, this thing simply displayed the touch of extraordinary.

More than that, it felt like it weighed no more than air. He swiped it left and right, up and down, and he realized that he wouldn't struggle at all moving this little thing. It felt like the weapon was also a part of his hand.

Tempted to see the description, he stared at the light crossbow as he spoke, ''Weapon description.''

A small paper note then appeared floating above the weapon. Jax grabbed the paper note as he started reading it.

Name: Whimpering Repeater

Rarity: Forbidden

Grade: Forbidden

Rank: Forbidden

Description: A one-handed weapon designed for short range attacks and rapid firing. This light crossbow can be reloaded automatically as bolts can simply appear in its flight groove by consuming your energy. It can also multiply its bolts after being fired, raining down to annihilate multiple enemies at the same time.

Bolts loaded on this light crossbow can also cause a small explosion that can knock back and slow enemies and inflict bleed and/or burn.

''Woah, what a... badass weapon...'' Jax gasped in surprise. His hands began shaking as he held the light crossbow like a priceless treasure. The way he saw the weapon now completely turned around.

Since his first crossbow was designed for long-range attack, it should be a good thing to also have a weapon for short-range attack, right? Although this light crossbow wasn't the melee weapon he expected, its description was just too powerful for him to ignore.

With its knock-back and slow effect, even if he had to fight at close quarters as the enemies closed in, he wouldn't get too cornered or would fall on a very disadvantageous situation. After all, he could simply use the weapon's ability to recover distance.

When fighting at close range, he could use this Whimpering Repeater, and when the enemies tried to gain distance or run away, he could simply switch back weapon and use his Weeping Boltcaster.

A combination of these two weapons would definitely create a very good synergy. One would cover the weakness of the other, and the same would go for the other way around.

''Yea, I think it's not bad to have another crossbow...'' Jax nodded his head after some thought and realization. ''Alright, I'll try to use this later. Right now, I should check the last remaining mystery box first.''

After he said that, Jax dismissed the Whimpering Repeater and put it in his Scroll Inventory. After that, he retrieved the last remaining Weapon Mystery Box from the Scroll Inventory and opened it.

Just like before, a dazzling light came into view when he opened the mystery box. The bead of light remained suspended in the midair as, after a few moments, it slowly shaped into something else.

Jax held his breath. He swallowed a mouthful of saliva, thinking about what kind of weapon would appear this time.

Sword, sword, sword. Dagger, dagger, dagger. Axe, axe, axe. Spear, spear, spear. Jax whispered all types of melee weapons as though he was chanting. He really wished to receive a melee weapon this time.

The bead of light then finally revealed the shape of the weapon it wanted to give Jax. On the other hand, Jax had his eyes widened completely. His hands began shaking, he shook his head slowly as though he had seen something unreal.

''What the hell...? Is this for real...?'' Jax murmured as he struggled to restrain his emotion anymore. He forced out a smile, but his lips just couldn't help twitching violently. Even his eyebrows also began twitching. Veins also bulged out of his forehead and fists.

In the end, Jax failed to control himself. He held his breath for a few moments before he finally bellowed, ''Another crossbow??? WHAT KIND OF JOKE IS THIS?!!''

***

Meanwhile, a certain young man was watching the occurrence from a distance. His face remained expressionless, watching Jax with a growing sense of curiosity and astonishment.

It was, of course, King. One could easily see the seriousness from the heavy atmosphere around him. Even till now, he still found it hard to believe what he had seen.

''Weapon Mystery Box...'' King muttered as he narrowed his eyes for a moment. ''Where did he get those things? And how can it possibly produce Forbidden weapons consecutively?''

King could tell with just a glance that those weapons that Jax revealed were Forbidden weapons, something that could grow stronger using sacrifices. And no matter how he thought about it, for that type of weapon to appear like it was a Common rarity was something he never once imagined.
