Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Deliberation

Isabella left the cafe, her mind reeling with Ethan's proposal. She needed a place to clear her head, somewhere familiar and comforting. She headed to Willow Creek Children's Park, a tranquil oasis from her chaotic thoughts. This was her sanctuary, where she'd often retreated as a child to ponder life's complexities. Isabella settled onto a worn wooden swing, gently swaying back and forth. The rhythmic creaking soothed her, allowing her to focus.

Ethan's words echoed in her mind: a six-month marriage, a contract, no emotions involved. Her family's pressure to marry weighed heavily on her. Her grandmother, in particular, was desperate to see her settled. Isabella's thoughts turned to her own life. No potential suitors came to mind. Ethan, despite his disability, seemed like the most viable option. His wealth and social standing were undeniable. "As long as it's not about love," she thought, "and we'll part ways in six months... maybe this isn't so bad."

Lost in contemplation, Isabella didn't notice her best friend, Sophia, approaching until she heard: "Hey, Bella! What brings you here?" Sophia asked, settling beside her on the swing. Isabella smiled weakly. "Just needed some fresh air." Sophia's eyes narrowed. "Or a refuge from your family's matchmaking?" Isabella's gaze drifted back to the ground. "Something like that."

Sophia's expression turned serious. "What's going on? You can tell me." Isabella hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But Sophia's concerned expression put her at ease. "Ethan Kim proposed a contract marriage," Isabella said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Sophia's eyes widened. "The Ethan Kim? What did you say?"

Isabella shrugged. "I need time to think." Sophia nodded. "Let's think together, then." And with that, Isabella began to confide in Sophia, sharing every detail of her encounter with Ethan.

Sophia listened attentively, her expression a mix of concern and understanding.

"I think I have no choice but to agree with Ethan," Isabella said, resignation creeping into her voice. "I'll go into this marriage for six months, and then we'll divorce. After that, I'll figure out my life – maybe return to my old job, or start something new."

Sophia nodded thoughtfully. "It's a practical solution, Bella. But are you sure you're ready for this? Marriage, even a fake one, comes with complications."

Isabella sighed. "I know, but what other options do I have? My family won't leave me alone, and Ethan's proposal... it's a way out. A temporary solution."

Sophia placed a reassuring hand on Isabella's shoulder. "You're strong, Bella. You'll get through this. But promise me one thing."

"What's that?" Isabella asked.

"Keep your heart guarded. Don't let Ethan get too close, even if it's just a contract. You deserve better than a loveless marriage."

Isabella smiled wryly. "Don't worry, Soph. My heart's already locked away. This is just business."

Sophia's eyes sparkled with determination. "I'll be here for you, every step of the way."

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over Willow Creek Park, Isabella felt a sense of resolve wash over her. She would do this, for her family, for herself.

The next step was clear: she would contact Ethan, accept his proposal, and begin the charade.
