Chapter 42 - Chapter 42 | Gone

I wriggled around in my bed, from Priscilla attempting to get information that my family supposedly had, to Project Agnerona, to almost being killed by a Night Stalker, and to an assassin.

What did they do with the assassin afterwards, coincidentally I was able to hear maids talking about it, saying that it was taken care of. Although that didn't give me much to work with, it was most likely fine to leave it to the professionals.

creeek

A sound from the door, who was it? Besides the exception of a few, Claudia who went to sleep ages ago, Layla and Lione were working, and Priscilla helped Claudia to her room. All the butlers and maids should be at the dining area, I tiptoed to the side of the door, sticking close to the wall.

Ascending slowly above the doors with the use of my wind, I hovered waiting. There was no knocking or any other sounds any more, only until the doors creaked open slowly.

I could see their head peek through, it was the assassin again! A few seconds later and they walked through quietly, examining the corners of the room, she stood straight before walking further in and inspecting the bed's messy covers that I was once in. As she caressed the blanket, I generated a small sound bubble around me and dropped to the floor silently.

Did she escape? Recalling back, the maids said the problem was resolved, were they talking about some other issue? I doubted it, maybe all the maids were in on it. I couldn't trust anyone but my instructors, Dad and Claudia. But whom could I go to in the shortest time..

Dad and Hanise were probably dead-drunk by now, Claudia was asleep, and Layla was far from my room. But it was the only choice, the only way not to be pestered in the future I had to take care of her now.

This particular 'maid' was the most aggressive, and the other maids if not trusted, then taking out this one in particular would allow me to be free of danger for some time.

It took around 2 minutes, maybe 1 minute if I blasted myself with wind. It was fast enough, I was sure of it. I pointed my finger at her, the air pulled into the tip of my finger, it was best that I shot at full power, I'd have to catch them off-guard.

Her head spun toward my direction, astonishment pasted all over her face before the wind bullet blasted her into the wall. That should be enough time to-

She got up?! I sprinted down the hallway, the wind surrounded my body, accelerating my speed. Looking back, she was already on my tail, and throwing something sharp. I was getting closer to the end of the hall, just a bit more and I could push off and turn the corner-

Ack!

Some object stabbed me in the back? I fell hitting the wall in the process. It was faster than me? It wasn't faster, but somehow, a dagger was stuck in the bottom of the other dagger's handle.

I was baffled, she had the precision to accelerate the dagger's speed by hitting it directly with another? I could feel the blood trickle down my back, and my vision grew blurry, except for that fact, I could still see her figure approaching me at a dangerous rate.

Sh*t, it hurt like hell, fortunately it didn't hit my heart. I stood up, giving myself a running start once more I torpedoed down the corner solely through my wind. It took out a lot of my Aether but I was getting closer and she was once again getting further from me.

It was right there, Layla's laboratory. She was right there, and I'd be saved!

Agh!

Something else stabbed me!? It was the same trick, I tumbled forward, the daggers seeping deeper into my back. I couldn't stop, I was right in front of her room. Just a second later and I'd be inside, My hand clutched onto the door, swinging it wide open.

"Miss Layla! Argh..?" I yelled, my eyes darted around the laboratory. Layla.. Wasn't here.

Layla.

Wasn't.

Here.

Only two words repeated in my head as I felt the warm blood gradually crawl down to my waist. Then below my thigh, and then to the floor. At first these two words, I asked as if it was a question.

It was only after I repeated it so many times, that it sat on my tongue, waiting to be uttered from my lips. To confirm that I was truly gone.

The sounds of feet creepily crawling up from behind and the whistles of death drew near. I could hear it, a dagger waiting to reach its destination. In only a matter of seconds, and my life would extinguish, like a small fire blown out by the whistles of the wind.

In my mind, I wanted to reject that thought, and my mouth moved forcibly like it had a mind of its own.

"I'm dead." My body dropped to the floor, whether it was by the loss of blood, or because I felt like the extra few seconds that I had would be enough to find hope in such a precarious situation.

"Miss Ophelia?" I couldn't turn my head, but I could tell that it was Layla. My body lifted from the ground, and my body spun to face her.

"Wha.. About the m.." I was light-headed, and the words weren't coming out anymore.

"I've already taken care of them, they won't be bothering you any more." I could see Layla's mouth mutter something else but it was inaudible to me. "Is Hanise still partying?" She paused before remembering something, "Oh right, you're probably going to die soon, if only Hanise could magically teleport here and do his job.." She quipped.

My eyes were closing and I was losing consciousness fast. It was only a moment later that I could only see darkness.
