Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: Flattened

"Rat-tat-tat… clack clack…!"

As the machine gun emptied its belt, not a single living creature remained standing in front of the muscular D-class subject. Both the "Doberman Pinschers" and the besieged D-class subjects lay on the ground, torn apart and lifeless.

"F*ck yeah! That felt so damn good!"

For the muscle-bound man, killing his fellow inmates didn't bring any guilt. In fact, it allowed him to vent the negative emotions he had accumulated during his imprisonment, leaving him with a look of pleasure and satisfaction.

The other D-class subjects who had arrived on the street didn't show any sympathy or sadness either. After all, their hands had been stained with blood long before they were caught and thrown into prison.

What did surprise them, however, was that the "Dobermans," despite being blown in half by the machine gun's bullets, were still twitching, their mouths opening and closing as they tried to continue their attack. They seemed impervious to pain or death.

The D-class subjects moved closer to observe and noticed that the dogs' eyes were covered with a layer of blood-red film. Their fangs were sharp, and their muscles were powerful, but apart from these differences, they looked just like slightly larger Doberman Pinschers.

"Ugh… ugh…"

At that moment, the corpse of a D-class subject who had lost an arm and half a shoulder to a .30cal bullet suddenly let out a hollow wail and struggled to turn over.

Soon, it wasn't just that one corpse—every dead body with an intact head started to wobble and "come back to life."

Thud, thud!

But the muscle-bound man, who had already reloaded his machine gun, didn't care about these reanimated corpses. He quickly ran up to the nearest one, raised his right leg, and then swung it back before delivering a powerful kick to the back of the corpse's head.

Boom! Crack!

With a dull thud and the sickening sound of bones breaking, the corpse that was about to "revive" had its neck snapped and was completely silenced.

"Spit!"

The muscle-bound man spat on the now fully dead corpse, cursing, "F*ck off! Don't try to scare me. Don't you know I've watched horror movies before? I know what zombies are, damn it!"

"Hah!" Another D-class subject laughed and added, "Is Atlas seriously underestimating us, sending some mutant dogs to test us?"

"Correction: they're using us to test the mutant dogs. But I didn't expect them to be so weak!"

"Hahaha! There's nothing more satisfying than watching Atlas screw up!"

Laughter echoed down the street. Judging by the confident expressions of these D-class subjects, they seemed certain they would easily earn their promised dessert and afternoon tea.

Thump, thump!

However, the laughter didn't last long before it was interrupted by a rhythmic, thumping sound that could be felt through the ground.

?!

The D-class subjects, now alerted by the loud noise, quickly sought cover, choosing what they believed were the best hiding spots, such as abandoned vehicles or stores they could enter. They all pointed their guns in the direction of the thumping sound.

They waited for several seconds, but the thumping suddenly ceased, and the street fell into an eerie silence.

Tap… tap…

Help!

Aaargh!

The gunfire, cries for help, and screams of pain coming from other streets suddenly became more distinct.

"Hey!" One of the D-class subjects, perhaps trying to boost his own courage, shouted to the others from inside a store, "What do you see out there?"

"False alarm! There's nothing here!"

The muscle-bound man, who had his machine gun propped on the hood of an abandoned car, remained unconcerned.

"Phew…"

Relieved to see the man outside unfazed, the subject inside the store began to convince himself that the fear he felt earlier was just a figment of his imagination... right?

BOOM!!

Suddenly, a loud, violent noise came from behind him, like a building being demolished, causing the already tense D-class subject to stumble and fall to the ground.

Without wasting a moment, he frantically crawled toward his CARB rifle, which had fallen nearby. To him, nothing could offer more reassurance than that gun.

But before he could crawl far, a massive hand completely engulfed his head, and then…

SPLAT!

The sound of something bursting filled the store.

Outside the store:

?!

"You f*cker! Trying to ambush us?" The muscle-bound man was the first to react, shouting as he swung his gun around and squeezed the trigger.

Rat-tat-tat!!

Gunfire erupted.

"Die!"

"Hahaha!"

None of the D-class subjects considered the possible drawbacks of this concentrated attack; they were only focused on quickly eliminating the "creature" that had spooked them.

Soon, all the D-class subjects standing on the street had emptied their magazines or ammunition belts.

They turned their attention back to the store, where the shelves were twisted and shattered, merchandise models were reduced to bits, and everything was in complete disarray. The flickering emergency lights sputtered with sparks, casting an even more chaotic and broken scene.

"Yeah!"

"Awesome!!"

The D-class subjects cheered for their "work," but none of them realized that their most urgent task was to reload their weapons, leaving them without anyone to provide covering fire.

Before they even knew it, the "person" they had been firing at had been waiting for just this moment.

BOOM!!

With another round of violent "demolition," a "giant" burst through the store, sweeping through the street like a storm.

!

This time, the D-class subjects finally saw the creature that had been "playing tricks" on them.

It was a giant, standing nearly 4.2 to 4.3 meters tall, wearing a leather "black trench coat" and with grayish skin.

The giant didn't give them any time to react. It sprinted up to the muscle-bound man and swung its right fist.

BAM!

The man's body was completely crushed by the giant's punch, his blood, flesh, and bones splattering in all directions.

SPLAT!

One of the D-class subjects closest to the "crime scene" instinctively blinked as a few drops of blood spattered onto his cheek. His expression quickly shifted from stunned to utterly terrified, and his whole body began to tremble uncontrollably.

When the giant turned around and stared down at him with its reddish, pupil-less eyes...

"Aaah… don't kill me! Aaah!!"

The D-class subject's mind broke entirely. He tried to flee, but the giant's left hand swung out, its backhand slamming into his face.

BAM!

As his head exploded, the man's limp body was sent flying several meters, finally crashing into a wall and bursting into a mist of blood.

"What… what is that thing?!"

"Kill it! Kill it!"

"Help! Help! No... aah!"

Witnessing such brutal and bloody carnage, these D-class subjects—scum and thugs by nature—were now experiencing for the first time the same sense of despair, helplessness, and terror that their victims had felt when they had been ruthlessly slaughtered.

But the giant didn't pause its attack for a second.
