It was past time for them to have reached even a halfway point in climbing and clambering around several mountainous peaks. Clarence made a point of staying above the usual limits of where mortals roamed. He knew they chose to remain within their lower bases and prevent loss of life when applicable. There had been too many indicators of explorers leaving behind careless tracks.
That made Clarence believe traps were set for the unwary explorer. He was not of mind to get caught either. Thanks to their fugitive status, Clarence avoided the typical areas he would've stopped at to get some supplies and more information about what was happening in the world.
His recollection of finding a better place to stay for a night reminded Clarence of other tasks he needed to accomplish before sunset, such as finding shelter for the night.
