Synopsis
Aiden is your everyday sort of merman. He is smart, handsome (the works) and totally in love with one human guy. Aiden finally gets the courage to pursue his growing crush after the pod finally reaches the tipping point of a crisis. Unfortunately, rules and reality have it out for him. His secret and very forbidding inter-species relationship could get him cast out of the pod. As Aiden chases his fading chances at love and romance , his tiny world gets so much bigger. He discovers the excitement and pain you get when you put your heart and life on the line. Xander is a (devilishly handsome) human. With his good looks, girls and boys are just waiting to get in bed for a one night stand with him. None of them are really interested in him, none of his partners had ever tried to get to know him. With his family problems at home escalating, he tries to find ways to protect himself and his sister from the aftermath. When he meets Aiden he is one step away reaching his breaking point, he just hopes he doesn’t have to add Aiden to his list of regrets.

Chapter 1 - Your choice is not my choice

Aiden mounted Xander. He directed Xander's thing to his hole. As it slowly pushed past his opening, he grinded his teeth at the pain and discomfort. He was ready, his heart prepared, his body determined and his mind reassured.

A week ago he didn't even have most of these body parts. Now legs replaced his long green tail and he grew what humans called a "butthole".

He didn't intend for any of this to happen. He was happy enough as a merman swimming the blue and green seas, basking in the sand on Starfish Island, but his curiosity got the better of him.

The merman population was on the decline again. The elders were getting worried. Unless something was done quickly they would have to resort to drastic measures. The three elders had a meeting.

Elder Nathan " If this gets any worse we will have to go back to the old way."

Elder Thorm " The humans will hunt us to extinction if we do that."

Elder Nathan " If a few of our men find a fishing boat and then force all of the humans to have sex with them then we can repopulate. Besides we can kill them all after and sink their boat. The stupid humans won't know any better and assume it was caused by a storm."

Elder Owen " Lila would kill us. She would hate the thought of us disposing of her kind after they've lost their use."

Elder Nathan " She's dead. She may have been our mate and gave birth to many of our children, but she can never understand the direness of having her species on the brink of destruction."

Elder Thorm " What if we demand a human like what we did with Lila. Whether male or female, we'll have them give birth to our next generation. We will have some of the young ones mate with the human."

Elder Owen " The human must be treated with respect though, we don't want any trouble."

Elder Thorm " All in favor?"

The other two agreed.

That evening the decision was broadcasted to the entire pod. There would be a negotiation with the humans to get a mate.

All the mermen were excited except for Aiden. He didn't really care about mates.

They were useful for sure, but a lot of work to keep. If his mate got pregnant he would have to look after their emotional state and provide lots of food for them and their baby. At the end of light hours, it would probably be easier for the both of them if he was the one who got pregnant instead of his imaginary mate. He would be capable of providing for himself and would have a mate to help him.

So when he heard that there would be a negotiation for a human bride he lost interest. Those kinds of mates were trouble. If repopulation was the goal then they couldn't become his mate only. More like a shared mate who existed to make babies. That thought pissed him off. He flicked his tail in irritation.

He wanted to consider the amusing possibility a little while longer, but wouldn't catch him any fish. He went back to work on this net.
