**Author's POV**
The assistant from the rival company, James, was so happy about everything. He was proud of himself for winning the bid at the last moment. He arrived at his company, parked the car, and looked at the company building. "MORETTI'S" was the company name. He read the name and smiled. He took everything related to the bid and made his way toward the CEO's office.
He got inside the lift and pressed the last floor option. The lift door closed, and after a minute, the lift dinged and the door opened. He stepped out of the lift and knocked on his boss's door. "Come in," came a voice from the other side of the door. He entered inside, and his boss was sitting on the chair facing the wall backward. There was a nameplate that read "LUCAS MORETTI."
James informed Lucas about everything. Lucas studied all the documents carefully, and after making sure everything was correct, he placed them in the safe and locked it with a passcode only he knew. No one else could open it. Then James narrated the story about what happened at the event—how Sebastian's company lost the bid and how angry they were. He told everything, which brought a big smile to Lucas's face.
Lucas rewarded James. After that, he ordered James to prepare for a success party where he wanted to invite everyone from his office staff, his friends, and everyone he knew and who was close to him. James did as Lucas said. James was so happy after being rewarded by his boss that he was on cloud nine.
James prepared everything for the party with the help of his colleagues. He also got ready for the party. As the planner, he arrived at the venue earlier than Lucas. He checked that everything was in order and instructed the waiters to be careful around his boss. After making sure everything was correct and in order, he let out a sigh of relief.
Lucas arrived at the venue, looking so handsome that all the girls were drooling over him. Yes, he liked one girl the most, 'Petal.' He liked her, but he's not a saint. He was with other girls too—he used them and threw them away as if they were trash. Girls were attracted to him because of his looks and money, but he didn't give a damn about anything. If he wanted something, he got it by hook or by crook.
As he entered, girls threw themselves at him. He chose one girl from the entire group, and the rest were left on their own. That girl would be his partner for the evening, and even after the party too. He came inside, and James spotted him with the girl he chose. He welcomed both of them by handing over a bouquet of flowers. The media was also present, taking pictures of him and his partner and asking some questions. "You will get the answers to all your questions at this party," he said and made his way toward the dais.
"Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please? Thank you for attending this party on such short notice. The reason for this party is to celebrate winning an auction for a priceless piece of land. I have wanted to build a shopping mall from the start, and now I have the chance. I bought land near the airport in an auction by spending billions. I am sure that land will bring fortune to me. Enjoy the evening, guys," he said and raised a toast.
Everyone clapped after his speech. They started to congratulate him and offer him a toast. One of Lucas's family friends came to him and started talking with him after congratulating him. Lucas was so happy that he didn't mind talking with him—he was like an uncle to him. Lucas listened to him, and they chatted.
Then Mr. Charles cleared his throat and asked Lucas a question, "Are you sure you bought the land that will bring you fortune?" This led to a serious conversation.
"What do you mean, Uncle? I mean, what are you talking about?" Lucas questioned back.
"It's nothing. You know in the business field, you will hear some rumors here and there. I also heard some rumors recently," Mr. Charles replied to him.
"Uncle, don't worry. You know I snatched this land from the No.1 rival company," said Lucas. He thought it was just a trivial matter, but what he heard from Mr. Charles started to bother him.
"By the way, Uncle, what rumor are you talking about? Just, you know, out of curiosity," Lucas asked.
"Oh, I know, young man. You must be curious about everything. Not long ago, some companies were talking about the land located near the airport," Mr. Charles started. Lucas listened carefully, not wanting to miss any details.
"That land was located near the airport, so companies thought it would cost them their fortune. Still, they were ready to buy the land. They thought if they spent now, they would gain 10 times more in the future. That company went to the landowner and asked him about its price. They were shocked after hearing the price—it was very cheap, in the millions. That company went to the land to check the area and locality."
"They sent the soil to the lab for testing. They checked everything and were happy with its location, so they decided to buy the land—but not before the test results. They prepared the required documents. When the test results arrived, they were shocked to the core," Mr. Charles continued.
"The test results showed that the land is barren and useless. No one can build anything on it, and even if they did, it would collapse. It is useless. And to top it all off, the land was rejected by the airport after they tested everything. That company was so grateful to God—they thanked God for escaping the whole situation," Mr. Charles concluded.
After listening to Mr. Charles, Lucas had become sober by now. It was a shock to him to hear all of this. "Take it easy, young man. I hope you didn't make any mistakes," Mr. Charles said, patting Lucas on the shoulder before leaving. Lucas was also hoping the same—that he hadn't made any mistakes as his uncle had said. But then he thought, 'I didn't even check the location, I didn't even check if it was the same land, I didn't even bother to know anything just because I was blinded by the happiness of making Sebastian lose this auction. I didn't even put any effort into going through the whole file just because I wanted to celebrate my success,' he thought to himself.
Lucas fished his phone from his jacket nervously and dialed his assistant James's number. "Let's meet in the office right now," he said, and with that, he ended the call.
