Ember paced around the room, her stomach churning with unease about Cedric. She had no choice but to listen to his command, yet she couldn't help but feel that she was somehow failing as his retainer.
The doors swung open, revealing a returning Cedric. He looked the same, without a scratch on him, which made Ember sigh in relief. Cedric walked into his chambers, took off his jacket, and placed it on the couch.
"You look like you aged a few years," said Cedric with a smile. "How about you take the day off?"
"What does that even mean?" asked Ember, confused. "Day off?"
"Oh," Cedric realized that this world might not have the concept of rest. People worked every day just to earn a living. "This reminds me, how much do I pay you?"
