Chapter 11 - Chapter:11

As Lufil wandered deeper into the forest, he mulled over his situation. The morning's misadventure had brought a stark realization: he was woefully unprepared for the challenges of this new world. While the forest presented dangers, it also offered a wealth of opportunities for growth and learning.

"System," he began, his tone contemplative, "I think I need to stay here in the forest for a while. Maybe two years or so. I need to get stronger before I can even think about surviving out there in the wider world."

The System responded, its tone supportive. "That sounds like a wise decision, Lufil. The forest will provide you with plenty of opportunities to hone your skills and grow stronger. But first, we need to address your basic needs: food, shelter, and clothing."

Lufil sighed, the enormity of the task ahead dawning on him. "Yeah, it's like playing real-life Minecraft. Except, you know, with real dangers and no respawns."

He scanned his surroundings, looking for a suitable place to set up camp. The forest was dense, with towering trees and thick underbrush. Birds chirped high above, and the air was filled with the earthy scent of leaves and moss. The occasional rustle of small animals added a sense of life to the tranquil setting.

"I guess the first thing I need is a place to live," Lufil said, feeling a mixture of determination and laziness. "Somewhere safe and comfortable, where I can sleep without worrying about getting eaten by something."

"Correct," the System replied. "Finding or creating a suitable shelter is paramount. You should look for a location that offers natural protection and resources. A cave or a sturdy tree could serve as a good starting point."

Lufil wandered for a while, examining various spots. He finally found a small clearing near a stream, with a large, sturdy tree at its center. The tree's roots formed a natural alcove that could provide some shelter, and the proximity to water was a significant advantage.

"This looks like a good spot," he said, setting his pack down. "Now, how do I go about making it more livable?"

"Start by gathering materials," the System advised. "You'll need branches, leaves, and perhaps some stones to create a more structured shelter. You can also use vines to tie things together."

Lufil got to work, albeit slowly. His lazy nature made him procrastinate, but he pushed through, gathering branches and large leaves to fashion a crude lean-to against the tree. It was far from perfect, but it would do for now.

As he worked, he couldn't help but grumble. "I really wish I had some tools. This would be so much easier with a proper axe or saw."

"Tools can be made," the System said. "But it will require effort and resourcefulness. For now, focus on getting the basics in place. Once you have a stable base, you can work on creating more advanced items."

After a few hours, Lufil stood back and surveyed his work. The shelter was modest, but it provided a bit of cover from the elements. He gathered some soft moss and leaves to create a makeshift bed, feeling a small sense of accomplishment.

"Not bad for a day's work," he admitted, stretching his tired muscles. "Next up, I need food. I can't survive on just one rabbit."

"Indeed," the System agreed. "You'll need to establish a steady source of food. Hunting and foraging will be essential skills to develop. The forest is rich with edible plants and animals, but you'll need to learn to identify them properly."

Lufil nodded, feeling a mixture of excitement and trepidation. "Alright, System. Let's do this. I'll become the best forager and hunter this forest has ever seen. But first, maybe a little nap wouldn't hurt."

The System chuckled softly. "Rest is important, Lufil. But remember, the more effort you put in now, the easier things will become in the future."

With that, Lufil lay down on his makeshift bed, staring up at the canopy above. The rustling leaves and distant calls of animals were strangely comforting. As he drifted off to sleep, he resolved to face each new day with a bit more determination, knowing that his journey was just beginning.

As Lufil slept, he dreamed of home. He saw familiar faces and the comforts of his old life. But the dream was cut short when the System's voice echoed urgently in his mind.

"Lufil, wake up!" The System's tone was sharp, filled with urgency.

Lufil groaned and tried to turn over. "Just five more minutes..."

"No, Lufil, you need to wake up now. You are surrounded by rabbits."

His eyes shot open immediately, adrenaline surging through his veins. He sat up quickly, looking around. Indeed, the clearing was filled with rabbits, all with glowing red eyes, their horns glinting menacingly in the moonlight. Each one stared at him with a predatory gaze.

Heart pounding, Lufil scrambled to his feet. "System, what the heck is going on? Are they here for revenge?"

"It seems so," the System responded calmly. "You did leave their kin in a rather disrespectful state."

Lufil's mind raced. "Okay, okay, think. Running... I could try, but I'm surrounded. Fighting? I mean, I beat one, but this many?"

The System chimed in. "You have no choice, Lufil. Fight or perish. This is your moment."

"Great, just great," Lufil muttered, frustration bubbling up. "Is this my beginning arc like some protagonist in an anime? Surrounded by demonic rabbits, of all things?"

The System remained unfazed. "Every hero has their trials, Lufil. Consider this yours. If you survive, you will grow stronger."

Lufil's hands clenched into fists. He glanced at the stats interface that popped up in front of him, showing his current abilities and the single point he had earned from his earlier kill. "One stat point... Where should I put it? Strength? Agility?"

"Agility," the System advised. "You need to be quick to avoid their attacks."

With a mental command, Lufil allocated the point to Agility, feeling a subtle boost in his speed and reflexes. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "Alright, let's do this."

The first rabbit lunged at him, its horn aimed directly at his chest. Lufil dodged to the side, barely avoiding the attack. He swung his fist at another rabbit, landing a solid hit on its side. The rabbit squealed and fell back, but others quickly took its place.

"They just keep coming!" Lufil panted, his movements growing more frantic.

"Focus, Lufil," the System urged. "You have the advantage of intelligence. Use it."

Lufil's mind raced as he remembered the herb he had used earlier for the rabbit meat. He spotted the plant nearby and had an idea. He grabbed a handful of the leaves and crushed them in his hand, smearing the juice on his skin. The bitter, pungent smell filled the air.

The rabbits hesitated, their sensitive noses twitching. Lufil saw his chance and launched a desperate attack, aiming for their eyes and throats. Each hit was a mix of desperation and determination.

Slowly, the tide turned. The rabbits, confused and disoriented by the smell, started to retreat. Lufil took deep breaths, his body aching from the exertion. His hands were scratched and bruised, but he was alive.

"System," he gasped, "I think I did it. I think I survived."

"Well done, Lufil," the System said, a note of pride in its voice. "You handled that well. This is your beginning arc, but remember, every step you take brings you closer to becoming stronger."

Lufil looked around at the retreating rabbits and the few that lay still on the ground. His body ached, and he felt a mix of exhaustion and triumph. "Yeah, my beginning arc... Let's just hope the next one isn't as intense."

He slumped down onto the ground, his mind racing with thoughts of what just happened. "This world is no joke. I need to be prepared for anything. But maybe... just maybe, I can handle it."

As he lay there, catching his breath, he couldn't help but chuckle. "Who knew my first real fight would be with a horde of demon rabbits? This world is crazy."

The System's voice was gentle now. "Rest, Lufil. You've earned it. Tomorrow is a new day, and there will be new challenges. But for now, you survived. That's what matters."

With a deep sigh, Lufil closed his eyes, letting the exhaustion take over. As he drifted off to sleep, he felt a sense of accomplishment. He had faced his fears and come out on top. It was a small victory, but it was his. And that was enough for now.
