Chapter 31 - The Deceiver Shall Be Deceived

 ⦗Reward: Destiny Points + 200⦘

Requiem clothed the slaves, but he left the tied to the trees. They pleaded to be released, and he assured them that they would gain freedom — Requiem chuckled — once he decided if they weren't pawns ready to be planted in his force.

For that, he would have Yver's Avatar assess them. He trusted her abilities more than having the slaves wait here in hopes that they would suddenly transform into massive beasts or not. Besides, "I hate kills that are too easy. They always come with trouble."

Requiem crouched down to the ground. He had not faced the biggest bad yet, and even if he had earned the quest rewards he still felt uneasy. Remaining in his crouched position, the coldness of the night began to eat into in exposed skin and he sighed.

His nose was terrible, or he would have bet on the chances of sniffing out the calamity hiding in this cold stale air. He stood to his feet, picking up his sword and turning around to face Ryelir, "There are some issues we would need to clarify first. Let's start with this first one… Where are my slaves?"

He had left them back to deal with the monsters, but ever since then no one had come to meet up with him. Requiem wondered why they had difficulty in defeating those monsters and the thought of the entire group getting wiped out crossed his mind, "Not possible…"

Requiem spared a glance at the pleading slaves, then the forest behind him. He clenched his fists, and clicked his tongue. Picking up Ryelir like a rag doll, he burst into a sprint until he crashed into an evading slave, knocking all three over and unto the ground.

The chasing demon cleaved with its blade, but a fist connected with its face and demon was sent flying in a distance. Requiem pushed Ryelir off his body, standing to his feet to thank his saviour. All had happened in an instant, but he was really grateful, "Thanks, Gerald."

Gerald nodded, his gaze shifting to the abominations that the others faced. His face twisted and he drew his blade, preparing to fight. Requiem turned in the direction he was looking in, stunned to find the monsters still battling the slaves — all of the 5, well and complete.

"Lord! These beasts refuse to fall!" one of the slaves cried out, his hair soaked in blood. As they staggered away from the monster they ganged up on, he held his sword with one hand and grasped his bleeding abdomen with the other, "All attacks proved fruitless."

Requiem lowered his gaze and as he saw the massive hole dug in the earth, his face darkened. A cold aura erupted from his body as he turned to one of the beasts. He had killed them! The system's notifications had confirmed it! He received their Divine Points! He—

 Wait…

—Those names. Requiem frowned, and the pieces began to connect in his head. He turned with a frown on his face, glaring at one of the monsters then shifting his gaze to another, "Which had I killed with my Chaotic Rift? They look too similar…"

Requiem held his chin, then dashed forward. His muscles ached from all the heavy movements in this suit, and he struggled to breath. Yet, even though he was not built for it, he pushed on, swinging his blade and severing the head of one demon then the next!

He pivoted on his heel, sweeping his feet across the ground as he performed a beautiful spin, his blade swinging in a circle. Heads rolled to the ground, and in an instant, all five demons died. As their death confirmations arrived, Requiem felt his eyes twitch.

"Where is Wormhead and Jafet?" Requiem held his chin. The system notification had only shown him the names Wormhead and Jahfert, and he thought nothing of it. Until now. Requiem watched the decapitated head of one demon begin to regenerate, "Fool."

He stepped forward and crushed it under his feet.

"I am sure of it now!" Requiem shouted out loud and everyone stared at him expectantly. Lifting his gaze to meet their shining eyes, Requiem wanted to facepalm. He sighed softly, "To kill them, you will need to destroy them continuously. Exhaust their energy!"

'More like the souls used to power them!' he withdrew that sentence and kept it to himself, then turned around and stepped away, the blood and flesh of the demon clinging to his boots. When he'd walked away from the monsters, he stopped then turned to face the slaves.

"Ensure that they are wiped off the surface of this Earth!" he shouted.

"Yes, my Lord!" they chorused in reply.

"What do you mean you can't read…" Yver watched Fay, staring down upon the woman before her with a great disdain. Fay dared not stare back, lowering her gaze and focusing her furious eyes on the grass, wishing it burned from the heat and consumed Yver!

"I heard that!" Yver shouted and Fay stiffened up. She waved her hands, and a shelf formed by their sides out of thin air, populated with various books and scrolls. Fay turned to the shelf, and she turned to Yver who smiled, "I can teach it to you."

An arrow flew by, merely an inch away from gazing Yver's bubbling cheeks. Fay's gaze lit up in an instant, and Yver's smile broadened. As Fay turned to the shelf, Yver's expression turned disdainful a moment later. Her big black eyes gleaming as she observed Fay.

"Is that even possible…" Fay stared at all the books with a twinkle in her eyes, reaching towards a few and picking them up to read. Alas, apart from a few words, the rest were merely a shy away from being a collection of runic text from the ancient times, "for me to learn reading…"

Yver withdrew her disdainful frown as Fay turned to her, "Of course! Alas, there is something I'd like you to do for me. I will not only teach you to read, but I will grant you a library of knowledge." A broad grin formed on her face seeing Fay's gleaming eyes staring upon the gateway to a lifetime of knowledge.

"It is quite simple, my dearest friend."
