Chapter 2:
-
As the first light of dawn filtered through the gaps in the leaves, I was roused from my slumber by the enthusiastic, slobbery greeting of my familiar Magnus. He eagerly licked my face, effectively ending my peaceful sleep and prompting me to start the day much earlier than I had planned.
As I woke up, I stretched and then made my way to a nearby stream to brush my teeth and wash my face. Afterwards, I headed back to my camp area to prepare a simple breakfast for myself and Magnus.
We ate a modest meal consisting of perfectly boiled eggs. The nourishing sustenance from the eggs provided us with enough energy to power through the upcoming hours. As I let the food digest, I read through the first page of the Magic Book and brought my hand up.
I closed my eyes and envisioned a crackling fire, feeling the heat and seeing the flickering flames in my mind. I concentrated, allowing my magical energy to surge through me, and then I guided it down to my outstretched hand. Gradually, I felt the power coalesce into a glowing, pulsating sphere of fiery energy. But as I struggled to contain it, the ball of fire suddenly erupted into a wild, uncontrollable blaze, slipping from my grasp.
As I struggled to push the fire away, it exploded, and I was forcefully propelled backwards, landing several meters away before I managed to regain my composure. After assessing myself for any injuries, I discovered a minor burn on my hand, which I knew would heal after a good night's rest.
Magnus sat just a few centimetres away from me, his eyes fixed on my every move as I attempted to engage myself in training. I let out a heavy sigh, knowing it was time to start the process all over again. Despite numerous failed sessions, I remained determined and repeatedly summoned my magic.
A few hours of failed sessions later, I stood up, called Magnus to my side, and set out on our journey again, my mind already formulating new plans and alternative approaches to improve my magic control.
As I focused on my magic, I sensed a slight decrease in my magical energy level. I couldn't help but exhale deeply, feeling a wave of relief wash over me. It seems that I have been blessed with an unusually high level of magical capacity.
As we strolled along the cobblestone path, I found myself completely engrossed in the pages of the Magical Book, desperately seeking any insights or techniques that could help me enhance my control over magic.
It's interesting how most people seem to have no trouble controlling their magic. It's as if those with a higher magic capacity start training their bodies to handle magic from a young age. For me, it's a different story. I find myself constantly having to push my body to grow stronger.
With a wry smile, I carefully placed the book back into my bag, knowing that it was time for me to begin from scratch once again. I'm all too familiar with the challenge of forcing my body to grow stronger, and it looks like controlling my magic will be another test of my perseverance.
I needed to dedicate myself to the practice of magic to enhance my mastery and control over it.
As I glanced down at my side, I spotted Magnus walking beside me with a dedicated and attentive gait, prompting a slight smile to grace my lips. "So adorable," I murmured with a chuckle.
As we continued our journey, a sense of foreboding crept over me, emanating from a vague, distant presence. Driven by curiosity, I ventured closer and discovered a cave entrance leading into the depths of the earth. "A natural dungeon," I mused, anticipation lighting up my face. "Let's explore it, Magnus."
Magnus let out a sharp bark of agreement, his tail wagging excitedly as we made our way into the mysterious cave. I struck a match and lit a small torch that I had purchased from the town yesterday. The feeble light barely pierced the suffocating darkness, but it was enough for me to press on. As we delved deeper into the damp, musty cavern, the sound of dripping water and the echo of our footsteps filled the air. It was a thrilling experience, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of curiosity as we explored the broken recesses of the cave.
It wasn't long before the deep rumbling growls of the lurking monster echoed through the cavern, and a menacing symphony of roars erupted from the darkness, reverberating off the cave walls. Despite the ominous sounds, a confident grin spread across my face as I readied myself to confront the formidable creatures and show them who possessed the mightiest punch within this formidable domain.
The first creature to confront me was a bipedal figure illuminated by the small light of my torch. As I focused my eyes, I realized it was an orc. Without hesitation, I swiftly moved towards it, anticipating a close combat confrontation. The vast difference in our strength became apparent as the orc lay defeated at my feet mere seconds after our encounter.
"Come on, Magnus, let's see if we can find anything worth inside this place," I whispered to my companion, and it responded with an enthusiastic bark.
A few minutes of exploration later we made it to the last floor of the dungeon and before us stood a formidable assembly of Nagas, their menacing eyes fixed upon us, weapons at the ready. In that intense moment, an adrenaline-fueled surge coursed through my veins, igniting a fierce, battle-ready spirit within me. I couldn't help but grin with a hint of defiance at the formidable creatures before us.
I drew my sword, feeling the weight of it in my hand as I charged fearlessly towards the oncoming army of the snake-like Nagas. Their scaly bodies glistened in the harsh light as they coiled and hissed, ready to strike. As they lunged towards me all at once, I moved with precision and agility, my blade flashing in the air as I outmanoeuvred the C-Rank creatures with calculated ease.
Despite being outnumbered, I remained focused, my skills and power allowing me to rise above the chaos of the battlefield. Each movement was deliberate, each strike purposeful, as I deftly turned the tide in my favour. With every clash of steel, I proved that I was not just a match for them, but a force to be reckoned with.
Almost an hour after the confrontation, I was seated atop the creatures, my chest heaving as I struggled to catch my breath. With a determined intake of air, I rose to my feet and readied myself to gather the valuable remains of the beasts, carefully stashing them away in my Item Box dimension for safekeeping.
As I was carefully collecting the remains of the defeated monsters, a deep, resonant roar reverberated through the dungeon. My heart quickened as I lifted my gaze, startled by the unexpected sound. "Could this dungeon have a boss?" I pondered.
Before I could dwell on the thought, the ground beneath me trembled violently and then cracked open with a deafening roar. To my astonishment, a colossal Naga Queen burst forth from the earth, her massive, serpentine form coiled with deadly intent. With lightning speed, she launched herself at me, her movements displaying an unhurried grace that belied her immense power. I swiftly realized that evading her relentless assaults was imperative, as her attacks were relentless and incredibly potent.
With a deep breath, I focused my energy and extended my hand, conjuring a massive fireball that crackled with intense heat. I aimed it directly at the menacing monster, causing her to stagger and falter for a precious moment. 'I need to practice more, the fireball wasn't as powerful as the ones that exploded on my face.'
A split second later, I found myself face to face with the Naga, poised to strike with my sword. As I made my move, I quickly discovered two crucial factors. Firstly, the Naga's neck was remarkably resilient, and secondly, my trusty sword, aged by battle scars, was no match for the Naga's tough hide. As the collision occurred, my sword shattered into pieces, leaving the Naga Queen unscathed.
The massive creature let out a deafening roar, its eyes filled with defiance as it readied its spear to launch another attack at me. I met the gaze of the grotesque Naga Queen as she lunged toward me, her spear aimed straight at my heart. In a split second, I sidestepped the lethal strike, seizing the spear and wrenching it out of her grasp before swiftly evading her blind spot.
As the battle raged on, a satisfying squelch filled the air as the creature stumbled and tumbled to the ground. With a glance at the spear now in my hand, I couldn't help but whistle in appreciation, "This is some top-notch gear."
I gazed upon the lifeless form of the Naga, its scales shimmering in the fading light. Feeling a sense of compassion, I uttered a solemn prayer for the departing creature, acknowledging its place in the natural order of things.
I then carefully placed the lifeless form of the Naga into my item box. The exquisite scales and majestic form of the Queen could surely command a substantial fortune if sold to the right buyer.
After defeating the boss, Magnus, who had been watching the fight from a distance, came over to me and affectionately barked in celebration. Together, we made our way out of the dungeon and emerged into the refreshing, open air outside.
As my stomach emitted a growl after making our way out of the dungeon, I glanced skyward and observed the sun inching towards its midday peak. Anticipating the hunger of both myself and my companion, Magnus, I began to ready a meal. My loyal familiar observed with fascination as I skillfully conjured flames and gathered the necessary cooking implements to prepare a satisfying repast for us both.
I carefully retrieved some Red Boar meat from my Item Box, and expertly sliced it into small bite-sized pieces. Then, I skillfully combined the meat with a selection of fresh vegetables to create a delicious stew.
The delightful aroma of the stew filled the forest, wrapping us in a comforting embrace as Magnus and I eagerly began our lunch. With each spoonful, the hearty flavours satisfied our appetites, and we savoured every moment of our meal.
I made sure to take a moment to savour the satisfying feeling of our revitalized stomachs and replenished energy before I gestured to my trusted companion to follow me. We resumed our journey along the winding path, eagerly anticipating our arrival at the next town.
