The scent of damp earth and old memories clung to me as I awoke. My eyes fluttered open to the sight of a stone ceiling, rough and uneven, the kind you'd find in a place long forgotten by the living. I blinked, trying to clear the fog from my mind. The last thing I remembered was... well, I wasn't quite sure. Flashes of my previous life, a life filled with mundane routines and an unremarkable existence, blurred with the edges of a dream I couldn't quite grasp.
I sat up slowly, wincing at the unfamiliar ache in my bones. My hands, now rough and calloused, brushed against the coarse fabric of the clothes I wore. A dark, heavy cloak draped over me, its edges frayed from use. My surroundings came into sharper focus—a small, stone-walled room with a single wooden door slightly ajar, revealing the misty gray of early morning outside.
Standing was an effort, my muscles stiff as if they hadn't been used in years. I shuffled to the door and pushed it open, greeted by the sight of an old graveyard. Rows upon rows of weathered tombstones stretched out before me, each one a silent testament to lives long past. The air was cool, carrying the faint scent of rain and the distant chirping of birds awakening to a new day.
It was then I realized: I wasn't in the world I knew. This place, with its ancient trees and overgrown paths, was something out of the stories I used to read. A fantasy world, where magic and mystery intertwined with the everyday.
And I was its grave keeper.
A figure approached from the mist, an old man with a stooped back and a face etched with lines of time. He carried a lantern, its light flickering softly against the morning gloom. As he neared, his eyes met mine with a knowing look, as if he had been expecting me.
"Welcome," he said, his voice a gravelly whisper. "You have much to learn."
I nodded, the weight of this new reality settling on my shoulders. I was no longer the person I once was, living a life of insignificance. Here, among the dead, I would find my purpose. As a guardian of memories and keeper of secrets, I would uncover the mysteries of this world—and perhaps, in doing so, find out why I was given this second chance.
With a deep breath, I stepped forward, ready to embrace the unknown.
