Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Fusionist

"He should be going back to look for Chen Muyu," said the rickshaw puller as the rickshaw moved forward on the rubble road. Chen Yifei sat in the rickshaw, his face extremely grave.

He didn't know which part of the plan had gone wrong, causing Han Meng to suspect him so quickly. Han Meng even went to the extent of paying out of his own pocket to send him away, just to interrogate Chen Muyu alone.

But the problem was, all his paths were now blocked.

Even if he went back to look for Chen Muyu, aside from the question of whether he could reach home faster than the enforcers, once he left the rickshaw, Han Meng would know about it soon, and then his suspicion would be hard to clear.

Next, it would depend on how Chen Muyu handled it...

However, Chen Yifei had already made a plan in his heart. Once his identity was exposed, he would escape directly from District 2. After all, Han Meng would need time to come from District 3.

As for Chen Muyu, he was an ordinary person and didn't know about Chen Yifei's identity as a Fusionist. He even didn't know what a Fusionist was... Even if something happened to Chen Yifei, he wouldn't be implicated.

"Brother, you said you didn't have money," said the rickshaw puller, panting as he pulled the rickshaw. "Even Enforcer Han Meng is reimbursing your travel expenses. Your identity is not simple."

"Hehe, indeed it's not simple," Chen Yifei replied.

The image of Han Meng appeared in Chen Yifei's mind, and he felt a malicious grievance blocking his chest. Then he asked, "How long will it take to get there?"

"It's fast, probably just ten more minutes," replied the puller.

"Don't go so fast. Run around this street for a few more circles," Chen Yifei said.

"...Huh?"

"Just run as I say. We'll charge him based on the kilometers run anyway," Chen Yifei sneered. "Doesn't he have a lot of money? I'll spend it for him..."

"So, should I really run then?"

"Run where there are more people, let them see you, so he can't deny it," Chen Yifei instructed.

"Alright!"

The puller then pulled Chen Yifei and ran around the busiest street in District 2 for more than ten circles. It was clear that the puller was also very excited. Just the extra distance he ran was enough for him to earn a few days' worth of fares.

When Chen Yifei got off the rickshaw, the corners of the puller's mouth were stretched to his ears, and he couldn't help but want to kowtow to this god of wealth on the spot.

Since he was the only one "forced to depart", Wu Youdong would arrive only after a few hours. Chen Yifei had to go to Bingquan Street alone to meet up with the enforcers from District 2 who were conducting inspections there.

Just as he walked to Bingquan Street, Chen Yifei's eyebrows furrowed.

The yellow warning line almost sealed off the entire street. There was still a residual scent of blood in the air. The low, broken buildings on both sides were empty, with no human figures. Only a few crimson bloodstains splashed on the white walls, which were shocking to see.

Chen Yifei bent down to cross the warning line. Under his feet were broken stones, as if a fierce wild animal had appeared here and slaughtered the entire street.

"What is this..." A look of confusion appeared in Chen Yifei's eyes.

In the ruins in the distance, several figures wearing black and red uniforms were moving around. They saw Chen Yifei entering the warning line and approached him directly.

"Are you the alternate from District 3? Why are you here so early?"

Chen Yifei handed over his transfer order and pushed the blame onto Han Meng, saying that he asked him to depart as soon as possible.

The enforcer nodded. "It's good that you're here early. We're short of manpower... My name is Qian Fan. I'm currently the enforcer responsible for Bingquan Street. You'll work with me for the next two days."

"Okay," Chen Yifei paused. "What happened here?"

"Haven't you heard?"

Qian Fan spoke with surprise, "The night before last... the day of the Grey Boundary convergence, a disaster beast ran into District Two and killed people along half a street."

Chen Yifei was taken aback, "The night before last?"

"Yes." Qian Fan nodded, "Didn't your District Three's law enforcement officer, Ma Zhong, tell you? This Grey Boundary convergence might have let out two disaster beasts... one at level five and one at level three.

The one that appeared in your District Three was level five, but it seemed to have low destructiveness and caused minimal casualties... Our level three beast in District Two, though not high-level, is really brutal..."

Upon hearing this, Chen Yifei's mind was spinning.

He had always thought that the disaster beast in his mind was the only one that had escaped from the Grey Boundary... but now there's another one?

"What about the level three beast? Was it caught?"

"If it was caught, why would we need so many people here?" Qian Fan sighed, "After killing people, that disaster beast disappeared... But some law enforcers witnessed its direction of departure; it should have headed towards the rear mountain."

The rear mountain...

Chen Yifei remembered that the rear mountain was located between District Two and District Three.

"These two disaster beasts are strange... Usually, after a disaster beast causes a commotion upon its arrival, it's quickly caught. On one hand, it's because of its large size, and on the other, it can't control its urge to continue killing... But coincidentally, these two disaster beasts disappeared simultaneously, just like they vanished into thin air!"

Chen Yifei's heart stirred, and he casually asked, "I heard there's a type of person called... a Fusionist?"

"Fusionist..." Qian Fan shook his head, "Do you think it's easy for a disaster beast to fuse with a human? To fuse with a disaster beast and survive, three conditions must be met... First, you must ensure that the disaster beast doesn't kill you. Just this one condition is enough to eliminate 99% of disaster beasts, as most of them lack self-control.

You might say that someone could weaken it to the brink of death first, which is possible, but the next issue is, you must ensure your physique is compatible with it... This is completely uncertain.

A human and a disaster beast are fundamentally different species. The probability of them being compatible is as slim as picking up a stone and finding that the natural patterns on it exactly form your name.

Even if you're lucky enough to meet the first two conditions, you must also ensure that after fusing with the disaster beast, you won't be driven to insanity by its will... According to what I know, most Fusionists are insane and don't survive for more than a few years."

Chen Yifei asked, "So, according to you, the probability of a Fusionist emerging is close to zero?"

"That's right." Qian Fan nodded, "But I heard that some in the Fusionist faction are researching ways to increase the success rate of fusion... I don't know how far they've progressed."

Initially, Chen Yifei thought he was a Fusionist, but after hearing Qian Fan's description, he felt it wasn't quite right...

His connection with the "audience" was entirely based on the theater, and there seemed to be no fusion process as he described... Although these "audience" did occasionally drive him to insanity.

At the same time, an idea flashed through Chen Yifei's mind.

Since he wasn't considered a Fusionist...

Was it possible that he could also grasp a path of his own... a path to divinity?
