The sun had long dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the dense forest clearing where Kelsier and Jake stood poised against the monstrosity before them.
Merci, the human turned troll changeling, towered over them. His thick, greenish skin stretched over bulging muscles, and his mismatched eyes—one human, the other troll—glowed with menacing fury. He gripped two tree trunks in his massive hands, each serving as crude yet devastating clubs. Every step he took shook the ground beneath their feet.
"It's smashing time." Merci bellowed a hearty laugh, while hitting the clubs in the ground.
"Go for the arms and heels," Kelsier shouted over the sound of Merci's growl. He darted forward, a blur of agility, sword flashing in the dim light. Jake followed closely behind, a pair of twin blades spinning in his hands like the fangs of a viper. They moved like shadows, fast and elusive, trying to strike at the weak points of the changeling.
Kelsier's sword cut through the air, aiming for the hybrid's exposed wrist, while Jake circled to the side, targeting the tendons behind Merci's heel.
Merci roared in frustration, his tree clubs sweeping in wild arcs, but the two warriors were always a step ahead, dodging and slipping past his brutal swings. Kelsier's blade scraped against the thick skin of Merci's forearm, leaving a shallow cut.
Jake, with more precision, managed to land a glancing blow on the back of Merci's ankle, forcing the beast to stagger briefly.
For a moment, it seemed they might have the upper hand.
Merci's movements grew more erratic as he lashed out with his clubs, his fury only increasing with each injury he sustained. He swung both clubs at Jake, who flipped backward with a graceful roll just in time, the massive wooden trunk crashing into the earth where he had stood a split second earlier. Meanwhile, Kelsier nimbly dodged a counterstrike, his sword dancing dangerously close to Merci's ribs.
"Keep moving!" Jake shouted as he ducked another wild swing.
The wind from the club's passage tugged at his hair, but he paid it no mind, his focus solely on the monster's weak points. He rolled and came up on his feet in one fluid motion, launching another rapid strike at Merci's heels. But the changeling was cunning. He feigned a stumble, allowing Jake's strike to land, but instead of faltering, Merci twisted his entire body with alarming speed.
In a blur of motion, one of the clubs came hurtling toward Kelsier. He barely managed to parry with his sword, but the sheer force of the impact sent him skidding backward, his boots digging into the soft earth.
"Careful," Kelsier warned, his breath labored as he tried to recover his balance. Merci was faster than they had anticipated—far faster for something so massive.
Jake, too, was beginning to tire. His chest heaved as he leaped to avoid another swing. He has fought several bandits a while ago and it's only his will that is keeping him up.
The fight was dragging on, and though they had dealt several blows to Merci's arms and legs, the beast seemed relentless, driven by some primal rage. The two agile warriors circled around the changeling troll, trying to wear him down, waiting for an opening to end the fight. Yet, every time they struck him, Merci retaliated with brutal force, hitting their swords, trying to break them. If this continues, they would tire down or their weapons will break. This needs to end quickly.
Merci pulled back his lips in a grotesque grin, baring yellowed teeth. He feinted an attack, one tree club swinging low towards Kelsier's legs while the other swung high at Jake's torso. Both warriors saw the trap and responded with perfect synchronization—Kelsier jumped while Jake rolled beneath the high swing. They evaded narrowly once again, but they don't know how if they can last much longer.
"Merci!" Jake growled. His eyes gleamed with determination. "I am sorry but I would have to kill you to end this fight!"
"Ha!" Merci laughed. "You can try, but you won't be able to kill me even if both you aimed for my heart."
He hit his left chest, the sound of metal can be heard. He has embedded metal sheets under his skin.
"By the way, I also have metal sheet embedded underneath my skin at the back hahaha! "
"The perks of being a troll with fast healing." Merci laughed.
"I would have to split your head open or decapitate you then." Jake said.
Merci frowned. He didn't think about that.
"Why would you announce your strategy you dope!" Merci laughed again. "I just have to protect my head and neck and you two would be finished."
"Eh?" Merci said, his body shaky.
Merci's knees buckled suddenly, and the giant knees fell to the ground with a thud.
He dropped his clubs as though in defeat, his massive body slumping forward. Kelsier and Jake exchanged a brief glance. Is this it? Had the paralyzing toxins finally worn him down?
Kelsier and Jake has laced his blades with paralyzing toxins, it might have taken effect.
Jake was the first to act. He sprinted forward, his body a blur of motion. Kelsier followed, positioning himself behind Merci, locking his arms around the creature's neck in a chokehold as he squeezed with all his might. The plan was swift, precise, and deadly.
Jake then jumped and did a flying kick towards Merci's face but Merci wasn't as beaten as he appeared.
Just as Jake was about to his Merci, his foot only inches from his face, the changeling moved with startling speed, his hands shot up, catching Jake by the his extended right leg in mid-flight. A sickening crack echoed through the clearing as Merci crushed Jake's right leg with bone-breaking force.
"Aaargggh!" Jake howled in pain.
Kelsier's eyes widened in horror as he saw what happened but it was too late. Merci has tricked them both.
The changeling let out a victorious roar, reverberating around the forest, He threw Jake to the side like a ragdoll. Jake screamed in pain.
The battle has now shifted in Merci's favor.
