Chereads / The Reincarnated MF / Chapter 11 - Leave Him Alone

Chapter 11 - Leave Him Alone

Shahzaib woke with a start, his heart pounding and his pajamas clinging to his sweat-drenched body. The dream had been so vivid - cloaked figures chasing him through the castle, their red eyes glowing in the darkness. And then there was Zara, reaching out to him, her fingers just brushing his before she was swallowed by the shadows.

"Bloody hell," he muttered, running a hand through his damp hair. "I need to lay off the late-night Pepper Imps."

As he stumbled out of bed, his roommate Aiden stirred. "You alright, mate? You look like you've been wrestling a Blast-Ended Skrewt."

Shahzaib managed a weak smile. "Just a nightmare. Go back to sleep."

Aiden yawned, his eyes already drooping. "If you say so. But if you start sprouting tentacles or something, I'm blaming it on those dodgy sweets from Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes."

As Aiden's snores filled the room once more, Shahzaib made his way to the bathroom. He splashed cold water on his face, trying to shake off the lingering unease from his dream. As he looked up at his reflection, he could have sworn he saw a flicker of movement behind him. He whirled around, but the bathroom was empty.

"Get a grip, Shahzaib," he muttered to himself. "You're jumping at shadows now."

But as he turned back to the mirror, he noticed something odd. His reflection seemed... off somehow. The eyes staring back at him were darker, more intense. And was that a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth?

Suddenly, his reflection spoke. "Well, well. Look who's finally starting to see clearly."

Shahzaib stumbled back, his heart racing. "What the... Who are you?"

The reflection chuckled, a sound that sent chills down Shahzaib's spine. "I'm you, of course. Or rather, the you that you could be if you stopped being such a scaredy-cat and embraced your true potential."

Shahzaib shook his head, trying to clear it. "This isn't real. I'm still dreaming."

"Oh, it's very real," the reflection said, its smirk widening. "And it's about time you woke up to the truth. You have power, Shahzaib. Power beyond your wildest dreams. But you're too busy mooning over that Ravenclaw girl and playing with your little sketchbook to see it."

At the mention of Zara, Shahzaib felt a surge of anger. "Leave her out of this!"

The reflection's eyes glinted dangerously. "Touched a nerve, have I? How adorable. But tell me, Shahzaib, do you really think she'd look twice at you if she knew what you were truly capable of?"

Before Shahzaib could respond, there was a loud knock at the bathroom door. "Oi, Shahzaib! Some of us have bladders the size of peanuts, you know. Hurry up in there!"

Shahzaib blinked, and his reflection was normal once more. He stared at the mirror for a moment longer, half-expecting his doppelganger to reappear, but there was nothing but his own pale, confused face looking back at him.

Shaken, he stumbled out of the bathroom, muttering an apology to his waiting roommate. As he got dressed for the day, he couldn't shake the feeling that something fundamental had shifted. The world seemed slightly off-kilter, as if he was viewing it through a distorted lens.

At breakfast in the Great Hall, Shahzaib picked at his food, his mind still reeling from the morning's events. He was so lost in thought that he didn't notice Zara approaching until she plopped down next to him, her knee brushing against his under the table.

"Earth to Shahzaib," she said, waving a hand in front of his face. "You look like you've been hit with a Confundus Charm. Everything okay?"

Shahzaib forced a smile. "Yeah, just... didn't sleep well."

Zara's eyes softened with concern. "Nightmares about last night?"

He nodded, not trusting himself to speak. Zara leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Listen, I've been doing some research. Those cloaked figures you saw? I think they might be part of an ancient secret society within Hogwarts. The Order of the Shadowed Veil."

Shahzaib's eyes widened. "The what now?"

"The Order of the Shadowed Veil," Zara repeated. "They're supposed to be guardians of some of the darkest magic in the wizarding world. But they were thought to have disbanded centuries ago."

"And now they're back? Why?"

Zara shrugged. "That's what we need to find out. But Shahzaib, if they're interested in you, it must be for a reason. We need to be careful."

As she spoke, Shahzaib couldn't help but notice the way the morning light caught her hair, making it shimmer like spun gold. Her eyes were bright with excitement and a hint of fear, and he found himself lost in their depths.

"Shahzaib? Are you even listening to me?"

He blinked, realizing he'd been staring. "Sorry, I was just... thinking."

Zara rolled her eyes, but there was a hint of a smile on her lips. "Well, think with your brain, not your... wand, if you know what I mean. We've got work to do."

Shahzaib felt his face heat up. "I wasn't... I mean, I didn't..."

Zara laughed, the sound sending a shiver down his spine. "Relax, I'm just teasing. Come on, we've got Potions first period, and I hear Professor Slughorn is in a particularly nasty mood today."

As they made their way to the dungeons, Shahzaib couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The shadows in the corners seemed to move of their own accord, and he could have sworn he heard whispers following them.

In Potions class, things went from bad to worse. As Shahzaib attempted to brew a Draught of Living Death, his cauldron began to bubble ominously. Before he could react, it exploded, covering him and half the class in a thick, purple goo.

"Mr. Shahzaib!" Professor Slughorn bellowed, his walrus mustache quivering with rage. "What in Merlin's name did you do?"

Shahzaib sputtered, wiping the goo from his eyes. "I don't know, sir. I followed the instructions exactly!"

Slughorn's eyes narrowed. "Detention, Mr. Shahzaib. And 20 points from Gryffindor for your carelessness."

As Shahzaib cleaned up the mess, he could hear his classmates whispering and giggling. "Nice one, Shahzaib," Aiden said, clapping him on the back. "I haven't seen an explosion like that since Seamus Finnigan's day. You trying to set a new record?"

Shahzaib groaned. "Very funny. I swear, it's like the potion had a mind of its own."

As he said it, a chill ran down his spine. Could it be connected to the strange events of the morning? Was someone - or something - messing with him?

After class, Zara pulled him aside. "Shahzaib, what's going on with you? First you're all distracted at breakfast, and now this? It's not like you to mess up a potion so badly."

Shahzaib hesitated, then decided to tell her about the incident in the bathroom. As he spoke, Zara's eyes grew wider and wider.

"Shahzaib," she said when he finished, her voice barely above a whisper, "this is serious. If your reflection was talking to you, it could be a sign of dark magic. We need to tell a professor."

But before Shahzaib could respond, a cold voice cut through the air. "I wouldn't do that if I were you, Miss Zara."

They whirled around to see a tall, cloaked figure standing in the shadows. Its face was hidden beneath a hood, but Shahzaib could feel its gaze boring into him.

"Who are you?" he demanded, his hand instinctively reaching for his wand.

The figure chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down Shahzaib's spine. "Who I am is not important. What matters is who you are, Shahzaib. Or rather, who you will become."

Zara stepped forward, her own wand drawn. "Leave him alone!"

The figure turned its attention to her, and Shahzaib felt a surge of protectiveness. "Ah, young love. How... quaint. But I'm afraid you're out of your depth, my dear. This is far beyond your comprehension."

With a flick of its wrist, the figure sent Zara flying backwards. She hit the wall with a sickening thud and crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

"Zara!" Shahzaib cried, rushing to her side. He turned to the cloaked figure, fury burning in his eyes. "You'll pay for that!"

The figure laughed again. "There it is. That fire, that power. Embrace it, Shahzaib. It's who you truly are."

As Shahzaib raised his wand, ready to unleash every spell he knew, the figure vanished in a swirl of shadows. The corridor was suddenly empty, save for Shahzaib and the unconscious Zara.

As he cradled her head in his lap, waiting for help to arrive, Shahzaib couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. Whatever game the cloaked figures were playing, he was right in the middle of it.

And as much as it terrified him, a small part of him - a part he didn't want to acknowledge - was thrilled by the prospect of the power they promised.

As Zara stirred in his arms, Shahzaib pushed those thoughts aside. For now, all that mattered was making sure she was okay. The rest... well, he'd deal with that when the time came.
